In the most shocking development of the NFL offseason, Indianapolis Colts star quarterback Andrew Luck will reportedly retire from the NFL. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that there will be a press conference on Sunday where the 29-year-old will announce his decision. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero confirmed that Luck has informed the Colts of his decision.

... I’m trying to watch the Seahawks preseason game and they cut out to the Luck news conference! Luck couldn’t have waited another 3 hours to announce his retirement?! I want to watch my game!
I am completely shocked that Luck is retiring at age 29.

I don’t really follow football, and I hadn’t heard of him. But it seems like more players are walking away from the game, knowing what we know now about the long-term damage from head injuries and other physical injuries.
Can’t say that I blame them. We have a retired pro football player in the family who played well into his 30s, and his health has really suffered.

We’re there rumblings about this a few weeks ago or is this the second really young (under 30s) player to do this this preseason?

Not surprised in the least. He has been plagued by injuries. He has a degree from Stanford so I'm sure he'll have a second career. Wishing him the best.

honestly, he has enough money to retire permanently if he wants to.

It seems like he was always hurt, but I did enjoy watching him play.

I heard some Colts fans booed him when he left the field. I saw that and it makes me so mad. What’s sad is that he heard it. He was by all accounts a great person and had an amazing career. He should have left to a standing ovation. It guts me that he left to boos. Some people really suck.

I don't watch football but I think these guys are making smart decisions. All the information we have learned, and are learning, about the impacts of the injuries, esp concussions and head injuries, is scary.

He made the right choice for his health & future. I give him credit.
FWIW, word is Luck intended to make announcement today (Sunday) but the press found out & put it out early.

I heard some Colts fans booed him when he left the field. I’m from Indy and, I agree, shame on them. I know fans are upset especially if they just bought season tickets, but it’s probably Isray’s fault more than Luck’s (the timing). He’s had so many injuries and he wasn’t even at training camp, so I’m not surprised. I’ll miss him, he seemed like a good guy.

My season ticket holder parents are probably all kinds of upset. They were sure this was going to be his year.
I can't believe there were Assholes booing.

I am completely shocked that Luck is retiring at age 29. I'm not. The injuries he has had (and still has) were serious. And it seems like the Colts organization was pushing him faster than he was healing. I also don't think he received the best team care. I would freak out if my kidney was lacerated as well as my abdomen and I was peeing blood. And this new leg injury that just wont heal... His body is telling him and I am glad he listened. If he was to keep going, he would be living in pain every day and suffer mentally.

My DH and son love his Twitter posts. They are so creative! The one announcing his retirement was heartbreaking.

Reportedly, Luck's degree is in architectural design, & he earned a total of $97.1MM from his NFL career. He wed earlier this year & is expecting his first child. Since networks gravitate toward former players as analysts, & his dad is the athletic director at WVU & the CEO/Commissioner of the XFL, he likely will have other opportunities if he chooses to work in the future & stay around football. Also, wishing him a speedy recovery.

Is Captain Andrew Luck on Twitter really him? I thought it was just some fan that was REALLY good at writing tweets about the games.
It is absolutely digusting that fans booed him off the field last night. I understand their frustration with the timing of it but too f@*%KI%$ bad. I'm sure Luck is absolutely heartbroken over it. I hope the good fans of the Colts make some sort of gesture in the next few days that will help him forget that he was booed off the field.

Retirement isn't surprising considering the many injuries suffered the past few years. The fans booing was truly disgusting & shameful! Their boos were misdirected! Boo the person who leaked the retirement announcement, which forced the mid-game news. Boo those who refused to build a team with players strong enough to protect the quarterback. He's taken a beating game after game, season after season.
I commend him for recognizing his mental & physical health comes first. The press conference was heartbreaking! I'm old enough to be his mother. My heart hurt watching him speak. He's not just an NFL player. He's a husband, soon-to-be dad, son & friend. His health should be a priority. He has many years to live. I pray that a full recovery is in his future. Perhaps he can coach, be a commentator or find another passion. Life is too short to be mentally & physically exhausted.
