I was following a discussion this morning around the idea we are reaching a critical point in the US where everyone knows someone who has been involved in a mass shooting event.
We have a couple friends that were at the Route 91 Harvest shooting in Las Vegas and are active in a San Diego survivors group. I have another friend whose DD and DSIL were there. Her firefighter DSIL pinned down his wife and took two bullets in one leg and a third in his arm.
Do you know someone?

No, I don't know anyone who has been in a mass shooting event.
Hugs to everyone that has or that knows someone!

No.
I had a step uncle who was a first responder to the plane crash to the pentagon on 9/11. As far as I know he did not suffer any mental trauma due to the event, nor was he injured in any physical way.

I know several people who were witness to the synagogue shooting that happened recently in Poway. I didn’t know the woman who was killed.

Yes.
A friend was maimed and her young daughter was murdered in a large, mass shooting a few years ago. It’s too painful to talk about, even now.

No, I don't know anybody, but the terror has seeped into my consciousness. The Thousand Oaks shooting was only 25 miles from me. I have always wanted to go to the Gilroy Garlic Festival. My kids'schools have been on lockdown multiple times. When we drive into Arizona and I seen goofy looking guys with pistols in holders I am afraid.
I am not fearful by nature, but I am risk averse. I don't want my children to be casualties of the second amendment. I know the odds are against, but now I am afraid.

Student’s parent survived Columbine. The high principal at a neighboring school was shot and killed when I student taught.

Sadly, I do know two people who were killed in a mass shooting in 2016.
Just yesterday, I attended a fundraising event for their memorial scholarship fund.

I don't personally know anyone who was killed or injured in a mass shooting, but I live about 20 minutes from Killeen where the Luby's massacre was. I have friends and family who lost people in that one. It's been 27 years since that one. You never forget.

Two of my college roommates were at the Route 91 Harvest shooting in Las Vegas. They thankfully escaped without any physical harm, but I know they have both struggled since.
One of my best friend's uncles was on the plane that went down in the field in PA on 9/11.

There was a school shooting several years ago in a town close by. I have recently talked to a few people who were in high school there at the time. But other than that I have not really heard people talking about it here, even with increased shootings.

My area has a large number of Somali refugees. I have been more worried lately that the hate towards them would be damaging emotionally as well as physically (especially after Trump's statements last week). But now I am also more worried that our community as a whole may be at risk of an attack such as the one in El Paso--also based on that rhetoric and increased white nationalism.

Personally know: I know of a few people that were contract workers for my company, working at the Gilroy Garlic Festival. They have worked events for me in the past. They aren't close to me, but I know them. None were injured.
Acquaintances: - A woman I've followed on IG for a long time (because of WW) - her college-age daughter was line dancing at The Borderline Bar in Thousand Oaks, but was not physically injured. Our west coast office is in Thousand Oaks and several coworkers go there, but were not there that night. - I know a few people in the music industry through work that were at the Route 91 festival in Vegas. None were physically injured - most were backstage.

Not directly. I know someone who's parents were injured in the LV shooting. I know a few people who knew one of the police officers killed in Dallas in 2016.

My cousin's son was a student at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, CO and witnessed the shooting there in December 2013. He was not injured, though.

There was a mass shooting in my home town in 2010. I knew of several of the victims but there was one lady who I spoke to regularly who sadly died. It was a very sad time for the area. One of the victims was killed on my street whilst I was walking my dog. I heard the gun shot.

No, thank goodness.
This wasn't a shooting, but I was there when the bomb when off during the 1996 Olympics. I had been sitting in the exact spot where it went off only 1 hour before, we had only moved because the friend I was with wanted to go get something to eat.

Wouldn't that make sense to see a relative idea of those that have vs those that haven't? Especially given the initial statement saying "everyone knows someone who has been involved in a mass shooting event. " In my mind (which is only as useful as it is to me) I don't consider shootings, even with multiple victims, that occur during commission of a crime, a specific murder or homicide/suicides "mass shootings." The twisted intent is different. Loose definitions of the problem are part of the problem. That said, yes, I do know someone who committed 3 murders and 3 attempted in one day. It included both the element of random and people he knew. Multiple locations over the course of a day. I know quite a few people who have been shot, both first hand and by a degree or two of separation. Just in July alone I know a woman whose 8 year old son was stabbed to death, a new friend who was stabbed to death (had dinner with her minutes before her stabbing) and a young man that was friends with my nephew shot and killed.

I didn't vote. I worked with a guy who was at the Las Vegas one at the concert, but I didn't know him, only by someone saying "John was at that concert" and someone pointed him out to me.
I don't know anyone at this point. Other than that guy, I had another work friend who had friends in the Twin Towers that died. They were employees together years before that.
I did live very close to Columbine and my BIL went to school there (before the attack).. My inlaws are friends with parents of one of the students that got shot, Kyle Velasquez.
Hugs to those who have lost someone!

My cousin’s nephew was involved in 9/11. He passed away from the shock of it a couple of years later. He was late for work, but witness the tower he worked in get destroyed.

My cousin was a senior at Columbine when that shooting happened. Her class barricaded themselves in their room. The shooters did not come down their hallway, they were very lucky.
