Has anyone done this? I'm going away for a long weekend in December, traveling alone. I was looking at experiences on AirBNB and found a photographer who offers a great deal on a photo session, all outdoors, for single travelers and couples. I looked at his reviews and his website and everything is great, so I'm really considering booking a session. It would take an hour, 90 minutes tops out of my day and I'd have some awesome photos about a week later - he says he'll send a link to at least 50 edited photos! That's so many!! It's cheap too so if he didn't have reviews, a website, and social media I'd think it was too good to be true. As much as I think it'd be a fun experience and a cool memory to take home with me (and to scrap ) I can't help but feel like maybe it's a little vain. Would I seem like I'm full of myself to book a solo shoot? I know people do it all the time but it isn't something I've ever considered for myself before, so I guess that's why I'm having reservations. I don't really have any photos of myself that aren't selfies with my cat haha so I think it would be nice to have some professional ones! Thoughts?

I don't think you should even bother worrying whether it's vain or not. It's for you and if it makes you happy, you should do it! As the official photographer of our family, I tend to forget that I need to get in the photos myself or take selfies, etc ... I think it's great that you can get some lovely photos taken of you at a price that you're happy with. Go for it!

I'm always the one behind the camera so if I ran across a cool service like this, I'd totally do it! Go for it.

I think it is a great idea! Do it!
The statement you made about only having cat selfies means its time for some professional photos of yourself!

I wouldn't hesitate to do it and I truly wish I'd have thought of something like this for myself when I did my solo trip of Poland and Germany two years ago. As a former pro photographer from back in the film days, I am the one always behind the camera-and I am very uncomfortable in front of it. Not to mention I don't even take selfies because I can't figure out how to use my Iphone camera comfortably-I always travel with a Nikon SDLR. So I truly don't have many photos of myself. When I did that trip above I'd offer to take people's photos that I'd see together (couples that were traveling with just 2 people) and then ask them to return the favor with my camera for a photo of myself. I only did it a few times.
All that to say-I think it's an incredible idea! Vain? Heck no! I don't see that at all! If you are thinking that do you think that everyone who pays for professional photos is vain? See? It's not vanity. It's wanting great photos of yourself in a unique setting that you can treasure and keep. What in the world could be wrong with that? Absolutely nothing.
I say go for it! And thanks so much for the idea. I'll keep it in my mind next time I take a trip. I hope your photos of you on your upcoming trip come out just as you wish-Incredible!

I haven't done a professional photo shoot, but I have asked someone to take my photo with my camera.
When I was on a solo road trip last year, and was at the beach, I'd exchange photo taking with whomever I asked to take my photo, or they asked me. One turned into a mini photo shoot. I had written my name and the year in the sand and asked a young couple to take my photo with my camera and they said we should write our names too, so I waited while they did that and took their photo. Then the scrapbooker in me said "get on him piggyback and they did that. Then we were on the pier at the same time and exchanged photos taking there too.
If I ask someone to take my photo with my camera, I always ask them would you like me to take a photo of you with your phone or camera?

I mean has anyone ever regretted getting photos done?

We just did an Airbnb photoshoot but I was with my husband. I would totally do it solo too!!! I haven’t gotten the photos back yet since it was just last week in Italy. But it’ll be so nice to have a few photos of us that aren’t arms length selfies! It was a bit weird at first following his direction and what he was trying to capture but got easier as we went. He had two time slots to choose from, sunrise and sunset. I chose sunrise and the streets were mostly empty.

Thank you everyone!! I'm convinced - it needs to happen. I don't have a very high self esteem, which is probably why I was second guessing the idea, but I think that it might be a great way to boost my confidence. I'll be in Toronto (anyone know any scrappy stores there, btw? I won't have a car) so there's a good chance it'll be snowy, so that combined with Christmas things around the city, I think it'll be a gorgeous setting. Though it's a very pretty city in the summer, too! birukitty, I am also a photographer and have a Nikon DSLR! I much prefer to be behind the lens but I also don't want to get older and wonder why I don't have many photos of myself in my 20s. I'm trying to get better about seeing myself in photos which is probably why I pose with my cat, lol.

I think it is a great idea! What a fun way to document you, and your trip. I’d love to have a sort of photo journalist with me for a session while I was on vacation!

I'd do it!!! You won't regret it. Sure, I might feel a bit silly during the shoot, but I know I'd be so glad I did it later on when looking back at the pictures and the scrapbook of the trip.

I’m glad you decided to do it. I think it’s great. For years when visiting Hawaii, I used to dream of living there and providing that service for tourists. Of course, that was before iPhones, but these still a difference in professional pics with good lenses by someone who knows what they’re doing, and knows the best spots to get the shot.
I wish I had the health to do something like that now. What a wonderful life.

I’d totally do it! My DH and I take our tripod and take “selfies” as our vacation photos. It started on our honeymoon when no one was around to snap pics of us together. Most times, we wouldn’t have pics of us if we didn’t take them with the tripod.
I don’t feel like it’s vain at all. You’d have great memories of your trip that you wouldn’t have otherwise. Do it!

Hi all! I wanted to come back and revive this thread for a moment to say I DID IT!
The shoot was on Friday, the weather was gorgeous and I should have the photos in my email by Wednesday or so, he said to give him 7 days but his turnaround lately has been 5. But it was a great experience and I'm happy I did it!

kiera , I just saw this post again, and wanted to see if you were happy with your results? I'd love to see one, if you feel comfortable sharing. I'm happy to hear that you did it! He sent me 70 files!! I was not expecting that many.... the description did say "at least 50" but I was expecting 50-55. I'm very happy with the results though I do wish I let myself do more toothy smiles - that's my insecurity though, it felt funny smiling wide when nothing was making me laugh, haha. I'll share a couple of them when I get home from work tonight! Thanks for asking about it!

We got a photographer in Switzerland last spring even though 2 of our kids weren’t there. It was the first time my husband and I had pictures together that weren’t on an iPhone in over a decade. And I got some individual pics. These were the first professional pics since my senior year of high school. I am so glad, there is no other souvenir I would want to bring home. Go do it, have fun-you’ll enjoy the memory for years to come.
