That’s horrific. It’s so so hard not to lose oneself to utter despair these days.

The makers of the hats admitted that they wanted them to look like MAGA hats.
Utter despair is right.

How do we live in a world where more than one person thinks this is a good idea? Just HOW?

I hear you Elaine. My antidepressant doesn’t seem to be up to the task of helping me deal with the crap that’s been happening the last couple of years. I’ve gone from hoping “things will get better soon” and “he can’t do that much damage” to feeling that it’s not too far off that we won’t even be able to put the brakes on the downward spiral we’re stuck in.

I saw that too. I can't imagine. I cannot wrap my head around the hate. I mean I see the lack of empathy and the blame around here, but it isn't to the level of hate. How do you hate a group of people?

That's horrific.
I thought Germany has laws against spewing antisemitic propaganda. I didn't think they'd have a neo Nazi convention.

The Daily had a podcast series recently where they discussed politics in Europe right now. They went to three countries--Germany, Italy and I can't remember the third. It was depressing that other countries are dealing with similar things that we are here. When asked about hate speech and racism in their country, given their history, a young German man said something to the effect of, "That wasn't me or my time. I shouldn't have to be judged based on those people." I didn't get the sense that he had learned anything from the history of their country. It was shocking to hear, given that WWII wasn't that long ago.

A glimmer of hope - I met a refugee family from Iraq in a camp on Lesvos in 2016. They arrived in Germany soon after and have lived in a camp since then. They were finally granted asylum last month. They say they have received nothing but kindness and generosity from the German people for the last 3 years. They are a large family with many skills and they’ve already learnt German. They will be an asset to the country.
