we only pay for Netflix for streaming, my son did have Prime but not anymore,I rarely used it thought. I also watch a lot off of Youtube(we stream through a PS4 if that matters).. We did buy an antenna and have it mounted on a pole outside above the house and it picks up 50 channels give or take a couple..not sure if the link will work but I'll stick a link below to the antenna we got.. We live right between Knoxville and Chattanooga in the country, but mostly pick up Chattanooga stations for locals. link

we don't get the local channels. We dropped Dish 10 yrs ago - we tried an antenna but we're too rural and nothing comes in. Honestly no one here misses them - my mum complained when she visited (but she no longer visits due to age) and my late MIL missed them when she lived with us - but the rest of us get news online and it's been so long since we've had TV other than Netflix and Amazon Prime that no one is hooked on any network shows.

Yeah what antenna do you have and where is it? I'm seriously rural. Like no where. And I can get channels. What are channels are you not getting that you want? It’s not just about distance. Lots of things factor in. I live in a stucco house. The wire mesh they use in construction of it heavily interferes with the OTA signal into the house. Also I live in a heavily treed neighborhood which has an affect also. I only live 15 miles from the towers, and our reception varies from very good to non existent. I use DirectTV now, soon to be AT&T TV Now. I am grandfathered into a great plan, but the new ones aren’t as good value, IMO. I think interference is the problem. I live in a duplex so it's not just my walls the signals have to go through but also my attached neighbors. And there are tall trees behind my house. I bought this antenna as a deal on Prime Day. I've been trying it in front of the window in my bedroom which is in the back of the house on the 2nd floor. I did try taping it to the top of the window and that's when I got the most channels. I actually picked up an ABC station from pretty far away but it was a weak signal. Today I tried it in another window in the front of my house on the 2nd floor. This time I could get a CBS station but no NBC or ABC. I then tried it various places on the first floor because I could get it closer to the corner of the house. That was worse. So I'll get some Command strips and place it at the top of the window in the bedroom so I can get NBC and maybe ABC and a weak PBS and CW. I didn't expect this much work to try to get local channels!

We originally went with Sling and subscribed to CBS All Access, along with the Prime and Netflix we already had. It was . . . okay. CBS All access was VERY glitchy. Lots of freezing and refusing to finish a program. We’ve switched to PlayStation Vue and get all our local stations streaming. Still not perfect, but much better than Sling and my non-HD via internet provider that I had before. We had Sling for a while too and it was just meh. Seemed like at the top and bottom of the hour it would buffer and took a while to get back up. Hulu Live is much better in that respect. Is your internet speed fast enough? I knew if I wanted to stream I would need to bump up the speed to another level. Fortunately, Windstream was offering free upgrades. I got all of my equipment from Amazon before Windstream was able to come out to do the upgrade so I tried it with the old speed, which they told me was a very slow speed. I didn't have Sling at that point yet, but I had been using Amazon Prime to watch things for several years but had the buffering issues you mentioned. Once my internet speed was upgraded I noticed a HUGE difference in everything. Even the app updates for my iPhone are so fast now. And I haven't had any buffering problems at all with Sling or Prime since having the faster internet.

It was probably 3 years ago so things may have changed (gotten better!) since then.

We have HuluLive and add on the Enhanced Cloud DVR package which gives us 200 hrs of storage. By itself, that option is $9.99/mo. But we also have the Multiple Screens option, so the bundle price for those together is $14.99/mo. Sling has 50 hrs of storage for $5/mo, while DirectvNow has 20 hrs of storage.

can you watch live sports, and is there DVR service? Yes and yes. See my answer just above about the DVR service. We are able to get all the live sports we are interested in, but I can't vouch for anything outside of major league baseball and college sports. DH tried out the MLB app this summer and found that it blacked out more games than our HuluLive channels did. There were multiple time that the app blocked the Astros games (we are in Houston), and he could watch them on HuluLive. Needless to say, the app was cancelled.

So for those what have live TV with out cable. Is there a way to record it for later? We use our dvr for everything, never watch things live. I got the DVR service with Sling. For the local channels that I can get with the antenna, I got the Fire TV Recast deal on Prime Day. It works great for the channels that I can get. I allows me to cast the antenna channels to any TVs that have a Fire stick and I can also watch using the Fire TV app on my phone and Kindle Fire. It also acts as a DVR for the antenna channels.
