I'm on vacation but didn't want to miss this thread again! I've been reading pool side, which is just the best place to read. I put down one plus one a couple of weeks ago because life got in the way. I picked it back up and am Loving it! I also downloaded Dark Places based on a rec last week. Can't wait!
What is everyone else enjoying!
Paige.

My book club pick this month is Rebecca by Daphne de Maurier. I am LOVING it! It is so very well written that I'm really dreading when I finish it. Can't wait for our book club discussion in a couple of weeks -- should be a lively one.

I read Bittersweet by Miranda Beverly-Whittemore. It was interesting at the start then kind of leveled out and picked up at the end. Overall, a good book with an interesting ending. It makes you think what are you willing to do in the name of justice and what are you willing to overlook.

Hi Readers,
I'm working on David Mitchell's The Bone Clocks. it's a good one.
Jason Mott's newest title, The Wonder of All Things looks like a good next book. He wrote The Returned.
Happy Reading!

I am looking forward to reading Rebecca. On my phone right now, so I am not bolding.
Two for me this week.
I finished Code Name Verity. Oh. My. Worrrrd. I absolutely loved it! Amazing. Why did it take so long for the plot to warm up? Anyhow, 5/5 stars, definitely.
I also read If I Stay. It was decent enough. But sickeningly sweet. And overrated. I won't see the movie or read the sequel. 3/5 stars.

gottapeanow I'm glad you enjoyed Code Name Verity and I agree it took a bit to get warmed up. I gave up most of my life last week to finish Natchez Burning and I'd love to recommend it, but can't because the last few chapters were so over the top that I felt like I was reading a Michael Bay script. You are seriously asked to suspend any sense of reality in the climatic showdown at the end.
I didn't realize this was the first book in a trilogy and so many story lines had great potential but were ignored or underdeveloped that I stopped caring about them and really doubt I will bother to read the next book. I am starting Liane Moriaty's Big Little Lies today.

On the last chapter of Ken FOLLETT'S EDGE OF ETERNITY....... Loved it. Last week I finished Ken Follett's Winter of the World. It took me a couple of weeks to read, but I really enjoyed it. I'm taking a short break before I move on to the third part of the trilogy! Have you read the first two books? How did Edge of Eternity compare? I also read The Memory Book by Rowan Coleman, which was very touching. It was about a woman who had Early-Onset Alzheimer's (she was 40). If you like Jojo Moyes, then I would recommend this one.

I read a quick and lighthearted book : Spitfire (Sandoval). The central character is a 20 something documentary film maker working as a receptionist to make ends meet. When a friend is found murdered, her entire life becomes a bit insane. Believe it or not, it's mostly a comic novel. It has the same feel as the Lisa Lutz Spellman Files series. A fun and enjoyable read.

I haven't posted for a couple of weeks, haven't really been in the reading mood. My Dad died 2 weeks ago and it's been a very difficult time. Dad was a big reader and we often discussed books and unfortunately one of the effects of all the pain killers he was taking was that he lost the ability to concentrate enough to read.
Dad was also a lover of art and a painter himself, so in September I only read books about art so I could tell him about them while he was in the palliative care ward (hospice).
My last art book was Madame Picasso by Anne Girard but I never got to tell him about it as he was too sick by then. I finished it anyway to honor his memory. It's a mix of fact and fiction, the basic story is fact - about a young French girl who leaves home without her parent's permission to live in Paris and eventually she meets & hads a relationship with Pablo Picasso (who is just on the cusp of fame). While that part is all true...the details of their relationship, conversations etc is speculative fiction. I really enjoyed this and gave it 4 stars.
Then I needed to move away into something totally different, so I listened to Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes (the same author who wrote The Shining Girls which I loved). This is in the same vein, a serial killer, a bit of paranormal and some kick ass female characters. I really like her writing but I thought the paranormal aspect took a bit away from the story rather than added to it. Still liked it overall though. 3.5 stars,
Staying with the "not quite reality" theme, I am currently listening to The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender by Leslye Walton classed as magical realism it's the story of a girl born with the wings of a bird and she delves back in her family's history to try to discover why. It's read by my favourite narrator (Cassandra Campbell) and I am being carried along with this story.

The book is a sequel to the Daphne du Maurier novel Rebecca and is officially approved by the Du Maurier estate. It continues the original plot and is also roughly consistent with the 1993 sequel Mrs de Winter by Susan Hill.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss, Pjaye.
I decided to try out one of the Kindle First selections for October. It's called My Sister's Grave. Here is the description from the Amazon page:
Tracy Crosswhite has spent twenty years questioning the facts surrounding her sister Sarah’s disappearance and the murder trial that followed. She doesn’t believe that Edmund House—a convicted rapist and the man condemned for Sarah’s murder—is the guilty party. Motivated by the opportunity to obtain real justice, Tracy became a homicide detective with the Seattle PD and dedicated her life to tracking down killers.
When Sarah’s remains are finally discovered near their hometown in the northern Cascade mountains of Washington State, Tracy is determined to get the answers she’s been seeking. As she searches for the real killer, she unearths dark, long-kept secrets that will forever change her relationship to her past—and open the door to deadly danger.

I'm sorry for your loss, Pjaye.
The last time our family experienced a great loss I remember coming to this thread looking for a title that could help me escape. And I remember that Batya helped me find the perfect book.
Many hugs to you and your family, Paige.

Pjaye - I'm so sorry. I had two finishes this week. On Kindle I finally finished Written In My Own Hearts Blood by Diana Gabaldon. As I'm sure you all know it is the latest in the Outlander series. It took me weeks to read this, partly because we were on a road trip and I don't usually read that much while traveling and partly because I didn't find it believable (as much as you can find a time traveler book believable! Ha!). The ending maybe the last 100 or 150 pages were the best for me. No spoilers here, but I can't wait until one of my IRL friends reads it to discuss. Maybe they will sway me into liking it. On audio, it was Peony in Love by Lisa See. This was an older book of hers, from 2007. It was a library download and I don't know why I stuck with it. Maybe because I enjoyed LS previous books. Anyway, I wanted to slap some sense Peony before _____ and dot her tablet for her after and be done with it. (If you read this you know what I'm referring to...) gottapeanow and bc2ca - I'm glad you liked Code Name Verity. I'm starting it on my commute tomorrow. hockeymom4 - I was listening to Edge of Eternity on audio and kept getting confused and stopped 4 hours in. Glad to know it's good, I'll try again.

[HASH]Pjaye, I am so sorry for your loss. It sounds like you had a very special bond and have wonderful memories to comfort you. Hugs. [HASH]bc2ca, I had won an ARC of Natchez Burning and loved it. Even so, I agree with your points. I felt that the lingering questions weren't terrible cliff hangers but piqued my interest enough to make me want to read the next books. On the other hand, The Maze Runner drove me nuts because The entire ending was a complete cliffhanger. Ugggg. No thanks. I really liked the rest of the book until the very end. However, I thought the movie was better. Lisa

pjaye - so sorry for your loss.
I finished three books this week. The Secret Place by Tana French. I enjoyed this one, but didn't like it as well as her previous books. Her previous books have been good solid mysteries. She included a supernatural element in this one and I didn't care for that aspect. 4/5
Robogenesis by Daniel H. Wilson. This is a sequel to Robopocalypse. I really enjoyed this one. If you like science fiction I would recommend it. 5/5
The Dead Will Tell by Linda Castillo. The latest in a mystery series set in Amish country. I am enjoying this series. 5/5

I'm so sorry Pjaye. I haven't posted in a couple of weeks either. I was waiting on the MOBY Gabaldon book from the library. I got halfway done the first time around but couldn't renew because there was a wait list. I finally got it back and finished it. I really liked it. BUT- I thought I had 15-ish pages to go when the story ended. The rest was acknowledgements. When I finished the book and realized it was the end, I actually yelled at my ipad. Can't believe it ended on that note and now I have to wait years for book 9. I followed up with Outlander 8.5- A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows. It deals with what 'really' happened to Roger's parents. I don't really know how I feel about it. It was a good read- and short! But it didn't add much to the story. It actually made it more tragic. Still finishing the Theresa Caputo book There's More to Life Than This. It's kind of dragging, to be honest. I really like her, and there are interesting points in the book- but it feels very choppy and redundant at times. I find myself thinking about outlines and how I would have tightened things up- and it's very distracting. I try to re-read a favorite King book in October - so now I've moved on to Night Shift.

Gottapeanow-so glad you stuck with Code Name Verity and enjoyed it. Smayer-I listened to Code Name Verity on audio and that remains one of my favorite audio books. There are two voices that do the narration. The one who does the first half, I could listen to all day long. Pjaye-I'm sorry for the loss of your dad.
Almost done with Voyager. There is so much of this story that I have loved. But as I near the end and yet another catastrophe is about to hit them, I'm kind of feeling like this is a season of 24. Can't they just have a few months where they live blissful and without the forces conspiring to kill one or both of them??? Lol
