So many ads for Old Navy, etc, are advertising back to school clothes.
All public, private, and charter schools in my city require uniforms. Gone are the days of everyday clothes.
So, are stores just advertising it because of the season, or can your student wear non-uniform clothing?

Regular clothes. To my knowledge, for the most part schools around here are regular clothes with the exception of private schools and the nearest big city's main public school system.

I don't know of any public schools in my area that require uniforms.
The large Catholic school has uniforms but the similarly sized non-denominational Christian School does not.

Regular, thank goodness! Both kids are on the Autism Spectrum and a uniform would be way too constricting!
Eta: the only schools who require uniforms are the 2 7th Day Adventist private schools, the 2 Catholic schools, and the 1 private non religious school. All public, Christian, and Charter schools are regular clothes.

Our school uses uniforms and allows old navy shirts and bottoms.
Logan prefers uniforms. It takes too long to decide what to wear when he gets to choose.

Elementary and middle school had standardized dress - elementary was khaki or navy bottoms and a shirt (no logos) in one of three approved colors. Middle school required jeans or black bottoms and the school t-shirt or polo. Both schools worked with families to make exceptions for kids with sensory issues.
High school was literally a free for all. As long as the important bits were covered, they didn't care what the kids wore (performing/visual arts school).
All public schools - and most public schools around here require standardized dress.

Even though my boys had to wear a school uniform to public school they still needed clothes for week ends, holidays and after school wear. Eta: around here all the public schools and most of the private schools don't wear uniforms.

No uniform. I had to wear uniforms and it's soooooo much easier. Wish my kids did.

Regular clothes. Only the lower-income schools in the nearby city have uniforms and they say they did that to help with cost of school clothes, haves and have not clothes, and to keep students from wearing gang colors.

Regular clothes. I’m pretty sure only private schools in NH wear uniforms. I’ve never heard of a public school around here requiring them.

Our Junior High has a standardized dress code (we are the only one in town that I know of that does this). It’s Khaki or Navy bottoms and red, white, or Navy tops. No logos allowed. But they can wear “spirit wear” from the school. So basically my son wears Khaki shorts and a spirit T-shirt every day.
Our elementary and high school are both regular clothes, so we just have “standardized dress” for the 2 years of JH...

This is the first time I recall ever hearing the phrase "standardized dress."
If those rules exist for student attire, do they also apply to staff?

All public schools in our city have no uniform so back to school clothing sales are legit.
My girls have worn uniforms since kindergarten. I can’t even go to old navy and buy anything. The shirts and sweaters are crested, the blouses are specific, the skirts have the proper tartan. It adds up but I buy hardly any regular clothes. I notice a difference in summer. We have to have so many summer clothes!
Non uniform days are fun for the kids. They fall regular clothes their civvies.

There are two public elementary schools, one town over, that have kids wear uniforms. Otherwise, here in the land of public schools, kids wear regular clothes. We don't really have many private schools in our area. Charter schools have tried to make it, but WA isn't really that keen on them.

This is the first time I recall ever hearing the phrase "standardized dress." If those rules exist for student attire, do they also apply to staff? It’s just a dress code versus a uniform. My niece and nephew had this. I taught in a school where the kids had a uniform and the teachers had a dress code. We had to wear black bottoms and white tops and either the school blazer (which I had to buy) or the school academic gown (yuck - that’s why I bought the blazer).

The two opposite ends of the spectrum are uniformed here... all but one private school that I can think of and the large inner city public school system. Everyone else is regular clothes. My kids have been uniformed since starting preschool when they were 2 and I love it. It makes life so much easier for all of us.

When we lived in north Chicago it was uniforms, luckily once we moved back to Washington it was regular clothes! Back then trying to find pants for tall skinny girls was a nightmare. Said girl is now 6’

My district has a dress code, but it says things like no inappropriate subject matter on tee shirts, no spaghetti strap tops, no clothing that exposes the midriff, no sagging pants, no pajamas, etc. for the students. It doesn’t say that you have to wear certain colors or types of clothing. To me, that’s more than a dress code, at least in the way it’s used around here.

We are uniform only. Small private catholic school.
First Friday of every month (and a couple of other special days thrown in) are non-uniform days. And the kids go NUTS over them.
I personally do not love uniforms. I didn’t like when I had to wear them, and I don’t particularly live my kids in them. But I adore this school.

Regular clothes for both of my boys (one is public school, the other is a small Lutheran school). The Catholic schools and a couple of public schools (Middle Schools with histories of behavior issues) within the largest district have uniforms, otherwise it's just regular clothes.
I was so thankful to realize the private school doesn't require a uniform since our youngest is so picky about what he'll wear.

We have the “standardized dress code” as we are a public school and can’t require uniforms. So therefore, it’s a strict dress code...
I don’t know the history of why it started and why our school is the only one that has this, but it does make school shopping easy lol

Both of mine are in a small private school. Younger ds wears uniforms. It has to have a embroidered crest on it, so we have to order from Lands End. Older ds is in high school (same school). He does not wear uniforms. They just have a dress code, but clothes can come from anywhere.
