We are taking our first vacation in over 5 years next year, traveling to Jamaica. Christmas gifts this year will mainly be related to the trip. So far, everyone is getting a new carryon bag (we will also check a bag just to make carrying shampoos, soaps, contact solution, etc easier). Everyone is also getting a set of packing cubes and a quick drying towel for the beach. What else do we need (or want!)?

Plug adaptors if you need them (I don't know what the electric prongs look like there). And a converter thing if you'll need that. You won't need it if everything you need to charge has a USB connection because that usually plugs right into the plug adaptor.
That would be it for me... I always do carryon and I always use those packing cubes, and you're already getting those.
Sunscreen? An Amazon gift card to buy some new books for your Kindles? A nice notebook if anyone is into journaling?

Look into compression cubes. They take up even less space!

DD gave me a set of Bobino cord wraps last Christmas that I love, especially for traveling. Anything to keep electronics organized and charged is good for a trip. I also love my neck pillow. Marshalls is a great place to look for travel things at good prices.

Look into compression cubes. They take up even less space! We have the ones that use a vacuum- we use them for moving ds back and forth to school, but I dont expect we will have access to a vacuum there! Is there a kind that doesnt require a vacuum?

I just cleaned up and organized my travel stuff yesterday. I use two of these letter size mesh pouches for my personal items. One for "wet" stuff like tooth brush, tooth paste, shampoo, liquid type stuff. And one for "dry" like lotion, makeup, nail clippers, etc. I like that it is see-through. mesh pouchI also have a hand held luggage scale which comes in handy. Absolutely LOVE the packing cubes you mentioned. Oh if you are buying ebags brand I saw a discount code on their site good thru today. and finally several years ago I bought 3 different neon colored ribbon spools at Michaels and used that to tie around the suitcase handle so others can quickly identify that is NOT their bag. Even for the carryon bag.

You would save yourself some time to not check that bag. Travel sized liquids in your 123 bag carried in a personal item (we each used a backpack) is not difficult. Our family of 4 travel to Europe for 3 weeks with just a carry on and personal item. You are going to a beach so your clothes will be much easier to pack.
Just a thought. We take advantage of everything that has been suggested here (except we use regular cubes, not compression).
Hope you have an amazing time!!

There are some that compress by rolling tightly to expell the excess air, then when you let go the air lock doesn't allow the air to flow back in to the cube. They don't compress as tightly as the vacuum ones but they do provide some significant space savings if you have someone with strong hands to roll them. Just make sure to read the description to see how they compress so you don't accidentally order some vacuum required ones.

Are you traveling with gamers, readers, nappers, explorers, sun bathers? Look at what each person would maybe do, and maybe a gift card or gift to go along with it.
If you have a reader, maybe a gift card or a book they want. Or kindle money if they have one.
A gamer? Gift card for points to use on the travel days.
A napper? A nice travel pillow or blanket.
Explorer? A compass for hiking, or a sketch notebook, small jars for collecting goodies.
Sun bathers? Fun beach towel, sunscreen!, sun hat, sunglasses.

So far, everyone is getting a new carryon bag (we will also check a bag just to make carrying shampoos, soaps, contact solution, etc easier). Do yourself a favor and get smaller containers to put your products in. It’s a huge space saver. I am finishing up a month in Europe and didn’t bring anything full size. I’ll attach a photo of some products I use, with the smaller containers in front for comparison. After a month, none of those small containers is empty. All my little jars/bottles came from Container Store, but you can find them on Amazon as well. They are very inexpensive. I also didn’t bother to bring shampoo/cream rinse and have used the hotel products. Hasn’t been a problem at all.

Do an Amazon search and you will find lots of options. Mine our from Eagle Creek and have a double zipper. No vacuum needed.

If you are worried about taking enough of something, get the containers, fill them up and use from the container for the time duration of your trip. Then you can be confident you are taking enough. I am also quite happy to use the shampoo/condition and soap provided by the hotel. While I prefer the products I normally use the ones there are ok for short term use imo. I do put my partially used hotel soap/shampoo in my bag so they don't toss it out and put out a fresh one. They will put out a fresh one, I just move it out of the way and use the previous one so there is less waste.

Sunscreen is also a liquid issue for us. We are going to need a ton of it. Also, I was reading that hotels in Jamaica dont typically provide shampoos and conditioners. I go back and forth on the checked bag issue. Today, we are definitely checking a bag. Yesterday, we werent. It changes day to day😁

I was just going to say leave the shampoo/conditioner at home, and just use the resort/hotel stuff. But I guess they don't have that in Jamaica? I never pack stuff like that.
I took a big blanket scarf and used it on the plane like a blanket. It was easily stored, or wrapped around me when done, or shoved in my bag, and didn't take up much space. The only cord I took was my iphone charger. I used the cubes, but I didn't really find them helpful or better with space.

Since we don't really care about our clothing, other than it is clean & fits, we take along stuff that we wear and then leave them there, folded on the bed with a note stating that they require laundry and free. We only pack basics and very few shoes, as these waste space in a suitcase. Also take along containers of shampoo, sun tan lotion, etc and leave the rest behind at the hotel. We only come home with our carry on bags. So easy at the airport when you come home. PLEASE consider taking along feminine products, esp. tampons as they are expensive on the islands. Other things like tylenol, (kids version) and adult use, bandaids, hard wrapped candies, tic tacs, & other stuff is appreciated by the staff. Many otc items are very expensive. Leave them as gifts for the staff. Remember that almost everything has to be imported onto the island, so snacks will be expensive to purchase.

Flight - if you are flying more than say 4 hours - then you may want some flight comforts. If less than that, I don't bother with noise cancelling headphones or a travel pillow. Up to you. Bags - I just did three weeks in Europe with a carryon, so I may not be your best source of advice. I like the compression cubes if you are looking to save on space. www.amazon.com/Packing-Travel-Organizer-Compression-Carryon/dp/B078LJ4VNN/ref=asc_df_B078LJ4VNN/?tag=bingshoppinga-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid={creative}&hvpos={adposition}&hvnetw=o&hvrand={random}&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=e&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl={devicemodel}&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4584001419078664&psc=1I use the "roll the air out" type compression bags for larger bulkier things (sweaters, jackets, jeans) - but you shouldn't have much of that. I'd see if you can buy needed items like shampoo or sunscreen nearby. Just not worth the packing hassle. We take a sheet along to Europe because we don't like the duvet only set up, but I don't expect that would be an issue in Jamaica. I often take a water bottle, sink packs to wash out an item or two and a few clothes pins to make drying easy. I guess a lot of that depends on how long you will be gone. You also need more organizational items (cubes, etc) if you are moving locations a lot. If you are heading to one location and packing for the week, you really don't need your luggage too organized as you will unpack at your destination. If you will be out on the water, I would take some waterproof type bags for phones or other electronics. You can also use them to keep items with you that you don't want to leave behind on the beach.

I like to read on the plane, so I always make sure I have my kindle, reading glasses and contact case (in case my contacts get dry).
I always bring a nylon bag that I fold up in my in my carry on suitcase. If I see some souvenirs that I can’t live without, I can pack them in the nylon bag. I’ll check my suitcase on the trip home and use the nylon bag as my carry on.
My personal item on the plane is always a backpack. It’s so handy with all it’s compartments and holds so much stuff. Also it slips right under the airplane seat.I usually pack a small purse inside the backpack for days when I want to leave the backpack in the hotel room.
Have fun in Jamaica!

Even for the carryon bag. ANYTHING you can do to prevent someone else from picking up your bag is great! I use colorful ribbon too and try not to have black bags.
