We are heading to Portland for a family vacation. My husband and son will go fishing at Crater Lake. I am going to stay in Portland with my daughters. Can anyone recommend some sites we can visit? Thanks. Beth

How old are your daughters and what do you like to do. Will you have transportation?

Because of the Crater Lake reference, I'm going to assume Oregon. I went last summer and this is what we did: (p.s. I love food) Visited the food carts at 10th & Alder. Went on a food truck walking tour. Visited Powell's Books, went to VooDoo Doughnuts, and visited the Waffle Window.
Loved the energy of Portland, enjoy your trip!

Check out Voodoo donuts while you are there!
My husband travels to Portland for work a few times a year and he brings us back donuts from this place every trip! I'm shocked the airport allows it, but they do! He said there is always several people in the airport with a box of these donuts as a carryon!
Other than that, sorry, I'm no help - never been there myself. Hope you all have fun!

Food, food & more food! Portland has some of the best! Voodoo Donuts is just okay, if you want a great donut try Blue Star Donuts, they make the best donuts around! Voodoo is fun for experience, but they are not that good to eat, plus the line is so long! OMSI is so cool to see, take the submarine tour & if you like adventure try the Willamette Jet Boat tour. Make sure to try Salt & Straw Ice Cream. Pittock Mansion has a cool tour, but it closes at 4pm. Saturday & Sunday Market on the waterfront is okay, a lot of people down there, but a great time to people watch. The zoo is nice. Washington Park has miles of hiking & trails. There are several parks in Lake Oswego that have beach access to the Willamette River if you are looking to just relax. If you like shopping, the downtown mall is kind of cool. I like to hit up all the smaller shops downtown for items not mass marketed. Also check Groupon of local deals. Have fun while you visit, it's really a great city!

Do you want to only stay in Portland, or are you open to exploring the area, but not going as far as Crater Lake?
The coast is wonderful (Cannon Beach, Manzanita) and is about 90 minutes from Portland. The Columbia Gorge is also gorgeous and Hood River is a fun little town. Also about 90 minutes from Portland. Mt Hood is very close as well. The Portland Farmers' Market at PSU on Saturday mornings is fantastic, and the Saturday Market on the waterfront is fun (a "very Portland" outdoor arts & craft market that's open on Sundays too LOL). I think Voodoo Donut is overrated and avoid it. Stumptown Coffee is excellent. Powell's Books is a must-visit. The food carts are quintessentially Portland and really should be tried. There's a huge variety, it's not just tacos and hot dogs.
There is so much to do in the Portland area. What are your interests?

Thanks for the replies. We are going to Portland ,Oregon. The girls and I will stay in a hotel in the downtown area. Will definitely find the food trucks and do some shopping. Are there any quilt stores near by?

Monticello Antiques is my favorite antique mall in the NW. They have a cute lunch place, too, if you're out and about. About 10 minutes from the airport -- 8600 Stark Blvd. They've got a blog, too, I think that you could preview to see if you're interested.

Depending on when you are visiting and how far you may want to travel - you might also consider:
The Oregon Gardens in Silverton Aurora for antiques (although sometimes pricey) Wine Country - Dundee, etc. Salem waterfront carousel and downtown area is nice. Evergreen Aviation museum and water park are cool. Downtown McMinnville has lots of great shops. There is a quilt shop in down town.

Oh, I agree with MizIndependent. If you and your girlies like books, even a little bit, plan a day for Powells. You could zip out, grab lunch and zip back in. Plan to get lost, literally. Don't panic, they have maps! Walking along the waterfront is fun too. Lots of bridges, people watching; it's a beautiful area.
