This may be a dumb question to some. So we want to get a speaker, or something we can use out by our firepit. It's too far from the house for internet connection, so an Echo won't work, right? would a bluetooth speaker work either?

When you use echo as a speaker for your phone or iPad, it connects via Bluetooth. But you would need an electrical source, no batteries. Any Bluetooth speaker would work as long as you are playing music from a device.

Yea, so we would have an extension cord out that far most likely, or half way from the garage. So the echo connects to your iphone? I've never done that!! interesting!!

For that situation, I would look for a speaker that has a rechargeable battery so you don’t need to have it plugged in all the time. We have a nice waterproof Exogear Bluetooth speaker that we bought to take on our boat. Plug it in for a while to charge the battery, unplug it and go. Anything the phone or iPad can play can be streamed through the speaker, so any downloaded music or a service like Amazon music, Google Play, I Heart Radio, Pandora, iTunes Radio, whatever.

My dd says that if you put Alexa as close as possible to the firepit -- i.e., in whatever room is closest to the outside -- it might work. We have a speaker that's rechargeable so it doesn't need a power cord. Just take that out to the firepit and see if the range is close enough.

Doubt that would work. The firepit is quite aways from the house. Yes, I was thinking of a battery operated one if we went with a speaker. I don't know why I was worried about the extension cord.

We have a few different battery operated Bluetooth speakers that we use in different places, but the Exogear is nice for that specifically because it’s waterproof. THIS IS THE ONE we have, but we got it at Costco a couple years ago. Once it’s charged up you can take it anywhere.

I’m playing Hamilton on my Echo right now from my iPad. But, I agree with the others that for your purpose, a battery operated Bluetooth speaker would be best.

Elaine, how do you synch your ipad/iphone to your echo? do you just say, play Hamilton off my ipad? or what do you say/do?

Elaine, how do you synch your ipad/iphone to your echo? do you just say, play Hamilton off my ipad? or what do you say/do? I connect my iPad or iPhone via the Bluetooth setting on my iPad/phone. Although you can ask Alexa to do it. I then manually choose what I want to play, but I’m sure that there is a way to do it verbally. For me, it is just faster to find Hamilton in my library and hit play - just I like I do with the Bluetooth Bose speaker I have in the kitchen. My husband insists on doing everything with Alexa verbally and it usually takes longer because she misunderstands something or he doesn’t phrase it correctly. When I am done, I say “alexa disconnect” and she disconnects from my iPad/iPhone.

You can connect to the Bluetooth on an Echo without using voice commands, just do it on your phones Bluetooth settings. The Echo will pop up and you can connect to it like you would any Bluetooth speaker.

"BLuetooth" simply means the wireless way one device connects to another device. An echo is a bluetooth speaker but it also needs wifi to work. Not all bluetooth speakers need wifi. They just need a music source. What source is your music coming from? If the music is located on your phone, ipad, ipod etc you can use any bluetooth speaker that doesn't need wifi. Echos, dots and other artificial intelligent devices need wifi. I use iheartradio on my phone. So I can connect my phone to a bluetooth speaker to play radio stations.

You can use it as just a Bluetooth speaker controlled through your phone. You would have to control the music using the app instead of asking Alexa to do it. Having said that, in this situation I would just buy a rechargeable Bluetooth speaker and not have to worry about an extension cord.

We have four battery-operated speakers that hold Alexa Dots on top. (The Dot is plugged into the speaker.) We normally keep the speakers plugged in charging, but they maintain several hours playtime when unplugged and wandering around. The Dot/speaker combo just needs to stay within range of the router (or my phone or whatever is providing the wifi signal) to pick up a wifi signal. We love them. yea, I'm pretty sure it won't be within wifi range. I'll try it, but I doubt it

Wifi has nothing to do with Bluetooth. You can’t use voice commands without WiFi but you can use it as a regular Bluetooth speaker.
