I agree with this, although I still don't understand the hatred towards AB right now. What more were they planning before they severed ties with him? I think people were so tickled with the personalized can they made just for him, and they were going to supply him with a 'years supply' of those. Everyone wanted to buy them, but they were only going to produce them for Carson - and then they said - NOPE ... were not going to do that... They (Busch Light) also play heavily into the social media of the younger people in the state, especially Iowa State students and more recent grads. It's a huge deal to get re-Tweeted by Busch. It's also a big deal to 'drink out' a stadium or event of Busch beer... When Iowa State went to the Bowl Game in Memphis a couple years ago, they drank the stadium and every bar in Memphis out of Busch Light beer. When they went to the Bowl Game in San Antonio last year, it was a big deal that they were ready for the Iowa State fans, and yep - they drank the stadium out of Busch Light before the game even started... And they send the "Busch Light Guy" to the bowl games, and he was even at the Iowa-Iowa State game, tailgating with the kids. So it's kind of like all these younger people are SO positive on the Busch Light brand, and Busch responds big time to them... and then when AB says, way too quickly, "We don't want anything to do with your newest hero that united the entire state with love.... everybody reacted with a great big F U AB!Recently, another beer brand had a commercial that no corn syrup was used to brew their beer, and Busch responded big time that they support midwest Corn farmers... and you are seeing some combines wrapped with Busch Light decals (done by a local distributor) Also, everyone calls Busch Light "Busch Latte" - so they changed up their can and are selling 30 racks as "Busch Latte - Brewed for America's Heartland" So Busch Light has an almost cult-like status here... and poof... just like that ... they shot that down the tubes by so quickly dropping Carson without any benefit of doubt.

Thanks iowgirl This article from last summer helps describe Iowa's love affair with Busch Light and hence the blow back.

I was not at all familiar with this story - but have to say I think AB was shortsighted in cutting ties. I think that in an attempt to "play safe" they end up looking flat footed. I also think the newspaper was ridiculous in posting 7 year old tweets of a sophomore in high school - talk about irrelevant. Carson sounds like a stand up guy - and I wish him success and a much better beer.

As an Iowan, here is my opinion, and why I am upset with the DMR. They are an Iowa paper. From our capital. They had an opportunity to support something that was good for our state, our economy, our reputation, and especially our children's hospital in Iowa City. Instead, they chose to dig up nonsense on Carson King just to cause drama and raise a stink! Well they accomplished that alright. Except the stink is now aimed at them instead of him. I will not support this paper in any way ever again. As for the reporter, he was fired. But, shouldn't the editor, the owner, and all the other higher ups be held accountable? He didn't investigate, and publish, that info on his own. He had to have clearance and approval. Again, another reason to stop support of this paper. AB..well, thankfully they have held to their pledge to match funds. But, their abrupt "dropping" of this man and this situation seemed a bit too quick. And unfortunately for them, they were trying to save their ass, and instead, made it worse. I don't feel bad for them at all. And, my support for them won't change, I didn't support them anyway. Never a Busch Light drinker and never will be! LOL!

Thanks! I am an ISU grad but the love affair with Busch Lite clearly wasn't a thing then. lol None of the people that I have seen posting are ISU grads (and most live in NW Iowa, not near Ames), but most of the ones who are so upset with AB are young, even if not college students. That helps me to understand when people say "Busch Latte"

My husband still reminisces about kegs outside on the deck at the Union for FAC .. lol My kids are like ... no Dad. no kegs at the Union... but we still do FAC! LOL They are all done and graduated, but just finished the last one there recently - so I'm still kind of in the loop.. kinda ..

Like a couple of others, I am right in the middle. I live in Iowa, and have most of my life (born here too). I have a more "direct" connection to all of this though. My child is a patient at the UofI Children's Hospital. She sees several specialists there and goes there every 4 weeks for a life-saving infusion. She will benefit (however indirectly) from what Carson King gives. Up until a couple of days ago, it was fun watching all of the hoop-la! The DMR "reporter" is no longer with the register. They didn't really specify if he resigned or if they fired him. AB pulling back has added a new twist, Craft Beer breweries from all over the state are jumping in and donating a percentage from their sales to the cause. I have an opinion about it all but I'll spare you all!

His running total for the donation (with matching funds from AB and Venmo counted in) is over 1.9 MILLION right now. Isn't that amazing! I predict the number goes up quite a bit after this weekend! As Mel mentioned, craft breweries are getting involved and a lot of local places around me are having specials this weekend on food, and will make donations from that....

A lot of the pushback is because they cherrypicked the tweets from 8 years ago but didn’t include the ones as an adult speaking out against racism. Or his senior yearbook quote about being the change you want to see in the world. Or the fact that he has went on a mission trip. Instead they choose the ones that would create sensationalism. Media at its finest. 🙄
Then they publish a non apology last night but still refer to his tweets from 8 years ago as “disturbing and highly inappropriate” but then proceed to refer to the tweets from their reporter (which were far worse and more recent) as “questionable” tweets.
The Register really needs to take some classes on PR because they just keep digging a bigger hole for themselves.

As a black graduate from the University of Iowa, I think this is one of those times white people confuse me.
I support him 100%. I also work with tenth graders. And the stories I could tell...

This has been an interesting story to follow here in central Iowa. It was the one good thing coming out of the Iowa-ISU game, especially after the reports of the Iowa marching band being assaulted, harassed, etc. on their way out of the stadium (that's been a different sort of interesting story to follow, especially as a former college band member). But when the DMR decided to add that little tidbit to the end of the article about his old tweets (and then ask AB for a comment about them before the story ever broke...that way they could deny that they "informed" AB about the tweets...) it turned ugly.
The DMR still refuses to apologize The reporter did try to apologize, but ended up trying to make himself the victim and then tried to blame it on right-wing ideologies. Sorry buddy, you managed to upset every kind of person in Iowa--Cyclones, Hawkeyes, Liberals, Conservatives, old, young, males, females, etc.

That is true, but Iowans are VERY upset with Busch for severing any other ties that they had with Carson King. I'm not sure what exactly that means, or what parts of their "deal" were scrapped after the tweets were found. AB is still standing behind their pledge to match funds until the end of the month. When this first went down, they were going to match their pledge up to the point they 'severed ties' - but now they have gone back and honored their pledge to match until Monday at 12:59. I think what has pretty much all of Iowa really pissed is how they (AB) immediately "cut ties" - they released this statement before the DSM Register even published it. Carson did give a press conference about it before the DSM R published, because they did give him a heads up. BUT... several people have examined the time line and it really appears that someone gave AB the info before Carson was notified ... meaning the journalist (Aaron Calvin) or his editor at the DSM R leaked the info to AB... which is super shitty. yeah but, I can’t blame Anheuser-Busch For not wanting to add their alcohol to someone prone to doing stupid things or outrageous . Can’t blame them for not wanting to hold that bag of accountability The thing is this kid is SUPER accountable. Read any of his (current) tweets and press releases. Since the minute this thing began, I have been SO impressed by his maturity over the entire situation. If you wanted to have anyone represent your brand - this kid is THE ONE. He quoted something from Tosh.0 when he was 16 - and had completely forgot about it. He didn't try to say "I was 16 and it was a quote from the show" ... he owned up to it ... And the kicker in this ... AB was a commercial sponsor of the Tosh.0 show! yea... really. They sponsored it! 1.) People who send money to a stranger so that they can buy beer are, to me, a bubble left of plumb and their judgement is suspect. The sign was shown on ESPN Game Day... a few people donated a little money .. he saw the money come in and tweeted that he would only keep enough for 1 rack, and the rest would be donated to the University of Iowa Children's Hospital* ... that is when the real money started pouring in... * A little info on his charity donation: Carson Kind is a CYCLONEHe graduated from Iowa State University. He has some big student loans to pay off ... but yet he never hesitated to give to the UNIVERSITY OF IOWA Children's Hospital. This all took place during the Iowa-Iowa State game... this is a HUGE rivalry. I mean HUGE. He was a Cyclone grad, who chose the U of I's Children's hospital to give the money to. This might not mean much if you aren't from Iowa and don't grasp the magnitude of his generosity. Iowa State supports a Children's hospital in Des Moines (Blank Children's) .. But by choosing the U of I hospital - it brought the state together in making this kid and what he did a very big deal..> So when the DSM R reporter dug this up - people are P I S S E D in a HUGE way. ^^^^ THIS! Born and raised Iowan here. My step daughter went to Iowa state. My dad retired from the university of Iowa hospital. This story has been huge here. Iowans are mad as hell at what Busch and the DM register did. So much so that many Oktoberfest festivals in Iowa are boycotting Busch and refusing to serve their beer. This kid from Iowa state has raised over 2 million dollars for the children’s hospital. He has handled this with so much grace for such a young adult.

If anyone is still reading here ... The donations ended yesterday, and he ended up with 2.95 MILLION dollars to donate to the Children's Hospital at the University of Iowa ... just from asking for some free beer. This kid has been a class act all the way. He hasn't always been treated the best, but his responses have been nothing but mature and gracious. We need a whole lot more Carson King's in this world!

Boy o boy am I glad there is no record of all the stupid shit I've likely done/said. i know nothing of this story.... and it sounds pretty unfortunate that this kid got some quick notoriety, actually tried to do something *good* with it instead of trying to be the next bachelor or get on big brother and it has blown up like this. very painful and very public lesson to learn. but i will second malibou and say i am very grateful the stupid shit i said when i was a stupid kid (and i was stupid, not mean spirited, not malicious) can be brought back up and thrown out there for total strangers to judge me as a person on.

I'm thankful that technology was not readily available when I was a teen/young adult.
I made some assholian commemts in my high school years. They were very much predicated on ignorance on my part, but they were there. I am completely opposite now. I can't imagine being judged on my stupidity years later.
