Just wondering how long you've had your original distress inks, and how long they typically last... I've had mine for a long time and I have reinkers for most of them, but as I'm working on my Christmas cards, I have a couple that seem a little dry. I'm still able to get the coverage that I want, but I've had to apply a lot of ink from the reinkers and use more pressure than I think is normal. Like I said, I've had mine for along time, so I'm wondering if it makes more sense to invest in a couple of new ones rather than just purchase a couple more reinkers. The foam pad itself is in perfect condition on all of them which makes me think that reinkers is all that I need, but I thought I'd ask the experts!

I'm no expert, but I have had my first TH distress inks (the bigger ones, not the tiny squares) for about 10 years. They are all fine.

I believe they sell a distress ink refresher spray that is essentially just the acrylic resin base with no dye. I'd see if I could get that first. You might need to be careful to use a light touch - I'd hate to ruin a pad with too much of the refreshing spray.

I have a large collection of the minis, and some of them are disappointingly dry. My crafting pals have not had the same problem, though. I store them in the tins in a drawer in an armoire, so it's not like they're sitting out on a shelf in the sun.
I'm curious to hear what others' experiences have been.

Ink pads, much like markers, lose their solvent over time even if you don't use them. Adding more pigment + solvent + binder (reinker) ends up making the carrier medium (the felt pad in this case) caked up with unused pigment/binder. I store my ink pads in airtight storage for this reason and because I don't use them that often to help slow down any loss.
A quick search seems to say that Distress Inks are water based, so a bit of extra moisture might be all you need. On the other hand, if your pad is gummed up with dried acrylic resin, then you might have to wash it out completely with a solvent to restore the pad which is probably more work than most people are willing to put up with.

Thanks everyone! I actually do have the ink refresher so I've been giving the two pads I'm having trouble with a spritz every here and there as well as adding more ink for the one pad that I have the reinker for. I ended up buying the reinkers for these two pads online because the pads themselves appear to be in perfect condition They are old so it may just be that they've seen their day and it's time to buy a replacement! It also could be that I'm trying to get a heavier application on paper that isn't necessarily meant for these inks...

I know everyone raves about that refresher but my pads got ruined. Then I go over to SplitCoastStampers and some of the girls were talking about the same issue. I think the refresher is probably good for normal formulations but hardly any inks are normal formulations anymore. Lindsay (Frugal Crafter) makes her own ink refresher. I made some and it works great. I use it on my cheap inks. I won't dare touch my specialty. thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.com/tag/recipe-for-ink-refresher/I do buy reinkers. I love my reinkers more than my ink pads. I am that girl who has more reinkers than ink pads, lol. I do so much with them like make my own sprays, paints, alcohol inks, etc.. If your ink pads are old just get a new one. If you don't use reinkers for other things then just get a new pad. I don't like recommending that because I am a green girl. I do understand that keeping useless reinkers in your home just to ink up a pad that might have seen it's day is not very green either. Is it your red pad or brown pad? If it's a red pad let Ranger know because the old formulations are defective and they are replacing the pads. One of the brown pads has some issues too. I remember talk over at SplitCoast Stampers of the red pads showing issues a few years of their release. Ranger realized the pads had that issue and were replacing. Apparently it happened to Stampin Up too.

@amayalylac, I hadn't heard about the red ink pads having issues, but the ones that are dry for me are Chipped Sapphire and Mermaid Lagoon. The re-inkers that I use are definitely my distress ones, and actually I use them mostly to ink up the pads but for some reason I didn't have the reinker for Mermaid Lagoon. Weird because when I bought the pad, I bought the reinker to go along with it. I'm going to replace both ink pads because when I turned them over and looked at the year, one is from 2004 and the other is from 2012! They definitely get used, but they certainly sit for long periods of time as well so maybe it's just time! Trouble is that I have to order them online and I've gotten into a bit of a groove working on my Christmas cards so it looks like they will get put on the back burner again! So my next question is: Does anyone have a code for SSS? I know there are all kinds of codes floating around for ad ons with an order, but I need a straight $5 off!

streetscrapper That sucks it's the blue ones. Mermaid Lagoon is my favorite. I haven't heard any issues on the blue pads. I hope your news pads are perfect.

@amayalylac I had to order them from Amazon! Paid twice as much as I should have, but they'll be here today and I needed them ASAP! Guess I should have paid more attention... maybe I should check my others now too because I suspect that most of them are pretty old!
