I have some areas in my home that need decorating and I would love to support local artists and buy their work. How do you go about finding them? Obviously I can look for local art shows and galleries, any other ideas? I'm open to anything--painting (watercolor, oil, etc.), photography, clay sculpture, etc.
thanks! Merilee

If you go on Etsy, you can filter by location.
I also go to craft fairs and street festivals. Not sure if Renegade Craft Fair comes near you, but it’s an awesome source of local or regional artists.

Typically by all of the ways that you have mentioned but mostly just word of mouth. Our hospital showcases a lot of local artists’ work all through out, so I have found locals there that I have looked more into. Our local TV station does a series on local artist and products. Also local newspaper and magazine stories. We also have an open studio weekend for local artist/crafters twice a year put on by the Vermont craft council. They print a map and list all the people participating throughout all of Vermont. Then during the weekend those artist open up their homes/studios so that you can check them out. Maybe your area has something like that? Although I come from an area pretty rich with local artist, crafters, and some local products, so it really isn’t hard to find them. Good luck. I love finding new artist that I love.

We have an art museum in our tiny town. Sometimes they feature local artists, and sometimes it’s nationally known artists.
We also have a place for local artists to house their studios. Admission is free, and we can go in and tour the hallways and peek into the studios. Often the artists will have their work on display in the halls, outside their doors, and in the larger spaces of the building in addition to their studio space. It’s pretty awesome in there.
And then there is the giant art fair that our town puts on every year in July. Local artists come, as well as artists from all over the country come to display and sell their work. It is my favorite big event that our area does. I love seeing (and buying) their creations. It’s so nice to be able to talk to the artist about his or her creations as well. The art museum above puts out a directory of vendors each year, and if you ask the people at the front desk about the artists they can usually point you in the right direction if you want to buy their art outside of Art Fair.

We have a huge art festival a couple of times a year. We discovered a great local artist there and have purchased about 5 pieces of his.
There is also an art district near my house which I think is about 5 or 6 buildings of artist space. They have events on the weekends combined with farmers markets and breweries, so you can make a day long event. I've bought some nice jewelry and gifts there.

Our local coffee shops feature a different local artist every month. I always love going in at the beginning of the month to see who they're all featuring!

Facebook. We have "I Made It" markets and other pop up artists markets. I see them on FB under the actual market page, the artists' pages, the community that is hosting the market, etc.

We have a world famous wood/metal artist and I never knew of him until he had a rummage sale! His works are in museums! He rarely sells locally because nobody can afford his pieces or appreciate it.

the Hospice facility in our area showcases local artists work - they hang artwork in the corridors and purchase helps support hospice care. We've purchased a couple of pieces from there.
Our library does an art show yearly - the art hangs in the library and is available for purchase
one of my doctor's offices (a big medical group of specialists) has local art hanging in their corridors as well that is for sale.

You can also search IG with location and style specific hashtags like #sandiegoartist and the hits will usually link you to an Etsy shop. I just found a couple things to add to my Christmas list.

Look at a custom frame shop's Facebook page. The one near me is always posting local artwork they have framed.

Merilee Visit local galleries and art shows. Make note of artists names. Even if you don't see something that immediately appeals to you but you like the overall style, go home and google their names. You will likely find their websites and more pieces that weren't in the gallery/show. Then start watching your computer ads for art. You may very well find facebook targets you for other nearby artists. Don't be afraid of artist rabbit holes on google either. Google things like Sculpture and city name/state. The first links may be public sculptures in your town but go in a couple of pages and you likely will find local artists.

Look for Arts Councils in your town or neighboring towns. Some are more active than others. Two of my neighboring towns have galleries of local artists work you can purchase and hosts some annual events.
You may find things at local festivals. Is there a tourist town anywhere nearby? Even if it is 50 or more miles away, there might be an art event that has local artists on display. Sometimes you find there is an artist right in your backyard but you only connect with them at an event.
If you would like wall quilts, fall is the perfect time to go to a local quilt festival. Many towns have a quilt guild and some will have shows. What you see may not be for sale but you can find out the artists names and contact info.

The State Fair is a great place to find local up and coming artists and often those pieces displayed are for sale. The exhibit in the Fine Arts and Education building during the fair is huge and showcases all types and styles of artwork. County fairs also have art exhibits. It might be too late for this year but it’s something you could consider in the future.

There is probably a local art alliance, guild, or council. They may have a website with artist links to their work. I'd start there. I'd also google "artist *town name*" and see what comes up. Visit local art fairs too.

Our area has a monthly newspaper that has articles on any and all types of entertainment available in both our area and some of the outlying areas. There are always articles/ads for art shows and galleries. Best part-the paper is free and can be picked up at dozens of places.

Our local city does a art hop the first Friday in the month. All the local artists come out and it's really a enjoyable evening seeing all the local talent.
