I’m about to pull the trigger on a new (refurbished) iMac from Apple. What are your thoughts on getting AppleCare? Is it necessary/worth it? I NEVER get extended warranty’s but for some reason I seem to be enticed by AppleCare.
I have a 2011 MacBook Pro that is no longer updating. It’s awesome but slow. I have plenty of storage and it runs great except for being slow. I got AppleCare for it and never used it.

I am an Apple junkie - I upgrade my iPhone eery year, my iPad every other year, have had multiple Watches, use Apple laptops, etc. We currently have four iPhones, four iPads, three laptops and one Watch. I have never purchased AppleCare and have never regretted it.
ETA: If we purchased AppleCare routinely on our devices, a lowball estimate of what we would have spent on AppleCare to date - that we never would have used - is $3400. That's not cheap insurance to me, and running those numbers makes me even more confident in my decision not to buy it lol

Im not as Appley as busy, But I have many devices as does my hubby. I always purchase Apple Care. That being said, I usually purchase extended warranties on big ticket items(just my own personal thing). When my iPhone 7 crapped out(a known problem) it was still under care and was replaced for 0 dollars. I had heard that others had to pay $200.00 for a replacement. I always think decisions like this are very personal in nature and not a one size fits all decision.

We are an Apple family, and we only buy Apple Care for our phones and iPads, basically items that we carry around. I don’t take my laptop anywhere, so I didn’t buy Apple Care for it. In all our years of owning Apple products, I’ve only used Apple Care once, for my phone. We’ve never had a problem with our macs outside of the warranty period (knock on wood).

my dh, who retired from apple and has been a techie person his whole adult life would say applecare is a must buy. it is cheap to purchase up front, rather than pay for problems. you get american support people and you can call as often as you want. they can mirror your computer and help you. he doesn't help much when relatives ask...he says call applecare. I call it cheap insurance.

I stopped purchasing AppleCare about 8 years ago. They are quality products. The only issue I ever had was when the motherboard died in a refurbished MacBook I bought four years prior. I didn't want to upgrade to a newer MacBook (didn't have the specs I wanted) so I paid the $400 to have it fixed.

I get it. Why? Because at some point I had a defective iMac that was 3-4 years old. They gave me, gave me a new one. It was updated as the one I had they didn’t make it anymore.
I just had an issue last Christmas, I think, with my laptop. It began to have missing pixels. It’s a 2015 laptop. Took it in. They fixed it at no charge. It would of been $800 to fix it. It was no charge because of Apple Care.
The support that they offer is second to none. I get Apple Care each time we get a device. It has paid for itself with only 1 issue.

I don't have a lot of experience with iMacs (and by that I mean any) but I am responding because my husband and I went out on his birthday last year, which was in early August, and bought the latest iPad and the latest MacBook Pro because the screen on my former MacBook Pro went kaput when it slid off the couch. I was still in school a year ago and I really had to have a functioning computer pretty quick.
Anyway, yesterday my husband came and showed me his iPad. He dropped it on a tile floor and the screen shattered. Our homeowners insurance has an electronics rider that covers stuff but there is a deductible of a hundred bucks or maybe two hundred bucks. So then I was like "Surely we got AppleCare on these things after we went in there with a busted MacBook?" And we did. It would've been less than 30 days out of warranty had we not gotten it. So he went to the Apple store today, paid $49, and has a brand new iPad again.
I think it's a great thing for stuff that's more prone to damage, portable stuff. I'm not 100% sure about an iMac. I just know it paid for itself and then some today. Plus, it's just so easy. Make an appointment, walk in and they get you quickly sorted.

We bought Apple Care on the kids iphones when they were middle school/ high school and used it several times. We have purchased apple care for our Macbooks. My dd had an issue with her Macbook at college. They were able to fix it at no cost. When she had another issue with the same Macbook they replaced it with a newer model because they no longer carried her model-- for free. It definitely paid for itself for us.

Ds has always had applecare for his iphones. He has used it at least 4 times for manufacturer defects. (I think he got his first iphone 5ish years ago

Yes. For what it costs, even refurbished, it's worth getting the extra two years of coverage. I only wish they let you extend the warranty after that. My apple care expires this December, and I'm not going to lie, I'm feeling a little nervous not not having that warranty.

We've had 2 new Time Capsules and lots of Genius Bar help on various items over the years, and that would have cost us far more than paying for individual help/repairs.

I had 3 Apple II Cs in my classroom in 1988 cuz I am all kinds of extra like that (my dad got them from his office when he retired). My 2011 MacBook Pro started to go rogue with the graphics a few years ago. I brought it into the store and they whisked it away to California where they put in a new graphics card for free because they said the 2011 laptops had had an issue with them and they just replace them for free because Apple stands behind it products. They also straightened a few prongs on the charging port because they were a little wonky.

No, both kids have mac books, iphones and ipads and I have an ipad. We didn't get apple care on any of them and have never needed it. One time dd's phone got soaked at outdoor music fest during a torrential down pour we had to replace it but I'm sure apple care wouldn't have covered it.

And I’m with you, there is something a tiny bit affronting about forking over a lot of money for their (admittedly excellent quality) products and paying for apple care on top of it. I mean I guess it is *cheap* in comparison to the price you pay for apple products, but I agree it’s a lot on top of the product.

I've never bought a warranty for any Apple product purchased. We've had multiple iPhones( we tend to keep them 4 yrs or more each), 2 iPads, and a Mac. Never needed a warranty ( I hope I didn't just jinx us)

Did you know that the genius bar is free with or without apple care? Yes it is free, however if there is any technical work that has to be done on the equipment then there is a charge. Most issues with the products are user error, hence the Genius Bar. The consultant can teach someone how to do what they are trying to do. If it isn’t a user error, then the cost of repair comes into the issue.
