This just came on the national news in Norway.
It may be media bias, but your country does NOT have a favorable reputation in other countries right now. The stories coming out of the US just this week makes it seem like it's the wild west out there right now.
I hope people are fired over this. I'm sure this does not represent the majority of LEOs in the US, but that picture just evokes so many emotions about an era I hoped was gone.

Just when you thought you’d reached the bottom this happens. I was just visiting the US and the only place I truly felt safe was at Uwajimaya. (Japanese grocery store). Anything I could possibly say would just incite more people.

And it's coming out in local media that the guy is a mentally ill homeless man who is well-known to the police in the area and has a record for things like trespassing and nuisance behavior. I mean come on... He's not a murderer. How hard is it to just wait for a car to come get him? Or have one officer walk next to him while the other officer leads both horses behind them? Too many people online excusing it and saying the police acted appropriately, which is bullshit. But the guy's extended family on the mainland are raising holy hell and demanding action. So the situation isn't likely to just go away.

Ok, let me say I don’t think this is ok in any way, shape, or form. It’s not. It’s not ok. It should not have happened.
But
Why is everyone only talking about the officers? Why are we not talking about the fact that this is an approved, official action in the police department procedures (I mean, why do you think they had a rope with them on the horse?)? Doesn’t that seem like the bigger, more important issue? It’s not these two officers, it’s the whole system. And the system isn’t going to be improved at all by blaming/scapegoating these two officers who were in fact following procedure (and let me say again - it’s not ok). Doesn’t the fact that this is a procedure in the first place seem worse than these two officers following it?

I’ve read that the police immediately changed their policy. It’s shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted though. The bigger question is who in their right mind thought this was an acceptable procedure in the first place, even for crowd control. |
