In the Ravelry group she states that she does this on purpose. So, my bad. I will make all my corners even, because I don’t have the pulling issue that she does with the first corner. I'll have to go look it up but why would she do this on purpose? It just doesn't make sense to me. But then again, I'm an accountant so I'm all about even numbers. It will possibly depend on the height of your stitches. I prefer to use 2ch when turning to substitute for a dc, but I know it is more usual to use 3ch.

Popping in to wave hello. I have been working on a painting as well as my crocheting. I have been missing all the fun here. Glad to see you all are crafting away. I just posted a NEW blog post about my experience with arts and crafts. It was inspired by that Australian article I shared last week with you. But I added my own observations. Stop by if you can. Thanks! Crafting Is Good Medicine, YES!

Here is the test square - I was able to get it done while prepping/cooking dinner: I’m not going to block it. It is a little larger than 16 cm - closer to 16.5/17.0 - but since the yarn I’ll be using is lighter-weight, I think using a 4.0mm hook should be fine. The yarn calls for a 3 mm hook, but I am a tight crocheter (and knitter), so I always go up 1-2 sizes in hooks/needles. This is definitely a square that anyone can crochet - even early on beginners. If anyone needs help, just ask here. Quite a few people here can help.

I agree, but the designer asks everyone to slip stitch into the 3rd chain and only leave 1 chain for the corner. When asked about it on Ravelry, she clarified that that is what she does and so how she wrote the pattern. I’ll stick to my way, but since it is her pattern and her CAL she gets to do it her way.

elaine or anyone else doing the CAL- I am doing the Sweet Meadow one. For my practice swatch I am using the Vintage Blue. And I'm about to pull my hair out. The yarn unravels SO easy. Seriously, just starting my initial chain it was unraveling. Am I doing something wrong? (Remeber, new to crochet!) I'm getting so frustrated, it is taking me long than it should since it starts unraveling, I have to be super careful about making sure my hook goes through all pieces of the unraveled yarn, or pulls just the piece I need and doesn't accidentally pull one thread withit, etc. Is this normal? Any tricks to make it easier?

It's just gorgeous JoP. I love the whirl you chose. And the blocking came out great. I'm close to done with mine too. And I can't wait to finish it.

I have to say that would irritate me to the point where if it was all my skeins, I'd send it back and choose something else.

I hate the thought of having to return it, since I'd have to ship it back to the UK. But I seriously can't imagine dealing with a whole unraveling skein. I'll email them, hopefully they have a good suggestion. Thanks!

That's pretty normal for crochet, known as splitting, and I think most of us just get used to it. How easy it is to work with can be affected by the kind of hook you use - try a different brand if you have one to see if that's any better for you. Also worth a read - these articles about yarn twist: yarnsub.com/articles/twistdorischancrochet.com/2014/03/03/crochet-and-yarn-seriously-twisted/

Well, I just cancelled my Wool Warehouse purchase because apparently the yarn pack from Black Sheep Wools that I requested a refund on because I didn't want the color substitutions has just shown up at my door. ETA: I just had Jeremy open it. And it seems I got the original colors and not a substitution at all. So I'm keeping it. And I don't feel too bad about cancelling the other order.

Any tricks to make it easier? Unfortunately, bamboo and bamboo blend yarn tends to be more splitty than many other types of yarn. It is a very smooth/slippery fiber. You will need to pay attention to begin with, but I think that if you stick with it, you will get the hang of it. Go slowly and try, if you can, to be sure to keep as much twist to the plies as possible. Also, try to keep your tension on the loose side, that way there will be larger holes in the stitches for you to then go into with your hook. I think that after being careful and paying more attention than you should have to to the first square or two, then each square will get easier and you will know how to insert the hook to minimize splitting.

Any tricks to make it easier? Are you pulling from the middle or the outside? Try pulling from the other end and see if it helps. Sometimes yarn is plied in such a way that it works better in one direction than the other. You might also try a different style of hook.
