Well, I had a totally different talking point picked out for this wk, but it changed after spending the wkend with my BFF. I haven't slept since....Wednesday. At least it hasn't felt like it. My bff snores. bad. Like all night. We always have a fan running in our room, and do at home, but even with the fan running I could not zone her out. At home I've been having a harder time sleeping also. I need a fan running. Get up to the bathroom like 3xs a night. Wake up early, when before I used to be able to sleep in to at least catch up!! but not anymore...I'm always tired, but can't sleep.
So talking point this wk is ***SLEEP*** has your sleeping habits, patterns, etc changed as you've gotten older? If worse, what do you do to help make it better? If you sleep good, WHAT do you do?! Maybe you sleep better as you've gotten older?

I have chronic fatigue due to my illness, so sleep for me is different than for many people. I will wake up to use the bathroom(thanks childbirth) once or twice per night, but I sleep a lot. I sleep 9-10 hours per night and wake up tired. So, don't go by me. I can tell you that acupuncture works wonders for insomnia and sleep issues.

Funny you picked this one - I just told dh that I must be getting old since I can't sleep anymore. But I want to!! I have tried to be more active and cut down on my sugar intake. It's only been a week or so since I started to get serious about this sleep thing but I haven't noticed any improvements yet.

I can only sleep thru the night if I've been drinking wine...otherwise, I'm awake for at least 2-3 hours each night. I think mostly its stress related...and as soon as the stress goes away then hopefully I can go back to all-night sleeping. In the meantime - it sucks!

I sleep really well, I have no trouble falling asleep and staying asleep all night. I only have to get up to use the bathroom if I'm ill.

Maybe you sleep better as you've gotten older? I have a to have a fan or white noise on...that changed about 10 years ago when I hit 50...(hope it's ok to post in this thread). I also get up 2-3x to pee...not all the time but often. I shared a room once with a really bad snorer and it was HORRIBLE. I did not sleep at all. I have since invested in some ear plugs

I had earphones with, and actually downloaded a fan app, and listened to that on my earphones, but I have to sleep on my side, and it would push the ear piece in too much, and it hurt. I bought some ear plugs once, but they freaked me out. I was like. how do I get them out?? I'd end up in the ER or something...

I've noticed my sleep patterns have changed within the last couple of years and I'm 60. I can no longer sleep in if I have the chance to do so. I'm up around 8 am no matter what time I go to bed. I used to be a total night owl--usual bedtime was between 1-3 am. So I am definitely going to bed earlier, but probably still late by conventional standards--between midnight to 1 am. I had recurrence of Cushing's disease this year, and as part of my goal to handle the recurrence better than the first occurrence, I resolved to keep my stress levels as low as possible, because Cushing's is caused by the body oversecreting the stress hormone cortisol. So part of my effort was to get plenty of sleep and many times prior to my surgery, I was in bed by 10 or 11. It's really had a dramatically positive effective on my life, so I try to have at least one or two early bedtimes a week. Aside from the time that DS was looking at colleges/waiting for acceptances, I've always slept well. I have always had a before bed ritual which is connected in some ways to my childhood incest experiences. I always, always, always have a shower right before bed with lavender shower gel. The bedroom is kept very cool, with a ceiling fan going year-round, and we have a fairly heavy down comforter on the bed year-round. I either read before bed, or watch You Tubes of artists doing artistic stuff.

I find I wake easier when I turn over. I'm a side sleeper, and if I stay too long on one side my hip starts to hurt (I'm a mess lol). I was finding I'd turn over, and I would hear DH snoring, or I'd hear the birds outside the window, and then my brain would turn on with "don't forget this, we need to do that" stuff.
Got me some ear plugs. DH works in an automotive stamping plant, so he brings home handfuls of the yellow foam earplugs for me. I use the same pair for a good long while. After a week or two they tend to not work as well, but it still keeps out the bulk of snoring and any outside noises that would get me up and turn my brain on.
I do find my internal clock has gotten very regular in the last 5 years or so. I spent 4 years driving my oldest to a magnet school, and carpool left at 7am. So now my freaking internal clock gets me up by 6:30. If I sleep beyond 8am it is a miracle.
We bought a new bedroom suite last week, and now I get to go mattress shopping. I'm really hopeful that will also help with better sleep!

I have really been doing the same thing for years and years. I wake up around 5 a.m. naturally seven days a week. I am worthless after 6 p.m. I usually fall asleep on the couch by 8:30 p.m. each night. Stay there until I wake up (around midnight). Walk back to bed. Sleep until I naturally wake up around 3 a.m.; take meds then sleep until 5-5:30 a.m. when I naturally wake up again. I am so used to it that it's just me. I also have a bedside fan that blows on me all night, and we have a rain machine. When I am out of town, the fan goes with me, and I use the Rain Rain app. If people mess with my sleep, I get grumpy. I can take a nap anytime of day too and in sunlight. I love a good nap!

I adjusted my sleep habits about a year ago when peri-menopause really got worse and the hot flashes start. 1) No phones/computers at least an hour before bed 2) Nighttime dose of magnesium, plus my estrogen and progesterone 3) Sleep mask and ear plugs 4) CBD on occasion 5) If I wake in the night, no lights, no phone, no reading. I literally lie awake bored if needed

The last 5 years my sleep has really been hit or miss. I don't sleep as well as I would like. I need a ceiling fan on as I can't sleep if the air isn't moving. Getting comfortable is also difficult some nights. Sometimes I'm up multiple times and others not at all. My anxiety is worse than it used to be so I need the tv on so that I can listen to it vs just thinking about other stuff all night long.

I sleep really well, I have no trouble falling asleep and staying asleep all night. I only have to get up to use the bathroom if I'm ill. That’s pretty much me too. 99 times out of 100 i’m asleep within a min or two of turning out the light. What triggers sleep for me is to be on my side, my pillows just so, a cover over me even if it’s just a sheet in hot weather and I’m off. I do get up to wee occasionally nowadays but not always 🙂

A few years ago I started to get insomnia. I would just toss and turn for an hour or so. Now I have some melatonin in the house and will get up and take some if needed. Sometimes I just can't turn my mind off.
Also, once menopause hit, my body temperature changed for good. I used to wrap up nice and warm in heavy pajamas and fleece sheets. Now I can only wear a t-shirt nightie all winter. Every so often I am cold in the evening and try to put on heavier sleepwear. But after just 5 minutes wrapped up I overheat and need to change into my usual t-shirt. My hands and feet used to be freezing every winter, but no longer.

Since I was diagnosed with my aHUS in November I haven't slept well at night. I take Nyquil every night to get to sleep and then at some point in the middle of the night (usually around 2 a.m.) I take a Klonopin to help me get back to sleep. Thanks to the daily diuretic that I take, I get 3 or 4 times a night to go to the bathroom...and I take the diuretic in the morning, so not a timing issue. My DH has been working from home in the afternoons so I can take a short nap to keep me going. If I don't take a nap, I'm sound asleep on the couch by 6 p.m. In addition to all of that I started getting food allergies. We haven't completely pinpointed the exact thing I'm allergic too, so I have to take Benadryl sometimes twice a day depending if I accidentally eat something that I have a reaction too...so that is making me even more tired during the day. I really really just want a decent night sleep!

My sleep patterns have been all over the place, largely because my job schedule has been all over the place the last four years. I worked night shift for 2.5 years, but I realized I just didn’t want to do that anymore at my age. I worked evening shift for another 1.5 years. That was better for my sleep overall, but then my husband returned from two years in Afghanistan and I had to learn to sleep with another, snoring person again. While he was gone I invested in an adjustable Sleep Number bed. That’s helped immensely, especially since I’m another that can’t sleep on my sides without intense hip pain. I can adjust the bed so my head is up and my knees are bent. It keeps me from rolling over on my sides at night, and helps me sleep better. It doesn’t really help my snoring partner though, so we have a fan that runs all night and I wear earplugs. BUT... I have a brand new job, starting tomorrow, where I’ll be working a regular day shift for the first time in 20 years - 7am to 4pm. I am NOT a morning person, and I know the adjustment is going to be hard, but it will be nice to be home in the evenings and nights with my family, even the snorer . I wake one to two times a night to use the restroom, but I try really hard not to drink too much before bed. I will occasionally take some CBD oil if I wake up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep.

I now keep a paper and pencil beside my bed to write stuff down. It isn't always legible in the morning but at least it is out of my head!!

I haven't noticed any difference as I've gotten older. I sleep well but I have TMJ issues that bother me on and off. I've worn a bite guard for over 25 years. Currently I'm having a lot of issues with my TMJ but I don't think it is age. I'm just having trouble relaxing and am really clenching my teeth at night. We finally got a new, fairly firm mattress so after several months of nightly back pain, I'm good with that only to have the jaw pain start up. But this is a cycle that started in my 30's. I get up once at night to go to the bathroom.

I'll jump in here DH and I sleep separately because I snore really bad!! I have all of my life. I take a few drops of CBD at night and I sleep great now. For the past 2 years however, I would wake up at 2 and be up for the day. I finally just started getting up and doing paperwork. It was terrible!!

I am a night owl, living an early bird’s life. Given the opportunity, my normal sleeping hours would be 2-3am to 11am-12pm. But, alas I work in schools and have a high schooler, so I am up at 6am most days and I struggle to be asleep by midnight most nights., making me chronically tired because my sleep patterns do not match my life. I have had the sleeping patterns of a teenager since being a teen and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
When I am asleep I am dead to the world and sleep through most anything. Stress and pain also cause me to be sleepy. It is my escape; I essentially slept through the labor of both of my children. Very little keeps me awake at night.

I've always been an insomniac.
Since purchasing a weighted blanket and a wedge pillow last fall, my sleep has been better but never a full night of sleep.
My preferred sleep times are during the hours of 2:00am-3:00am and 11:00am-noon. Because I work, I usually sleep between 1:00am and 9:00am. It is never a solid sleep, it is in increments between tossing and turning, laying awake , and going to the bathroom. I have to sleep in a cold, dark, quiet room. I have to sleep with the fan blowing on me. I usually take over the counter sleep meds, and they give me about 4-5 hours of decent sleep. The other 2-3 hours of sleep are in increments and I toss and turn. I sleep with only underwear on. I sleep with earplugs.

Despite taking Ambien, it takes a good hour or so to fall asleep and I still wake at night after about 3 hours. I can go right back to sleep, but I wake often. I don't think I have ever slept an entire night without waking up. It's impossible!

I was always a night owl but lately I've been exhausted by 9-10 and I'm awake for the day by 630-730 even without the alarm - I do get up around 330 for the bathroom.
But between the night sweats, whatever the devil is going on with my feet, the hip/knee/shoulder pain, the arm/hand falling asleep - I'm a very restless sleeper and I rarely get a good chunk of undistubed sleep. I usually fall asleep pretty fast though - but the fan I've slept next to for decades ...some nights it drives me nuts and I end up flipping around in bed (head to foot of bed) so it's not blowing on me.

My sleep is all over the map. Some nights I sleep pretty well and only get up once to go to the bathroom; some nights it is more bathroom trips or having a difficult time getting comfortable with my back. Then there are a few nights I can't turn my brain off and I hardly sleep at all. I hate those nights, part of my brain will actually say "why are you thinking about this stuff, you need to go to sleep!" Then the other part of my brain goes "Lalalalalalalala! Kittens! Puppies! Lalalalalalala!"
According to DH I snore like a drunken sailor with a pack a day habit, surprising since I don't drink or smoke, LOL.
I take 1/2 a dropper of CBD before bed and my sleep noises include a cat purring, ocean, and dream sounds.

Then there are a few nights I can't turn my brain off and I hardly sleep at all. This is true for me. Only, add in knees, hips sometimes, ankle, shoulder, etc. Aches and pains everywhere. If I am sleeping well, I generally only get up once to pee. But if I’m having trouble sleeping or keep waking up, I’ll pee more often. And because I have a lot of fatigue from grief, sometimes I wake up exhausted even though I slept pretty deeply and for my normal 6 hours. I do have a fan running all the time. I like the noise and the movement of the air.

I used to have no trouble falling asleep until the death of my SO in 2016- was prescribed Ativan and took it for a year and a half. That was the only way that I wouldn't wake up having a panic attack or screaming. I got off them but I still couldn't sleep even though they were out of my system. I have been taking 2 Neurontin a day for my cervical discs for several years but supposed to take three. I added the 3rd one late at night, along with a non-narcotic muscle relaxer and now I'm good. I discussed all of this with my doctor and of course he's the one who prescribed the muscle relaxer. So it takes a combination of drugs to put me out. I also run a fan and a noise app on my phone. I go around 12:30-1 and get up around 9:30. I would love to be able to just go to bed and sleep again.
