My 2 year old is obsessed with trains. Big Boy, the largest still operational steam train, is coming this week to a town 2 hours away from here. On one day, it's arriving to the station at one time, and departing 30 minutes later. So you actually get to see it moving. On the following day, it's stationed at another station in the same town for 6 hours so you can look at it and walk around it, but it doesn't move. We can't go to both days. Grandma lives in said town so there are other things we can do on a trip down and back. 2 city parks in our own town have old, non-operational steam car engines as part of the park that you can go in and on. Has anyone been to see Big Boy? Is it more worth it to see it moving, or to get to admire it for as long as you want? Update! We went today, the day it was moving. The tracks between here and the town it stopped in parallel the freeway for a long time so we actually timed it such that we could “chase” the train. We would stop and watch it, then go on ahead and then stop again. We ended at the depot where it was stopping. Lots of people did the “chase” thing. It was super fun. And two year old was sooooo happy.

I got to see it at one of the 30 minute stops. It was very cool! There were TONS of people there to see it, and I live in a fairly rural area. So if you live in a larger populated area - the crowds might be worse. It was about 20 minutes late coming in, but it stayed the full amount of time it was supposed too.
The longer stop might give you a little more time to actually look at the train up close.
It was so impressive to see it pull in, and hear the steam whistle blow (SO LOUD) and then to see it start up again.

Yes and it was cool. Can you go the longer day and then meet it at the track to watch it go by on the other day?
It's an annual tradition around here (well not this year because some lady got hit last year and they didn't run it) to go to the different crossings and watch it go by. People put pennies on the track (which in pretty sure is illegal) and then stand back and wait for hit to come.
The sound it makes is so worth it
There is probably a schedule of when it goes by different areas and it is typically within 5 min of that timeframes

Would love to see that sometime. Have seen it on TV shows. The track is always lined with LOTS of people. Expect a crowd.

No, but I think my parents are going to go see it this weekend. I think it’s kinda cool.

@missjen off topic, but how is your friends daughter that was taken to Houston? I have been thinking of her and wanted to ask for an update.

Houston ruled out a bunch more things and submitted her to the Unknown Disease Network, but they weren’t able to diagnose her either. She coded one time while she was there but was otherwise stable. They transferred her back to Phoenix last weekend so I get to see her today. 🥰. She coded when she got here so she’s still in ICU but all three hospitals have said at some point they will just send her home with alarms and CPR training for her parents because flu and RSV season is coming and they think that would be worse for her to stay and be exposed to that since all they can do at this point is just watch her.

well, crap! I almost wish I hadn't seen this post, to tell you the truth. It's going to be in Casa Grande (where we live) overnight, but NO public access!! poop!! Other than that, we'd have to drive at least 2-4 hours to even get a chance to see it, and it's all on weekdays!! I don't think I can afford to take the time off to do it.
I hope you can work it out so you guys can go see it- it should be a great experience!!
My DH has seen one of them on display when he was a kid, and it would be great to see it actually in action, but Yuma (or even Gila Bend) is way too far away for us to drive for a chance to see it-- and that 'weekday' thing just makes it SUCK- unfortunately.

Hopefully it does its frontier days runs again this year, then you could come west and see it

I would think moving would be the best. HOWEVER at 2 your DS will not remember, so up close for a longer time might well be better for pictures, more up close and personal for him. Either way, enjoy!

nope- Yuma, AZ. it's going to be working its way thru Arizona next week, and will be departing from Tucson AT 7 AM on Saturday to make its way down into Texas. That's the only time we could see it without me having to take off work.

Lucky me. It will be a 2 hour drive (each way) but we can go see it on a Sunday.

YES- GO! He will remember it and a great family memory. We went to see the 4014 when it first arrived in Cheyenne for the renovation. Haven't seen it in action, but will! We stayed at a cheesy hotel with a shallow swimming pool during the Depot Days at Cheyenne and the kids loved it!

Yeah the Arizona schedule sucks for us too. But I have in mind this weekend to try to see where the tracks actually are. It has to go from Yuma to Tucson. Surely there is a track somewhere between those two places that we can just go observe at the right time, even if it’s not stopping.

My husband did and I think a 2 year old obsessed with trains would love seeing Big Boy! It will probably be very crowded!

We saw it when it came to UT for the Golden Spike Celebration. We didn't tour it, just went to one of the whistle stops. It was really cool. Lots of little kids were there. I think you should go to at least one of the events.

Saw the Big Boy today, and yes Miss Jen, your son will love it. We drove to Victorville and I also got a quick glimpse of it coming up the Cajon Pass. I remember when it was at the fairgrounds in Pomona. It wasn't as crowded as I expected, pretty reasonable. Only had 2 policemen there. Many kids. Saw it arrive and take off again. Was tempted to follow to Barstow, but didn't. I'd post pics if I could figure out how. Got there about 1/2 hr early. And to answer your question, I would have to see it moving, hearing the whistle and seeing the steam is all part of the experience.

how cool!! I'm glad you guys had a great time, and got to follow along with it for a while! My DH was waiting for it yesterday so he could see it go past as it was coming into town... but it ended up being almost 2 hours late, and he couldn't wait for it!! After I left work, I drove directly to where it was parked for the night-- I managed to get a few decent pics. (it looks like your cutie got a LOT closer than they'd let us!) My DH didn't get a chance to see it at all, so we're going to head to Tucson insanely early on Saturday to see it leave.

I’m glad we didn’t head to CG last night because of the delay. The website library lady posted shows where it is in real-time and they tweet frequently. That’s how we were able to follow it so well.

yeah; he didn't know about the delay till after he had his spot along the tracks staked out, and he started talking to a couple other people. Train watchers- who knew they were a thing? lol. I told him he should go to Tucson tomorrow to see it while it's on display. Then we can drive down on Saturday to see it leave. Not sure if he will or not, but I think he should- it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

At one stop we had to crawl under barbed wire and these sweet men helped me get my kids under and then lickety-split we’d all run back to our cars and go again. A caravan followed them on the frontage road too. Everyone was either a little boy like mine (and their parents), or 50+ year old men 😂 I told Matthew that will be Nathaniel in 50 years 😂

He makes his living as a C.P.A., but he is a train engineer at heart. The train goes through a town 30 minutes from our lake house in November, so I think I'll ask my brother and his wife to come over for the weekend and see the train.
