The orange notebook! The search for the box of 18 crayons!
I remember those days and don’t miss them one bit. I can remember the hunt for the elusive orange folder that neither Staples, Office Depot, Target, Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, the teacher supply store or the school store carries. We were asking friends who were out of state on vacation to look for them. Then that teacher remarked in passing one day that she was so surprised to see that none of her kids had notebooks with their favorite characters/puppies/kitties/horses on them. So I told her the story about the orange folder and how her list specified one blue, green, yellow, and red notebook. Evidently the head teacher had put in the supply list and just went off of what could be ordered by the school from their vendor.

My only complaint is that my kids are in High School and get the list of things they need on the first day of school. Which is after all the sales and everything is picked over. I have no intention of buying stuff in case they need it. I am no longer ok being a school supply hoarder. I bought a couple of boxes of pencils yesterday. I make no promises I will be able to provide exactly what the teachers want after that.

Nope. I told my kids they had to find what they could in the graveyard of their unused supplies from years past. If the folder is the wrong color, they can paint it.
(I am going to Amazon Prime a case of Kleenex and one of hand sanitizer up to the high school. Those poor teachers don’t get anything for their rooms. Another friend sends Expo markers.)

Should I have to give my child's teacher a box of tissues? Effing ridiculous! I'm going to send my child with one of those plastic purse sized packages of tissues and she can keep it in her desk.
(ETA - I am being sarcastic. This is just one of my favorite responses to tissues being on the supply list. I actually had a parent send in a personal purse pack for her daughter one year to keep in her own desk.)

I bought my kid up and up brand washable markers for 65 cents instead of the crayola washable for $3. Flame on! 🤣
She is at my site. They have community supplies. I will get more when the need is there.

The big fight here right now is spiral vs composition notebooks. Some of the teachers want composition because they feel they hold up better. But they are also more expensive and I personally prefer spiral.

(Actually, I don't like markers in general except for crafts)

We do similar—find out the needs and send boxes of products over.

I am having my daughter write her name on every single crayon in her box of 5,326. I am not here to supply other people's kids with school supplies.
(My daughter is actually in high school and she is still recycling her binders from freshman year and has an eraser from elementary school. But I used to teach and have heard my share of complaints about The List.)
ETA - also sarcastic.

...but isn't it about time to have a fight about school supplies? I think it is an indication of how the general population of the board is ageing. When I started I had kids in middle school. Now they have kids in middle school! School supplies aren't on my radar.

Our list wasn’t bad. We search the graveyard first and fill in anything missing.
I would like to complain about summer work though.

Say it with me, people: Ti-con-de-ro-ga. Most other pencils, especially those bargain packs or, worse yet, the ones wrapped in plastic designs, make life miserable.

I don't miss any of that shit show of buying the crap on the list and having 3/4 of it return home unopened or unused!!
After about the 3rd yr of that happening I quit buying what was on the list and sent them to school with a few binders, scribbles and recycled the pens, pencils, crayons and markers.
Such a time and money sucker and I remember my kids getting teary eyed because God forbid they didnt have the required pencils.
I hated when my kids had to go back to school and the lunches, volunteering, fighting with them to get up, do homework. I hated dealing with teachers who were lazy or teachers who didn't want Spencer in their classroom because he didnt fit their cookie cutter idea because he had a disability and learning difficulties. Yeah they aren't all like that but our small town school seemed to have more than their fair share!
When I go to walmart or staples in August I grin like a crazy person because I don't have to deal with any of that frustration or the whiny kids or the crowded aisles or the bitchy moms LOL.
