I was following a discussion this morning around the idea we are reaching a critical point in the US where everyone knows someone who has been involved in a mass shooting event. We have a couple friends that were at the Route 91 Harvest shooting in Las Vegas and are active in a San Diego survivors group. I have another friend whose DD and DSIL were there. Her firefighter DSIL pinned down his wife and took two bullets in one leg and a third in his arm. Do you know someone? Why is there not a "No" option? Wouldn't that make sense to see a relative idea of those that have vs those that haven't? Especially given the initial statement saying "everyone knows someone who has been involved in a mass shooting event. " That's my question also. Without a NO option, the poll paints a lopsided picture.

Without a NO option, the poll paints a lopsided picture. I was interested in the question I asked in the thread title I guess. How is the picture lopsided? Clearly not everyone here has been personally touched by a mass shooting, when only 57 voters have responded. I allowed for multiple answers because I was more interested in those 3 categories and knew some people would respond to more than one. A "no" option wouldn't have given me the 57 and is unnecessary IMHO.

I answered yes, but now I'm not sure. There were "only" 4 people killed that day (besides the shooter) at 3 different locations in town; and it wasn't really random. He was targeting his wife and when he couldn't get to her, he killed two of her coworkers, her lawyer and a police officer. His wife (and her coworkers) were tellers at our bank. My husband has cleaned there for years and I sometimes help him - about 6 months after it happened, they released security footage and because I was so familiar with the setup of the bank, it was almost like being there. On the anniversary every year, they make mention of it on the local news and I need to avoid the coverage. And it bothers me that it bothers me so much.

I don’t know anyone who was killed in a mass shooting but I did know a police officer that was killed on 9/11 in the Twin Towers.

I was stationed at fort hood when the shooting happened in 2009. Will never forget that day, I was 27 weeks pregnant locked in our company on and went into preterm labor. I could not be released due to the shooter was active on base. I was hospitalized as soon as he was caught and she was born 18 days later.

A family who lost a son at Sandy Hook.
A dear friend from University worked at the Pentagon on 9/11. The plane hit his offices. However, his offices were being remodeled on 9/11 and his area had moved to another area in the complex. Had they all been in their regular offices, the death toll would have been much higher. Fortunately he was just fine.

I know two people, a mother and son who were shot in their legs while running in Vegas. She has PTSD now and got hooked on pain killers. Her doctor recommended a pain patch recently but she refused since going cold turkey on the pills.

I know a few of the Sandy Hook families and worked with one of the teachers who was killed mother. Friends with quite a few of the first responders there. I can only imagine this as the absolute worst scene imaginable to be a first responder. The absolute worst.

A girl in our church as at the Thousand Oaks shooting near Pepperdine. She escaped out a window but her best friend and roommate, the niece of actress Tamera Mowry (of Tia & Tamera, Sister Sister), was killed.
I didn’t know anyone personally but I have many friends who knew the people killed at Emmanuel AME church in Charleston.
