After about 15 years of having it done by a stylist, I decided to go for a better quality cut at a new place ($$) and then try to color it myself since it would be ($$$!) at the new place. I figure I'll about break even from what I spent at my old stylist, but the cut is so much better, I think it will be worth it.
I've watched some Youtube videos and my hair's in a short bob now, so hopefully the logistics won't be too hard. I'm a dark blonde (a little darker than my profile pic) with lots of gray/white roots to cover. Do you have a hair color brand you especially love and would recommend?

When you had your hair colored in the past, did they do an all over color and not highlights?

If you have a Sally Beauty Supply nearby, I've found their employees are knowledgeable, can recommend products, & ensure you have the necessary supplies & understand the process for at home hair coloring. I'm pleased with Wella Color Tango for covering greys.

I used the John Frieda Brand hair color purchased at Target. It was more expensive than other home kits, but it was easy to use and minimal mess and smell. And I LOVED the conditioner in the box. I stopped coloring in 2018 and I miss that packet of conditioner. They don't sell it separately.

For the past year I have purchased Madison Reed hair dye( I have some major allergy issues) which my stylist applies. She is impressed with the coverage.

I just began coloring my hair at home using Madison Reed and I've been very happy with the results and how it easy it was.

I’ve been using esalon. It gets shipped to me on my schedule and is easy to apply on shorter hair. I went to sally beauty supply and got a cape and additional application stuff. I get compliments on it all the time, although I’m about to go back to the salon cause my hair is getting too long to do it at home again. I’m with you, a great cut is worth cutting corners elsewhere. I pay $30 total to get the additional gloss for the ends. Using it as recommended really makes a difference in the result. You do have a personal colorist assigned, that you can email with pictures too, who will help you with a color selection you’re happy with.

I use L'Oreal Excellence (cover the gray formula)
I have done so for a long time....Fortunately, my DH does my roots since I can't see the back to do so. $9 per month beats the salon prices. The color 8A is so close to my natural color that no one noticed when I began to color it. Now I see much more gray in the roots than I had in the beginning, perhaps it is time to let it all grow out.

I've been coloring my hair myself for the past few years and I really love L'Oreal Preference. It turns out matching so well with my original color, covers my gray exceptionally well, lasts a long time and turns out very shiny. I've tried Natural hair color brands from Whole Foods (yuck, turned out flat and didn't last long), one from Sally's (didn't last long enough) and a couple other drugstore boxed colors (John Frieda-was too harsh) and I can't remember the last one).
It's very easy to color your hair at home. I use an old t-shirt to cover myself with and everything else comes in the box. I don't like the gloves they give you (I have small hands and they usually don't fit) so I buy a whole box of rubber gloves (I think they are actually latex) from Amazon that health care workers use in my size and keep those in the pantry to have ready ahead of time. L'Oreal Preference has the color come in a liquid form but it's so easy to use. You pour the color into the developer which is already in a squeeze bottle with a needle topped cap and shake it up. Then you start dispensing it onto your hair.
I hate the stiff brushes that Sally sells to dispense the color and used to just use my fingers. Now I use an old, very cheap makeup brush that is flat and that works much better. The hairs on the makeup brush are much softer and work much better than the stiff brushes that are sold to use for coloring hair.

Thank you all, this is so helpful! I have a Sally in my neighborhood, I'll poke my head in there to start.

(I have small hands and they usually don't fit) OMG they make them for ogres! Large sized medical gloves fit me best because my fingers are long and skinny. The coloring gloves are way too wide.

My advise to you is to buy 3 shades of color, and do patch tests to find which color you like best because it’s never the same color as on the box,

I stopped at a yard sale once where the lady had a whole bunch of little conditioners from hair dye kits for a dime each. I bought them all.

Another happy Madison Reed user here. I had never colored my hair (on my own) before and was really apprehensive about DIY hair color. Thrilled with the way it turns out. Not only do I save $$, I can also do it at my convenience.

Madison Reed here too. I have a lot of hair and quite a bit of grey. Been using it for over a year now and my hair is in good condition too. A couple people have complimented me on my hair color. I use Ravenna Brown.

Honestly, at least for my hair, I saw no difference in brands. They all worked fine.
As it turned out, the color I liked best was in the Revlon Colorsilk line. And it costs less than $3 per box at Walmart. Been using it for nearly 3 years and my hair is just fine.

For years I spent $200 a time for cut and color but have changed to doing it myself at the advice of my hairdresser. I have super easy to color hair that grows like a weed. It is thick and grows almost an inch a month. My hairdresser told me what number to get and then I started trying it. She told me not to worry about only doing the new growth. Just go for it. I have found that the brand I like best is the cheapest Revlon that is $2.96 a box at Walmart. I need two boxes each time because I have such thick hair. I do it about every 4-5 weeks and it costs me $6 and I do it while giving myself a pedicure. I honestly can’t tell the difference.

All I know is don't believe them when it says you only need it on for 10 minutes. Right. 40 is more like it.

My ex (thankfully) kept coloring my hair for years. I know pay to have it done at a salon. It's expensive. Sigh.
I have a ton of gray. I bought this brand from Sally's: Anti Aging Intense NN Shades Permanent Liqui Creme Haircolor.
It covered the gray very nicely. Leave it in the entire time. It's 40 - 45 minutes.
