Knowing that DD would struggle a great deal with never having privacy - she is both anxious and an introvert - we chose to put her in an on-campus apartment. She shares the apartment with another girl but has her own room. I have to say I’m shocked at what you’re paying for the dorm, though - unless I’m misunderstanding you, it’s quite a bit more than we pay monthly for her apartment. What @merge said! DS has never lived in a dorm. We put him in off campus apartments, the current one owned by the college. He gets his own room and bathroom while sharing the living room, kitchen, and laundry with his ONE roommate. His rent is $685/month; there’s no way he comes close to another $1000 per month for food! I would suggest that you tell her that she needs to get through this uncomfortable year, using the solutions already suggested for dealing with her current roommate. Then, she can move into an apartment, hopefully with a different roommate with whom she gets along better.

I feel your DD's pain. I didn't go away to college because there is absolutely no way I could live in a tiny room with another person. I don's have any suggestions, but I do understand how she feels.

They are required to live in the dorms for a year. The $1700 includes her dining $ (lowest level). The dining is almost as much as the dorm. It’s a racket! She will definitely be moving into an apt next year. My DS was a transfer student so he never lived in the dorms just an apt and it’s been so much cheaper. All in for his living expenses and food it’s about $1000 a month. And this is a state school. I will look into a tent and headphones for sure. DH and I are agreement there will be no dropping out. He was in the Navy so he knows all about living in small places with people, says she just needs to deal.

talk to the RA.. talk to the housing people. headphones, masks, white noise. find a place in the library to hide. or somewhere else. To be clear, when I hit "like" on this I'm assuming that the student is doing the above, not mom.
