I can’t imagine anybody loving salt or cod. They are as dry as dirt, and I would hate to have him as a professor! BUT the info in those books? Mind blowing. its probably just me but I’m having a hard time tracking this book. I found “ In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex” super interesting (and obviously historical) Nope not you. They are really terrible books just to sit down and read. I was quite stabby through both of them.

I would also get my hands on The Dummies Guide to Modern History or 21st Century. It helps to have the timeline handy to put whatever you read in perspective. What a great point! That would certainly be helpful. I'd say I know some stuff about history from a 'history of design' sense, since I'm interested in fashion / architecture / antiques / collectibles, but 'history' as in 'historical events' and/or 'politics' not so much. I'm similar in that I know some military history through my dad and some of his books, some sociological stuff through college getting me interested in it, and a fair amount of the scientific stuff since I've just always been interested. It's the tying together of all of it where I'm really lacking, and then of course, specific rabbit holes that you can always wander into! I think Robert Caro's series of books about the life of Lyndon Baines Johnson is a great way to learn about American history It's funny you should mention this, because I just solidified my decision to ask you guys for suggestions after returning from chaperoning the 5th grade field trip to the LBJ museum! Nope not you. They are really terrible books just to sit down and read. I was quite stabby through both of them. I read Salt a few years back, and agree! But it was certainly interesting information! Thank you all for your suggestions, and please keep it going even though I now have enough suggestions to cover the rest of my life, lol. I have read some of these but not most, and I'm glad this is helpful to others, too!

I haven't read it yet, but I have Robert Meacham's The Soul of America on my reading list.
