We just moved to Belgium and have a lab whom we brought with us. And she isn’t sleeping at night! I think the poor girl has jet lag and just wants her home back. We’ve been out of our house 3 weeks ago, traveled for 2 weeks in the states, and arrived at Ramstein on Wednesday. We drove to Brussels Thursday. Emma has been GREAT! She’s a good traveler anyway and she has done really well. She’s minding, pottying when and where she is supposed to, and just being the awesome dog that she is. But she didn’t sleep last night or the night before without being plastered to me. I guess she’s had enough. We drove around hill and dale today house hunting. She rode in the backseat and was awake almost the whole day in the sunshine. Then we had dinner with some old friends we knew years ago. I’m hoping the activity, being with us all day, and the sunshine will reset her time clock. If nothing else, she’s tired! Update: we got our Hold Baggage today, which is 500 lbs that came over by air. We had my spices, kitchen stuff, winter coats, etc in there, but one of the first things unpacked was Emma’s bed. She was on it and asleep within 3 minutes of the movers leaving. After driving around house hunting today and having her bed, I’m hoping we all sleep well tonight. The past few nights she’s been sleeping again. But hopefully this feels like home! (See photo in the next post—I have no idea why I can’t post photos on this account!)

What a beautiful dog! Maybe a good long walk in the evening might help, too? Tire her out some. Good luck with your house hunting.

She is probably confused with all that is going on and being plastered up against you gives her the security that at least she knows where you are and that she won’t wake to find you’ve gone. I’m surprised that she doesn’t doze in the car. Well, unless there are numerous stops to get out and look at houses.
Can you take a down afternoon to just watch movies or something so that she can snuggle up on the couch with you and snooze? I wonder if this is what my future will be when I move to another state dragging my pup and 4 cats with me.

Dogs are much more sensitive than people give them credit for, I believe. She'll be good in a few days when everything settles down.

When we moved our dog we found she slept better in her airline box with a few pieces of our worn clothing so our scent was close to her. Being a "velcro" dog at this stage is pretty normal. She wants to make sure you can't disappear without her knowing you moved.

What a beauty Emma is. I think she just needs lots of love and reassurance. And sleeping plastered to you. 😊

I wonder if this is what my future will be when I move to another state dragging my pup and 4 cats with me. She hardly ever sleeps in the car. She likes to look at the countryside and people who pull up next to us always talk to her. She’s very social! But she did sleep a lot on Thursday when we were driving from Germany, which is probably part of why she didn’t sleep Thursday night. That and the fact that it was the 7th hotel room in 2 weeks. I’m happy to say that she did sleep last night. I took some melatonin and was pretty much out for the night and slept until 9am. I’m stiff, but feel like a new woman!

She wants to make sure you can't disappear without her knowing you moved. I did put a blanket in her crate that we’d been sleeping with all week. So it did smell like us. And yes, she frequently sleeps touching me to keep herself aware of where I am. That’s part of the problem—she tested for her advanced good canine citizen in the community 2 weeks ago and we were working together a lot. I really fostered the connection between us as she listens better. We we will take her out again today. We have a few more houses to drive by. We get our housing briefing at 8am tomorrow and then we can actually make appointments to see the houses. We crossed a few off the list yesterday and have 3 must sees, so we are doing well.

Aw bless her, she's gorgeous. I would imagine she's very disorientated and will be for a couple of weeks until she gets used to her new surrounding as well as adjusting her body clock. Glad you arrived safely and hope you soon settle in and find your ideal new home.

She’ll be adjusted pretty quickly. The pets are like people, each one handles jet lag differently. Good luck with your house hunt! Once that is knocked out the rest will slowly fall into place!

I don’t know why it never occurred to me that she would have jet lag. She sleeps a lot—she’s 7 and a lab. I just figured that with the worry of the flight, she would be awake. And then sleep when we got here. I will say that I really feel bad for our first dog. We brought Casey to S. Korea and she had to go into a kennel because they didn’t allow dogs at the hotel. We visited her every day, but I’m sad thinking she was awake at night without us. At least Emma has been with us since she got off the flight.

I have found that the older the dog, the more set they are in their patterns too. They sleep at the same time, they eat at the same time, they rest in the same places. My 8 year old seems thrown off just when it's the weekend and we are home.
So I vote time will cure the problem. Keep loving her. She is beautiful.

We are busy on the weekends when DH is home. Emma loves to be out in the yard with him, but is just exhausted by 4pm. I usually go and get her about then and make her nap. She is a working dog (reading buddy), but they can only work for 2 hours. So things are quiet with just me home during the week.

Awwww little Emma. She is so precious. What a trooper she is! Hope her sleeping gets better soon. Glad her trip was smooth. At least that is what I am assuming.

Awwww little Emma. She is so precious. What a trooper she is! Hope her sleeping gets better soon. Glad her trip was smooth. At least that is what I am assuming. Yes, her trip went very smoothly. She was the last one to check in pre-flight and the first off the plane. Being a DV had its perks! And we were the first through customs as well. (DH was the senior ranking officer on the flight.) The veterinary customs agent met us as we came through customs with water for her, had Emma’s crate unloaded first, and then let me out into the pet area alone for her to do her business off leash. (As a therapy dog, she’s trained not to pee or poop on leash.) There were several intimidating looking German Shepard’s on board, so I was grateful for that help. Im happy to report that she seemed to sleep last night and is sleeping now. We did more house hunting, so she’s tired from the car ride. I also took her out to play ball for a while, and she went on another car ride this morning when I was practicing driving the car with manual transmission. Unfortunately, I have to leave her in the room tomorrow when we have our meeting with the housing office. But it’s warm enough that I’m not comfortable leaving her in the car for several hours. And then we get our Hold Baggage! That’s 500lbs of essentials that I sent early—her bed, some toys, warm clothes, my spices, etc. So that will be exciting for both of us!

Poor baby. It's probably the scent and feel of something like the bed that makes her totally relax on her own. What a sweetie.

There is nothing like your own bed! The photo is so sweet, I had to share it and her story with DH.
