I've posted some of our family trip videos here before, though I'm not sure if I've shared all of them. Anyway, I just posted a new one to Youtube, and thought I would share. In August we visited South Africa, plus did a stopover in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe along the way. It was a wonderful trip, and they are destinations I would absolutely recommend! Hope you enjoy.

Thanks for sharing - I'm another fan of your family vacation videos! DD and I watched this together - she was in Cape Town and just outside Kruger NP in January.

I love your vacation videos and especially love seeing how much your son and daughter enjoy themselves. I think this video is the best you've ever done. You've become a real professional. Just wonderful. Thank you for sharing with us.

Thanks for sharing. May I ask if you used a travel agency? If so, who did you use? We are in the planning process for next year - and this exactly what we are looking for.
Any tips, references, etc - greatly appreciated.

Just wonderful. Thank you for sharing with us. Thank you! I have probably made close to a dozen trip videos now, and I definitely learn from each one and refine the process a little further each time.

If you have any specific questions, I'm happy to help!

Fantastic. I enjoyed it very much. Feel free to take more trips so I can take notes. If I had more time and more money, I would do nothing BUT take trips and make videos from them! LOL. Luckily we do always have a couple of future trips in the hopper. Next up: Brazil!

Luckily we do always have a couple of future trips in the hopper. Next up: Brazil! So without sounding stalker-ish, I have not ever seen your posts about previous trips so I went and looked at your other post that you shared your video mainly so I could see if you answered some questions so you wouldn't have to repeat the info (and you did). I think one of your replies you talked about how you used to scrapbook your trips and it evolved from there. And that really clicked for me as I gave up scrapbooking trips. The process was just too time consuming for this slow scrapper. A few years ago my daughter brought her Go-Pro to Hawaii and made a great video and that planted a seed for me. Last year I did a video of our Greece trip, but it was 90% stills and 10% video. And this year I went with the intention of putting together a video of our France/Switzerland trip. And knowing I was doing it changed what I video'd. So I do have a video I like, but I think your work has encouraged me to switch out the music. I used some stock iMovie music and it's fine for the first minute, but just keeps repeating. I also feel like I'm missing some detail that your voiceover provides. But I hate my voice (yours is lovely, btw), so not sure how I'll improve that. Anyway, all of this to say that you've really inspired me and given me much to think about. We have 3 trips next year so hopefully I can work towards improving the video each time, but you have really set the bar high!

We have 3 trips next year so hopefully I can work towards improving the video each time, but you have really set the bar high! Thank you! I have probably made about a dozen trip videos now. The first few were photo slideshows, and then evolved into video set to music without any real audio, to my movies now that tend to either have audio or voiceover. I learn from each one, and always wind up vowing to do something differently next time! I’ve also really refined what I film in the first place. When I started out, I filmed too much of some things and not enough of other things. Now, I’m much better at knowing what I do and don’t need, and I’m more efficient at getting it. Lots of funny things happen off-camera that I wish I’d captured, but I get enough to make a movie from. It’s not ‘everything’ that happened but it’s enough to get a flavour of it all. Finding good music can be a struggle for sure. I’ve just started using Epidemic Sound for a lot of my music - it’s guaranteed copyright free, but you do need to be an active subscriber when you post to YouTube (it’s $15/month but I’m only active during the months when I post and then I cancel!)

I've been using Epidemic Sound! Picking music can take sooo long. I've collected a pretty good list, but still, sometimes nothing on there seems *quite* right.

I've been using my phone on a gimbal stabilizer and it works pretty well (generally... gimbal needs re-calibrating now, I think). I also have a Canon 60D that I usually only use for still photos. I did try getting some video with it on our Korea trip, but I ended up not using any of the footage since it was too shaky. I've been wondering if I should get a gimbal for that (would need a different one from the phone gimbal) or maybe get another smaller camera. How do you film with your Canon 77D?

HelenaJole Very carefully! LOL. I used to have a 70D, same camera line as the 60D, and had difficulty filming with it, due to the weight. The 77D has the same chip as the 70D, but is a step 'down' the Canon line - it's got a plastic body instead of metal, and is smaller. Which is why I chose it: it's much easier for me to hold steady for video work. It is still difficult to film with a heavy lens, though. I sometimes use the Warp Stabilizer effect to steady the footage when processing it. (Sometimes this works well and sometimes it makes the footage look even worse, though.) For me, a dSLR gimbal would be too cumbersome to manage while on a family trip. I do sometimes think about trying a mirrorless camera, or even a compact, the next time I am in the market for a new camera.
