linkCBS News... ” Motorcycle backfire stirs panic in NYC's Times Square as crowd mistakes sound for gunshot”“New York — The sound of a motorcycle backfiring sparked widespread panic in Times Square late Tuesday after crowds mistook the noise for gunfire. In the wake of recent mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, chaos quickly ensued as people raced to escape what they thought could be an active shooter carrying out an attack. Some on social media claimed that some people screamed "shooter," sending more people stampeding in fear. Many people reported hearing the bangs, but didn't react until the crowds started screaming and running. Others didn't know what was going on and simply followed suit, confused and scared. Witnesses called it a stampede as people ran away from the area down nearby streets into restaurants, stores and even theaters. Several pedestrians were hurt in the panicked rush. NYPD officials told CBS New York some 22 people were injured, four of whom were sent to a nearby hospital. Gideon Glick, who plays Dill Harris in "To Kill a Mockingbird" on Broadway, tweeted some of the screaming people fleeing the scene stormed the Schubert Theatre. The stampede made its way into the theater, scaring patrons under their seats and disrupting the production as the cast fled the stage. The production did not continue. Nearby at Junior's Restaurant & Bakery, a tourist hot spot, patrons dove under tables as those escaping Times Square made their panicked way into the restaurant. Some crawled on the ground as they made their way from the street to the door. Inside, patrons were packed together sitting on the floor, shoulder to shoulder amid spilled drinks knocked over in the chaos. CBS New York said people were literally running out of their shoes, dropping their bags, jumping over counters, even trampling those who couldn't keep up. Lots of children were crying. Abandoned shoes and purses could be seen on and around the outdoor tables at Junior's. "They jumped out of shoes," a Times Square employee said. "There were shoes everywhere." Motorcycle backfire or gunshot?A Twitter user caught the backfire sounds while capturing video of buildings in Times Square. She posted her video opining the noise didn't sound like a motorcycle backfiring. "It sounded like gunshots, it definitely did," Harlem resident Even Dore told CBS New York. "Two or three thousand people, maybe, just dissipated into thin air," he added. Times Square always has a noticeable police presence, though additional NYPD units quickly arrived on the scene due to a flood of 911 calls. The NYPD was quick to point out the situation was safe on Twitter. New York City mayor Bill de Blasio also took to Twitter to tell New Yorkers the scene was safe and to condemn the culture of fear. "Times Square is safe and secure, but the panic and fear people felt tonight was all too real," he wrote. "Nobody should have to live in constant fear of gun violence. NOBODY." Dr. Jeffrey Lieberman, chair of psychiatry at Columbia University, told CBS News the cumulative effects of mass shootings produces high levels of anxiety and fear across the country, even if you're hundreds of miles away. "You wouldn't think so, but it does," Lieberman explained. "Any type of natural disaster and in this case a violent attack ... some people are more resilient ... they brush it off ... other people are freaked for days, months, or longer."

Amnesty International is warning people to travel to the US now because of the frequency of mass shootings. Yes, they issued the warning a couple of days ago. The travel advisory addressed growing gun violence, mostly hate crimes, including racism and discrimination, highlighting that the traveler’s race, country of origin, ethnic background, sexual orientation or gender identity may place them at higher risk after recent attacks linked to white supremacist ideology. The action called attention to the extent to which all aspects of life in the United States have been compromised in some way by unfettered access to guns, without comprehensive and uniform regulation of their acquisition and use. By prioritizing gun ownership over basic human rights, the U.S. government is willfully and systematically failing on multiple levels and ignoring its international obligations to protect people’s rights and safety. linkand here is the LINK to the actual warning they gave out on their website. Ironic really when you look at the US State Dept travel warnings about other countries. Maybe they should look closer to home!

Last night during rush hour in Houston, a guy got out of his car in heavy traffic on the freeway with a large gun, possibly an AR-15, and shot and killed two people in a nearby car. Another driver who said he feared for his life then got out and fired seven rounds at the shooter, potentially endangering even more innocent bystanders. The shooter ran back to his car and drove away.
It’s a freaking third world country up in here because everyone feels like they have to solve their problems with a gun. This is the America the NRA and its religion of gun worship have created. Everyone’s carrying, and everyone’s eager to be the vigilante good guy with the gun.

We’re moving back to the US from the U.K. this weekend due to DH’s job. I have always loved the US, and we had hoped to live the rest of our lives there. Not any more, the threat of being shot in any public place and the government’s refusal to do anything about it is terrifying. I’m in the process of renewing my green card, but I highly doubt I’ll bother to become a citizen. We’re already planning to leave and we haven’t even arrived yet:(

So well we know!
On another note: dt is running his mouth about how we, the people, do not pay the tariffs! How WE, the government(treasury), are taking in so much money.... BUT the millions already take in have gone to the farmers......

Would you want to visit or live in a place where this sort of thing was a common occurrence? I guarantee you the second guy with the gun will not be charged for firing in a crowded place - they never are. A few years ago we had a guy who took it upon himself to shoot a guy stealing stuff from a GameStop in a crowded strip mall at lunch time. No charges - he was hailed as a hero! Another time, a homeowner fired several rounds at two guys literally running away from him because he thought they were trying to steal something from a neighbor's house or car. I believe he killed one of them (update: he killed both of them). No charges. Hailed as a hero. People are crazy. And even when crazy people use their guns inappropriately, we don't take the gun away or charge them with anything. Here in Texas, as long as it's a white guy, we applaud it.

On another note: dt is running his mouth about how we, the people, do not pay the tariffs! How WE, the government(treasury), are taking in so much money.... This is a total and complete lie, of course. It boggles my mind that people believe that shit. If China is going to have to pay $1.30 now to sell their used-to-be-$1 trinket here, that 30cent increase is going to be passed on to consumers, just like *every* cost of business increase has *always* been passed on to consumers. Neither China nor the company that eventually sells the trinket is going to eat that cost, and certainly the US government isn't getting any of that 30cents (until the consumer pays taxes -- on top of the higher prices throughout the year). BUT the millions already take in have gone to the farmers...... But spending government money on healthcare for ALL Americans -- not just to "assist" farmers who traditionally vote Republican but got fucked over by Trumps stupid tariffs (oopsie, better buy back those votes!) -- is socialism, which is evil.

You know if he was black or brown he wouldn't have been arrested. He'd be dead on the floor the minute the cops arrived.

So the “hero” fired seven rounds and didn’t hit his target once? Yes, let’s arm teachers and encourage Joe from next door to be a vigilante savior. Meanwhile, required training and even testing to own a gun has people up in arms.

I'm in Oklahoma. I know Oklahoma is not Texas, but we're not too far off in terms of politics. I don't watch the local news or read the local newspaper. I can't. I applaud you for being familiar with these stories. I have to spend most of my time looking away or I would drown in depression. And what's happening nationally is essentially like water over my head already. I know you relate.

I admit I'm more aware of my surroundings now. If I see a bunch of people gawking in one direction or everyone starts chattering at one time, I look around to make sure something isn't happening and I need to get out of there. When I go places, I make note of the exits. I hate that I feel I have to do that.

Now things have gotten even worse here. What will it take? How many more innocent lives must be snatched away? Nope-I refuse to go down that defeatist path. We will change things! Look at those Parkland kids and how utterly brave and brilliant they are. Change happens by voting! Thanks Fred for posting that link. It reminds us how tragically and how emotionally damaging this crisis effects us all. It's reminded me again how very important it is to get involved in this election coming up. To read all of the candidates views on the issues (Democrat for me) and decide which one is right for me. Beyond listening to just the debates (which really don't tell you anything-they get what? a minute or two to answer-I found interviews on youtube that last an hour) and of course each candidate has websites, and there are websites that list where each candidate stands on all of the issues. Going beyond that of course we can look up which candidate took money from the NRA and cross that person of our voting list. And then of course look at the candidates for all of the other spots who are running.

My heart breaks every time I hear about one of these shootings, but am I surprised? Nope. Not at all.

Our active shooter drill involved herding 20 kids into the class bathroom and locking the door. In reality of coarse I would have opened the back foot and told them to run to safety. It’s a scary time and I’m not sure it’ll ever get better.

I know how you feel. I almost wrote about that in my post right after the part you quoted where I said, "How many more innocent lives must be snatched away?" I almost wrote "If 20 dead kindergartners doesn't change things, what will?" But then I decided what does that accomplish? It's a defeatist attitude and it doesn't get us anywhere. Although it does point out how absolutely bad it's gotten here in the USA and that was how many years ago with no change and things continue to get worse. We must realize it is the NRA and the corruption in politics with current laws in place that allow the bribing (let's call it what it truly is) of senators and congressmen and women that are stopping every single gun control law from getting passed. Once we realize this we can move the power over to our hands (the public). How? 1. Research and find out who is taking the bribes from the NRA to vote the way the NRA wants them to vote-this is easily found on the internet, and don't vote for those candidates and 2. Find out which presidential candidate is including in their platform the plan to end the corruption that allows this bribing and returning the power of congress and the senate (the voting and how the system works) back to the people and not the special interest groups (like the NRA) and their bribes. At least, that's where my thoughts are now. I haven't checked in with what the Parkland kids are suggesting. They may have additional suggestions or different ones. I feel better having a plan of action and some hope rather than feeling like there is nothing to be done.

It’s basically to know where all exits are, how to alert others to what’s happening, deny the shooter access should you be able to take cover, and if all else fails how to defend ourselves if there is nothing else to do. Grab whatever you can, fire extinguishers, or whatever you might be able to get and go for the eyes, throat and groin so that you can get away. Something this 64 year old lady hopes she never has to do!

I was just talking with my husband about it. Right now there is a race horse meet that is here until Labor Day. There are many legal Mexicans here working and everybody around here knows that. I pray nothing happens. They always have their all their papers with them. It must be so frightening for them never knowing when/if something will happen.
