We took ours down and it looks much better. It was a minimal amount of patching. Ours did not attach to the ceiling.

I would remove and change the light- I would do a light mounted on wall instead of ceiling. I’m not a fan of fabric in kitchens so wouldn’t do a shade.

I would do a light fixture attached to the wall in a pretty finish kind of like this: Attachments:

i would remove the curved piece and extend the molding around the cabinets and the wall above the sink.

Remove and add the crown to the sides of cabinets and wall/ceiling behind. If you want a shelf I would remove the hanging pendant and install a can light. I really like the wall mounted light but that would negate a shelf.
We also removed this bridge in our remodel as well as the soffit above our cabinets. I like how clean and open it looks.

I would have them trim the edge of that piece to make it straight. As I am looking at homes on Zillow, I’ve seen many kitchens with a shaped piece above the sink and I don’t care for it. If I buy one like that, I will be cutting the curvy part off.

I like it. It's fun and retro. And I like mixing retro with a bit of bohemian and modern touches. What I don't like is the light. I would paint all of it to match the cabinets. And I would put a ceiling mounted light that was hidden and I would paint that section of wall underneath there a really bold color or put a fun piece of wallpaper up there. I would make the piece look intentional.

Does the trim piece fit with the age and style of the house, and other cabinetry? I might leave it for charm.Without seeing the whole house what looks dated might actually be character. Nah, this is a generic late-80s-build Colonial. Whatever character it has (minimal), we've added. I'd probably not mess with trim in a genuine vintage home. Ahhh, I was picturing my Grandparents 1950 Cape Cod! In this case - tear it down, and have fun!

I would remove it. It will open up that space and cost nothing but add to the overall look.

I would remove that piece. I might hang a cute kitchen sign on the piece of wall behind it.

I’d ditch it and redo the molding so it goes around the sides of the cabinet and the wall behind.

I know we all like talking home decor...here's my latest pondering. I'm having my kitchen cabinets painted in a few weeks (also new tile floor, backsplash and countertop, but the cabinets are what's pertinent here) and I'm wondering what to do, if anything about this piece above the sink that bridges the banks of cabinets. To me that cut out shape looks a little dated, but I don't know what I would replace it with. The cabinets will be painted white. We could theoretically knock it out and have the whole space above the window open, but there's all the molding to consider. I'd love to have a little shelf above the window, but there's not enough room behind the light fixture. I like the hanging light fixture okay, and I know my husband would balk at replacing it. I had a valance on a tension rod between the cabinets, hanging just under the wooden piece, and I know I don't want to put that back up, though I'd be open to a different fabric and maybe a smaller size. Honestly, I don't know what I want to do with the space. I'd love to hear any ideas at all. I had that same decorative piece above my kitchen sink. When I repainted the kitchen I just simply removed it and took the molding down as well.

That's a great update on the lighting and trim work. A very clever solution. I'd love to see more photos of your new kitchen.
We are in the middle of ours (started June 1st) and it doesn't look like it's going to be finished until sometime in late November. I'm hoping to at least have the counter tops on and sink and appliances in by the middle of October but that's looking overly optimistic. The painting started June 1st. The total demo of the kitchen started September 2nd and it's been a long month already.

We didn't replace appliances or tear out anything besides the floor...that helped streamline it. Hang in there!
