The only foreign countries I have been to are Canada and Mexico, neither of which requires a passport. We are going to Jamaica next spring, so we will need to get passports for that.

We just haven’t gotten around to renewing ours. The kids don’t have them because we haven’t had an opportunity to take them out of the country. Should an opportunity arise, we will get them done.

I don’t have one right now because I haven’t traveled internationally in many years and when I got married I didn’t want to go to the passport office to deal with the name change. I’ll be fixing that soon.

I just don’t need one, or see myself needing one anytime soon. No plans to travel internationally.
I had one when I was a teen, to travel to Asia, then it expired. I had one in my 20s, for Mexico. It’s expired now. I have no desire to go international at this point. Maybe someday, but I’ll wait and get it then.

We've never had the desire or money to travel International, so never needed one. Now that we need one for a Real ID, we are in the process of getting them. Plus we moved and are only about 3 hours from Canada and we would love to do some traveling there.
I was completely SHOCKED at the price of them! I can totally see why people don't have them unless you need one, just due to the cost. By the time we paid for copies of our birth certificates and then passport costs, it's going to be almost $400 for just the two of us. And that doesn't include the cost of getting the new, Real ID's, which looks like it's an additional $78 each. UGH!

I have never had a passport because the only place that I have traveled to is Mexico and until now we've never needed a passport to do that. We like exploring the US. I have exactly zero desire to go to Europe. We are going to get passports soon because we want to go to Canada and a passport is needed for that now. Lately I've also been thinking of Australia or New Zealand. I'd like to see those countries. My daughter has had a passport since High School because she travels.

I live in a province bordering the US...about 1 hour to the closest border crossing which we go through semi- regularly for shopping. Once passports were required after 9-11 my family all got them and have kept them up to date (less hassle to renew an existing passport than to renew an expired one.) just paid for the kids renewal to adult passports which are good for 10 years, children’s are only good for 5 years, so those should be the last ones of theirs that come out of my pocket lol

I didn't have one until I was nearly 30, and that was a military-issued, official-travel only one. I didn't get a general travel one until I was in my early 40s because I had no need for one. Plus, they are not cheap. We travel a lot now so it's worth the expense.
For the record, no one in my extended family ever had a passport when I was growing up. We were too poor to travel.

I got my first passport at the age of 16 when my Oma paid for a trip for my sister and I to come to Germany and spend a month with her. Before that growing up in a family with 4 children it was too expensive to travel internationally.
I was born in Germany and at the age of 4 we traveled to Italy (which I remember), and a few other countries. I don't know if I had a passport then or if we just used my father's military I.D. Also when I was just a baby (right before I turned 1) we traveled by ship to the USA and back again to Germany (again I don't know if we used military ID or if I had a passport for that trip either).
After that trip at 16, I got my next passport at 24 to go to Japan to see my fiance who was stationed there, and stayed there for six months. I've had a passport since as I now travel more frequently internationally.
DS got his first passport at the age of 13 months when I took him to see his great grandmother (my Oma) who lived in Germany with my mother. He got his second passport at 8 when we went to St. John USVI and while we didn't need it for St. John we were glad we had it because we took a boat trip to the BVI's ( British Virgin Islands) including the Baths at Virgin Gorda. Had we not had the passports we wouldn't have been able to get off the boat and go ashore there.

I let mine expire and wished I wouldn’t have because the price has gone up, plus I could have used it when I got my Real ID drivers license when I moved to this state. I knew I would need the Real ID to fly starting in Oct 2020.
My DH has a current passport because he goes on fishing trips in Canada where he flies in to remote areas. It’s just easier.
We want to take our grandson to Niagara Falls -Canadian side next year, so I’ll need to get a new one. (The grandkid already has his.)
Plus, we want to take DD, SIL and grandson on a trip for our anniversary in a couple of years. We’re starting preliminary planning and England is at the top of my DH list.

I got a passport when I was 25. On my second passport and it will expire in about a year from now. My passport stays in my wallet. I travel even in the US with it.

I got the Real ID drivers license when I updated my license with my married name... that was only- $25? (maybe?) and the process really wasn't that difficult; I found a small, local DMV office that miraculously wasn't very busy and had the last appt of the day. You're lucky you don't live in a bass ackwards state that refuses to institute real ID forcing us to go with passports.

I've always had a passport & so have my dh/kids. It's only $120 for a 10 year one. But we travel very frequently & we only live 1.5 hours from the border so we end up needing our passports at least 5-10 times a year. The majority of people I know have passports, and actually I think it's rare in my area not to have one. I work in a bank & lot of clients bring in their passports as a second piece of ID here.

My parents nor anyone in my extended family had one while I was growing up and my parents still don’t. My mom doesn’t like traveling in the US, much less overseas, lol. I had one for a trip I took to Korea 12 years ago, but it’s now expired. My youngest ds is going to Germany next summer so I’m getting ready to get his now. I think I’ll go ahead & renew mine at the same time. DH has been talking for a while now about wanting to travel overseas & we probably will since our kids are almost all out of the house.

I now have real id (NYS). I live 10 minutes from the Canadian border and up until 9/11 we would just say "Bingo" and have a license ready if they cared to look. (Many of us in WNY would go to bingo in Canada because the payouts were better).
I went to Jamaica in 92 and only needed my license and my board of elections card - which mystified me because there is no picture on it.
Still see no need for a passport to have just in case.

I always keep my New Zealand and British passports up to date because I have close family in Europe and never know when I might have to travel in a hurry. Plus if I let the British one expire it’s such a hassle to get a new one - you basically have to prove all over again why you’re entitled to citizenship.

As a child the only country we visited outside the US was Canada (we took at least one trip per year there) and you didn't need a passport to visit. I got my first passport at age 21-ish, I need it for work (overseas buying trips). I let it lapse when I left that job and only got a new one in 2011 - when I started traveing internationally again. I can't see the need to have one "just because."

I've seen quite a few posts here over the years, including the most recent one about traveling to Canada, where people have asked if they need a passport for such-and-such. Canada, or cruising, or places like Puerto Rico. There is always a definitive answer, but I'm just wondering about people who don't have a passport. Is it because you just never imagined you'd be traveling anywhere overseas? is it not common where you live? Growing up we always had them, and my mother always told me to keep one updated. Maybe her advice was because she's from another country...? But I feel like all of my friends have always had one. It's just something you do. And certainly when one of our own kids is overseas at least one parent should have an active passport in case they needed to get to the kid quickly. Yes, State will rush your passport under those emergency conditions but that's just one more stress you don't need in that situation. I actually carry mine around sometimes even within the States. lol. Like recently I flew down to New Orleans to meet dd and drive home with her. My drivers license is set to expire in September. I know that when you travel internationally you often have to have a passport that's not set to expire within the next several months at least, so I wasn't sure if that also applied to domestic travel and drivers licenses. So just in case, I took along my passport. lol. I didn't need it but I figure it's better to be safe than sorry. I also used it at my mom's bank and with the lawyer when I was setting up all the powers of attorney... I needed two forms of ID so I just whipped out the passport as the second one. What would we use otherwise..? license and what? Anyway, just something I always wonder about when I see people who are worried about getting their passport in time for a trip, or asking questions about whether or not they need one. DH and I got one when we went on our first cruise back in 2001. We've never had it renewed because we haven't needed it. We have plans for our 25th anniversary, and will get it renewed for that. As far as I am aware, we did not have them as kids. We did go to Canada a couple of times when I was under 16, but I don't remember anyone having one.

I always have one. They are a hassle to get quickly. Plus, if someone says, "Hey, let's go to beach in the Caribbean, I don't want to get left behind."

I think now you DO need a passport to visit either Canada or Mexico. it was only required in the last year or so, though.

I've never had a passport and I'm 60 years old. I've never needed on. I traveled to Canada a couple of times pre 9-11 but not since. I used to live in NE when I was younger so it was easy to drive into Canada for the day or weekend. Live in Florida for the past 31 years so not an easy drive.
With that being said, first thing on my bucket list when I retire is a major road trip to Alaska in our RV so a passport will be in order.

I never had one until 2002. My family never even went on a vacation until I was probably 12, so I never needed one before that. DH has had one since he was a teenager because his family traveled overseas. DD has had one since she was 2. It is a pretty expensive type of ID to just have if you really don’t need it so I can understand why a lot of people wouldn’t have one if they never had any intention of traveling outside the country.

I had a passport when I lived at home for travel purposes. I let that expire and didn’t need one to go to Mexico and Canada until the rules changed. Although I don’t do much international travel, my husband does and we keep ours both updated for organizational purposes and of course just in case I need to fly to him for some emergency reason.
Once you have one, I believe it is easier and faster to renew than go through the process again.
I *wish* the reason I keep mine up to date is because I jet off to Paris occasionally! 😂

I'm pretty sure it's been more like 10 years If you're entering by land, you can use a passport card or an enhanced driver's license, but it has to be a full passport if you're flying.

You do need one for both Mexico and for Canada, although the passport card will also do for Canada (not sure about Mexico). But in addition to needing it to get IN to those countries, you'd need it (or something equally official) to get back into the United States. They're not just going to take your word for it that you're a US citizen.
