hearing the fans booing should have told him that he made the right decision. the fans don't care about him at all. the booing fans are assholes. I absolutely love John Pavlovitz. He sees life in a way I can relate too. Hes right, the fans don't really give a shit. I never heard of LUCK I don't watch football, except the 1/2 time show at the superbowl. Who the hell are the NFL or fans to tell him when to quit. If they don't like a players who stand up for themselves and others. They will happily accept an abuser, but not a guy like Luck or Kawpernick.

I have absolutely NO issue with any football player deciding to retire from/quit playing football. None. Like heather, I do think his timing stunk. I don’t know whether to take the time to discuss the why’s, because if one doesn’t follow the sport, it won’t make much sense. But, since he knew he wanted to retire, if he did it in March, or even June, the fan reaction would be *very* different than doing it 2 weeks before the season starts when replacing him as a *franchise starting quarterback (*franchise players being different contractually than other players) is monumentally more difficult than if he chose to retire before the draft in April and all the trades that happen at that time. I wish him all the best in his future and don’t begrudge his decision to retire. It is a brutal sport with lifelong consequences. I also think that he brought a large portion of the negative fan reaction on himself by the timing of his decision. His timing is due to yet another injury. He wasn’t injured back in the spring, or at least not to the extent he is now. After a lacerated kidney, torn labrum, torn rib cartilage in two ribs, and multiple concussions, this latest injury seems to be the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. It’s a lower leg injury (torn calf muscle maybe) that isn’t healing and combined with an ongoing ankle problem meant he probably wasn’t playing again for a reason. The fans should be GLAD he retired. As long as he was on the team, they have to pay his contract, which was about $20 million with bonus. By retiring, he lets the team off the hook for paying him. Now they have his salary to put toward other players, and his backup can take ownership as the team leader without “when is Luck coming back?” questions following him all season. They can adapt to a new QB who was going to be playing a good portion of the season anyway. So what would really be worse? Sitting on the sidelines with an injury all season and collecting millions only to retire in January? Or retiring now when he knows he probably won’t be able to contribute significantly this season. Other than a few jerks like Gottlieb, he has received nothing but support from current and past players who know what he’s going through.

I'm from Indy too, and can't begin to wrap my head around the booing. So embarrassing.
Almost everyone I have talked to feels the same way as me, but I have spoken with a couple who are truly pissed about this. Blows my mind. He's not a slave for our city - if he wants to quit his job, the man gets to quit his job.
I thought it was brave and actually sent a great message to kids, that you have to take care of yourself and your family first.

We live in a society that largely believes "it's all about me." In this case, it's not about Andrew Luck's health or his future. It's about, "My team deserves to have him play this year." "I have a right to root for a team that has a shot at winning the Super Bowl." "I was counting on Luck to make it all happen for the Colts." It actually brings me great joy to see Luck saying, "I love Indy and I love the Colts and I love my teammates, etc., but I love my wife and my future kids and my own life more."
As much as I love football, the NFL (among other professional sports) is just a business that is ridiculously out of hand in terms of hero status, salaries paid and importance placed on men who play ball, IMHO. I'm happy to see a wise man standing up and saying, "None of that matters to me, and I'm going to do this my way." Blessings to him and to his family.

I guess they figure you have to be "macho" like Michael Vick.
I never heard of him until when the story broke but good for him, and his family.

Andrew Luck Doesn’t Owe Us Anything
"We talk about issues in the NFL in ways that would seem bizarre if we applied them to any other aspect of life. Typically, if we heard about a 29-year-old quitting a job in order to try something else, our reaction would probably fall along the lines of: “huh.” A 29-year-old, we would reason, is young; young people often don’t have their lives figured out yet. One of the tasks of young people is to try to find a life that will make them happy. Besides, we would think, people become disenchanted with their jobs all the time, at all ages, for all sorts of reasons. Normally, when we encounter someone who has become disenchanted with their job, our response is to say something like, “Hey, I hope you find something else you like more, maybe a different job, or else you could try going to Greece.” It is not to clench our fists, narrow our eyes, and hiss, “You owe it to me to continue doing that job, you loser—you coward.”"

"An individual that gave you everything. Sacrificed everything. The one thing he hears as he takes his final steps off the field are boos from fans... If that was you, you should be ashamed of yourself."@nateburleson was not happy with @colts fans booing Andrew Luck.
One of the last things you hear in that video is a woman screaming "Fuck Luck!" Absolutely disgusting. My mom is from Indy, so I'm a Colts fan by default (such an awesome city) and I can't believe the negative reaction to him retiring. Oh, your Fantasy Football League is now a bust? Bless your heart. Who the hell cares. This poor guy has been put through the wringer. He's going to be feeling the effects of his injuries for the rest of his life.
To be a little cougarish and crude, I probably would be screaming screw me lucky!

A lot of the "tough guys" on twitter were on about how their dads were bricklayers or some other "manly" job and had taken it in the shorts their whole lives but had to keep working to keep food on the table. 1. That is not this situation. The guy left $450 million on the table, but his family is not going on the dole. 2. It SUCKS that your parents worked themselves into the grave. The idea of life is that as we know better, we do better. The idea of life is NOT that it is SOME BIG HAZING ritual, where, if it was Hell-on-a-Stick for me, IT MUST BE HELL-ON-A-STICK for everyone!!!! I agree. My husband is a flooring installer and I’ve watched what that job has done to his body in the 17 years I’ve been married to him. This is not the same at all. He’d absolutely walk away from it too, if he was in Andrew Luck’s position to be able to. He wouldn’t wish it on anyone. FWIW I think Andrew Luck did the right thing, and “fans” like those Colts fans are what I hate most about professional sports.

Luck reportedly has been paid a total of $97.1MM & is fortunate to have the option of walking away from his NFL career. Sadly, he's an example of a player who loves a game his body no longer allows him to play. On the other hand, many non-multi-millionaires save/spend money on season/game tickets & are disappointed the product/cast & future of the team they love has changed. Usually the only fans remaining at the conclusion of preseason games are diehards & drunks, which reacted to his abrupt announcement (given the public had no idea he was considering retirement) & IMHO aren't representative of the fanbase or city.

All this nonsense over a stupid game that is on the decline in this country.
Good for him for listening to his body and saying enough is enough.
It’s not like the team doesn’t have more players to fill his spot. They need to pick one and train him up. It really doesn’t matter who it is.

Another Indiana girl here. Please don’t judge all of us Colts fans by the idiots that booed him. I admire him for listening to his body and doing what he felt was necessary. I wish him the best with his future endeavors!
