I always do my nails myself, but have been very lazy about it this past year. So if you do your nails, do you have any tips for making your manicure/pedicure last? I have store credit from Ulta, and am ready to spend some money on my nail supplies.
Also, what is on your nails? I guess I have to stop pretending it's still summer and pull out my fall colors!

I finally found a combo that lasts pretty well on my nails (which never hold on to anything) - and both the base coat and the brand of nail polish that worked for me are discontinued. Grrrrrrrr. I guess I still have the top coat.

Tips for putting polish on - make sure they’re free of dirt, oil etc by wiping with remover first. Use a decent base coat to help adhesion. Try and paint with just a few strokes- 3 if possible. Initially place the brush away from the cuticle so the polish doesn’t flood. Tip the free edge. Let each coat fully dry. Use a decent polish like Orly or OPI.

I sand the bottom of my feet and heels, every time I shower.
I use flexitol heel balm, which I learned about here on this message board on a past thread.

The CND Vinylux top coat truly does wear better than other top coats — my manis always last longer with it. I use it with any polish, but I do like the same line polishes in addition to OPI the best.

I used to go with a french mani/pedi...... Now I just do pale pink on both......... I got this AMAZING kit from Zoya (I'll check the name) with base coat, top coat, drying drops and nail polish remover. You just buy the color you want in addition (I got a sheer pink). It literally takes 2 minutes to do my nails and dries instantly, AND it lasts for up to 2 weeks! Excellent deal..........

I would do my nails more if the polish lasted longer. I bought kitchen gloves today to wear when I clean. I am so bad about that!

I alternate Nailtiques Formula 2 and OPI base coat- the Nailtiques strengthens them. I usually do 2 manicures a month. I also use either Zoya, OPI, or China Glaze polishes. I do have one a england polish and it's good, too. I do the first coat and tip my nails, then the second coat. I let them dry forever. Then I usually use Zoya Sparkle Gloss- it does add a little sparkle, so it will alter a creme polish look. If I go straight to a top coat- like Seche Vite or SH Gel- mine will only last about a week. If I do the Sparkle Gloss, then the top coat I can get 2 weeks out of it. I may have to touch up a couple of times. My nails are long and rarely break, but I did break a thumbnail yesterday. It was time to cut them down a little anyway! Oh, and I put on Zoya Foster- it's a pretty brown.

It helps with at-home manicures lasting longer! The Zoya polish color is called Bela.
(Just saw that I bought it back in July and it was the mini bottles and it's STILL lasting!!!!!!!! I'd buy it again, for sure!!)

Thanks so much! That color is pretty! I have such a hard time with light shades of pink and white shades. It always looks streaky on me, yet it looks great on my daughter. I use three coats and it's still not enough with light shades. But I haven't tried Zoya for light colors (although I love Zoya, I have several hot pink/darker shades).

water is a killer of manicures. If you use gloves when you do dishes, it will help immensely. The 3 months we didn't have a kitchen, so no dishes, my nails were so healthy I actually had to cut them down multiple times because they got so long. Now that we're back with a kitchen, I can't get them all the same length due to breakage from soap and water damage.

Constantly having your nails wet/dry/wet/dry will cause flaking of the layers too.

I’ve started doing my own gel manicures at home and I’m in love. I can get a full two weeks out of them and they look really great, if I do say so myself. I did have to re-do one of my pointer fingers during that time but it was so much easier doing one nail as opposed to going to the salon to get a full manicure. I was also tired of spending the time and 50+ dollars to have them professionally done. I used this blog post as inspiration for the tools I needed and spent about $100 getting all of the supplies, which pays for itself after about 3 manicures. asliceofstyle.com/gel-nails-tutorial/

I do my own dip nails from the company revel. Last weeks and once you get the hang of it, pretty easy. The company is fabulous and really supports its customers.
I used to do gel and that’s also the way to go to keep your mani staying. Just pay close attention to not getting the base coat on your cuticles or the gel will lift over time.

I love using incoco or color street nail wraps. Color street is through consultants but you can get incoco at ultra or Walmart- just not as many choices. I love the designs and they last a couple of weeks. I usually take them off because of growth not wear. I get compliments on my nails often. Much cheaper than going to a salon.

I don't have many suggestions that hasn't already been mentioned. But... Seche Vite top coat is *amazing*. Dry nails in 5 minutes, super shiny, and long lasting. It does get thick quicker than others, but the hassle is totally worth it to me. Not even that much of a hassle, use a few drops of nail polish thinner or Seche Vite thinner and there ya go! Side note- do NOT use nail polish remover as a nail polish thinner. It will work short term but then will break down your polish.

Where can you buy them? Thanks for the tips! Ulta has nail polish thinner, I think Ulta does also. You can also get some on Amazon. A bottle will last you yearssssssss since you only need a few drops. It will refresh any nail polish that has gotten thick and goopy, so no need to toss your favorite polish Just add a couple drops, roll the bottle between your hands (don't shake polish, makes bubbles in your manicure more probable), then check the consistency. If it is still thicker than you'd like, add a few more drops. Easy!

It's not streaky at all, and depending on how much coverage you want, I use between 1-3 coats. One coat is a very slight sheer pink. 2 coats look really neat. 3 coats are a more definitive pink color. The GREAT thing is that it dries instantly and shines!
