So guys.... I never ever saw this one coming, but it turns out I’m a bit of a farmer!! How weird is that? Lol. I’m working on the world’s largest outdoor organic (legal) cannabis farm and I love it so much. Right now I’m doing my internship there and also working part time and they’ve already said they’ll give me a job offer when I’m done school (provided nothing unforeseen happens if course). I came home yesterday with a sunburn and my arms were so sticky with resin random items were sticking to me, and I didn’t even get it all washed off in the shower. What a beautiful, beautiful life!!

ACRES of weed, people. It’s hard to fathom how fantastic it is... standing in the middle of it, and it’s rows of cannabis pretty much as far as you can see.
The farm is still a commute... about 1 hr 15 min. But it’s a decent drive, for the most part. I don’t know how long I’ll end up staying there for but I can prob manage the distance until I settle into a long term position and I’ll be able to buy a house closer if I want to.

How exciting! So much happening with cannabis today. What exactly are you studying? Are you a chemist? I’m taking Commercial Cannabis Production at the only school in Canada to offer hands-on cannabis cultivation training. There’s a university that just started offering a programme but it’s completley online and I think actually cloning, trimming, harvesting the plants in person is a vital skill to learn. I’m a biochemist according to my degrees. After the harvest is done on the farm, I’m going to move to their indoor facility to learn how to do extraction of Cannabinoids from the plant material and bud, to create oils for vspes, capsules, etc.

Congratulations. I think that would be such a cool job and it's a fantastic area of study. I will be curious to see where this takes you and what aspect of it you wind up loving the best. I am eager to see what lies ahead! In the industry and also my career/life. I think there will be good opportunities... one thing I’d love to do is have my own food truck to serve edibles and THC-infused coffee, and it’s going to be called Got Baked by Ashley. So when people see you walking down the street looking fine and happy and your friend says, “hey, what’s up with you, you seem extra awesome today” you can reply back, “yeah... dude! I Got Baked by Ashley!”

Sorry, I’m confused. I wish you well. I remember you from the situation with your nephew. Hopefully things are better with your family situation now.

The programme I’m taking is a post-graduate one, so everyone has to have some type of post secondary education in a related field.

Some of the California growers have told me it is a lot like grow tomatillos. What say you? While I don’t know anything specifically about tomatillos, cannabis is still essentially just a plant and not particularly unique in a lot of ways. We most often compare growing cannabis at scale to growing tomatoes, poinsettias and potted chrysanthemums. Most cannabis grown for consumption is photoperiodc, which means it requires the length of darkness it is exposed to at night to determine whether it will remain in a vegetative growth stage or flip to producing flowers (the weed we consume is flower bud). Growing at scale is challenging, not only to simply manage the work, but to figure out proper watering patterns, how closely or well spaced the plants are kept, how to make sure there aren’t light leaks that will disrupt the growth patterns... making sure the plants have no insects or powdery mildew in them. Stuff like that becomes far more complicated when growing, say for example at 200,000 sq ft greenhouse facility vs four plants in your backyard or basement. A lot of these challenges are the same as other industrial greenhouse growers face — potted mums need a blackout period and light leaks can ruin a crop, insects and disease are a pressure for any grower — but the inability to use pretty much all pesticides, for example, makes managing cannabis a bit more difficult.
