Pavlovitz: "Andrew Luck decided to take his body and go home—and good for him. He may feel badly right now, but something tells me he’ll be thankful he did. The knee-jerk reaction by fans (especially a good portion of Colts faithful, understandably) is to castigate him; t o brand him soft and a traitor, to claim leaving like this is cowardly. Anyone who says that is wrong. There’s nothing cowardly about being able to be around for your wife and kids and family for the next fifty years. There’s nothing cowardly about preserving your brain and your knees and your bones so that you can fully participate in that life. There’s nothing cowardly about choosing mental health above the applause of complete strangers. There’s nothing cowardly about declaring yourself worth more than the money to be made.... He knows that we fans don’t care about athletes. Oh sure, we may have use for them when their abilities benefit our home town or fantasy teams, but we’re not there beyond that. We’re not present as they hobble around their homes like men two decades older than they actually are. We’re not there as their cognitive abilities fail them or their minds cloud in midlife. We’re not around when their pain is profound and their depression crippling and their finances for care run out.... In a time when money is everything and when we lament the unabated greed of athletics, Andrew Luck is doing something important. He’s declaring his humanity to be of greatest value; that who he is off the field matters more than the guy who wears the uniform. He is directly resisting the antiquated “real men fight through pain” mythology that has pressured far too many sons to sacrifice themselves on the altar of false manhood. In the prime of his career and earning potential, and in the moment where the spotlight is the brightest and the accolades endless, Andrew Luck is taking his body and his brain and what’s left of his health and he’s going home." johnpavlovitz.com/2019/08/25/andrew-luck-is-taking-his-body-and-going-home-good-for-him/Yeah, a traitor. To love his wife and his family above his job and his fans. For shame! Twitter is full of vitriol for his millennial "softness". Just like boys who do ballet, AmIRite, Lara? To paraphrase Jesus, "the unthinking, you will have with you always."

"An individual that gave you everything. Sacrificed everything. The one thing he hears as he takes his final steps off the field are boos from fans... If that was you, you should be ashamed of yourself."@nateburleson was not happy with @colts fans booing Andrew Luck.

Absolutely deplorable.

I applaud his decision and the social media comments calling him ‘soft’ disgust me. Just as much as his being boo’d off the field. Heartbreaking. A lot of other players have his back, which is great to see.
Seriously though, how much more of his body do you want him to sacrifice for you, the fan? I’m sure all of these people making these comments would be willing to sacrifice their body, their health, their life like that. /s

Oh, that video. People can be so freaking awful at times. Talk about being poor sports, those fans’ behavior is inexcusable.

A typical deplorable reaction: ps - www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1996-09-13-sp-43414-story.html"Doug Gottlieb, a former Notre Dame and Tustin High School basketball player, has been charged with felony theft for allegedly using stolen credit cards to purchase nearly $1,000 of merchandise, St. Joseph County (Ind.) prosecutor Mike Barnes said.... The three students reported the thefts to a Notre Dame official after receiving bills. The matter was turned over to the South Bend police. Gottlieb played in 27 games, starting 23, as a freshman. He averaged 4.6 points and led the team with 154 assists. He has enrolled at Golden West College, but said he will not play basketball this year." I guess stealing from your roommates is the most 'Gen X' thing ever.

As a Colts fan living in Indy, I’m just appalled at the fans who boo’d him. It’s inexcusable. I used to think we had some of the best & most loyal fans (with all our sports teams) I’m now rethinking that.

I know I’m in a minority of people who don’t give a shit about football, but honestly, I think the national fascination with a sport that routinely ruins people’s health is weird and macabre. Good for him for stepping away when it felt right for him to do so.

I don’t blame him for retiring. I think the only way the NFL will start to finally take their players health seriously is if premier athletes quit.
The only criticism I have is the timing. Wish he had made the decision earlier...I am still a Hoosier. Lol. That being said, I gave up on the NFL after the Roethlisberger scandal.

I'm not a Colts fan, but wow, they should be ashamed of themselves. Wow. Good for him for taking care of himself.
And as a side note, I love Nate Burleson. He always tells it like it is.

I think it was terrible that the Colts' fans boo'd Andrew Luck as he walked off the field, and I'd like to think I'd never do something like that. However, the story had just leaked about Andrew Luck's retirement. Andrew Luck had planned to announce his retirement properly in a press conference the next day, but the fans didn't know that. I think their knee jerk reaction was that he was deserting them-he was just going to walk away without a proper farewell. I have a feeling a lot of those Colts fans woke up the next morning regretting their behavior the night before..
There are plenty of football fans who are complete and total jerks and they are very vocal on the internet, but I think the vast majority of football fans are sympathetic to Andrew Luck and wish him the best.
I think Doug Gottlieb is a Collin Cowherd wannabe who is always trying to grab headlines. There has been lots of backlash about his stupid tweet.

I'm not a football fan but I did enjoy Andrew Luck's twitter account. The tweet announcing his retirement was great and the response from most of his followers was very supportive. One that stood out to me was from Aaron Rodgers: "Brig.Gen. Aaron Rodgers@BgenR Aug 25 Replying to @captandrewluck Capt Luck, This war has been hell for a lot of men. The injuries you've sustained on the battlefield would have made lesser men retire long ago. Enjoy your well deserved retirement and it was an honor to share the same field of battle with you. God speed. Signed Brig.Gen Rodgers"

Troy Aikman really did good with his reply to Gottlieb:
That’s total bullshit Doug. What qualifies you to decide how someone should live their life? So you’re now the authority on what motivates Andrew Luck? And if his decisions don’t fit into what you think is best for him then you rip him? Guess that keeps you employed on FS1
And an even better one from Torrey Smith:
You stole credit cards because working was “too hard”

seriously, GOOD FOR HIM. i think it's harder to let go of something you love than to let it kick the crap out of you later on.
F all the haters who are calling him a quitter. it's not their brain or body. they may act like they care about having him around now but crowds are fickle. they will move on to the next favorite soon enough.
good....for....him

One of the last things you hear in that video is a woman screaming "Fuck Luck!" Absolutely disgusting. My mom is from Indy, so I'm a Colts fan by default (such an awesome city) and I can't believe the negative reaction to him retiring. Oh, your Fantasy Football League is now a bust? Bless your heart. Who the hell cares. This poor guy has been put through the wringer. He's going to be feeling the effects of his injuries for the rest of his life.

I don't follow football and don't even know who Andrew Luck is/was, but I heard an interview this morning on the radio by someone (sorry, not trying to be vague.... see my first line!) who was in sports who was chastising people for being mean/rude to Luck. He said something like "How dare they criticize Luck for wanting to stay healthy enough to play with his own children instead of staying in the game for their own enjoyment". The interview was very well said and if I had a clue who the guy was, I'd be happy to post the interview here!

His health matters more than a stupid game. I have never heard of him and the tv interviews were the first I ever heard him , but I would have never thought him to be so young....there is way more going on with him than is the public’s business.
I wish him well.

One more thought: The news this morning was talking about how he was potentially leaving 1/2 billion dollars "on the table" by walking away/retiring. The newscaster was being a bit sarcastic about it but, man, all the money in the world is worth nothing if your body/health is shot...

A lot of the "tough guys" on twitter were on about how their dads were bricklayers or some other "manly" job and had taken it in the shorts their whole lives but had to keep working to keep food on the table.
1. That is not this situation. The guy left $450 million on the table, but his family is not going on the dole.
2. It SUCKS that your parents worked themselves into the grave. The idea of life is that as we know better, we do better. The idea of life is NOT that it is SOME BIG HAZING ritual, where, if it was Hell-on-a-Stick for me, IT MUST BE HELL-ON-A-STICK for everyone!!!!

I know how disappointing it is when a favourite player decides to retire at a time that we (the supporters) think is premature. One of the best loved players from my AFL team, my very favourite player, retired out of the blue halfway through last year. As silly as it sounds, I still feel empty because we the fans didn't get to give him a big send off, and I didn't get to see him play "one more time". But never ever in a million years would I, or anyone else, boo a player for retiring. I have never seen that happen in the AFL - thank goodness. (I've seen opposition players booed for other reasons, of course.)

I say good for him. His health, his ability to be there for his family, all more important than the game.
If anybody wants to know about the toll professional sports can take on the body, check out Dan Carcillo's twitter. He lays it all out there and advocates for those sports have harmed.

I have absolutely NO issue with any football player deciding to retire from/quit playing football. None. Like heather, I do think his timing stunk. I don’t know whether to take the time to discuss the why’s, because if one doesn’t follow the sport, it won’t make much sense. But, since he knew he wanted to retire, if he did it in March, or even June, the fan reaction would be *very* different than doing it 2 weeks before the season starts when replacing him as a *franchise starting quarterback (*franchise players being different contractually than other players) is monumentally more difficult than if he chose to retire before the draft in April and all the trades that happen at that time. I wish him all the best in his future and don’t begrudge his decision to retire. It is a brutal sport with lifelong consequences. I also think that he brought a large portion of the negative fan reaction on himself by the timing of his decision.
