I just saw this: "A cow just wandered through my front yard. I live on <street>, at <cross street>. She was heading west." and it made me wonder. What have you seen on your Nextdoor list that makes you go hmmmm?

Man, this just inspired me to join my neighbourhood NextDoor and I wish I hadn't. I thought I have been living beside normal people, peacefully for the last 10 years. I have not . A guy posted about wanting to start a model airplane club, which resulted in a crazed backlash. After about 10 posts, the main woman arguing admits that she doesn't know what a model airplane is. But it doesn't sound good for the environment and they shouldn't be encouraging the youth like this. This is going to be terrible for my productivity.

Well I would enjoy the weird posts... but got so SICK and tired of the same old issues... 1. What restaurant are they building now? I hope it's not "fast Food" "a chain" "something unhealthy" and so forth. 2. Drivers in the neighborhood and around the school. 3. Why don't they build a xxx here? (our community has been a sleepy not quite a cow town but not a suburb either).. so we are getting lots of stuff being built especially in the last year or so. It's the same posts over and over again I had to get off of it. I have it closed down but I can still go look if I want. I haven't had the desire yet in over six months. Now I wonder if I missed anything.. LOL

We live in a pretty boring neighborhood. All ours ever has is the usual who do you recommend to do (fill in the blank), buy/sell/trade/free, people looking for babysitters or pet sitters, and people wondering what all the sirens on (fill in the road name) were about. Also the crime reports when someone’s car was rifled through or car windows broken to get to a visible garage door opener, that kind of stuff. Every once in a while there will be a dustup about something when someone gets their undies in a twist, but it’s pretty infrequent.

Mine is not really about a single post, but an entire thread of posts.
A few months ago, according to some neighbors, we were under siege from dog owners who walked their dogs and didn't clean up after them. While I think it's incredibly rude for dog owners to not to clean up after their dogs, I didn't think the problem was nearly as bad as some people were making it out to be. We have lived in this neighborhood for three years and I've never found any dog poop in my yard which didn't belong to my two pups. Some people were acting like every square inch of our neighborhood was covered in three feet of dog poop.
Some neighbors went so far as to threaten violence against neighbors who didn't clean up after their dogs.
It got so bad, I felt like a criminal every time I walked my dogs, although I always cleaned up after them. I always made sure that I prominently carried my brightly colored poop bag in my hand for all to see, instead of stuffing the unused poop bag in my pocket until I needed it.
There were so many rants on Next Door that the homeowners association finally installed three different stations in the public areas of our neighborhood where dog owners could get free poop bags.
Suddenly, all the complaints about dog poop stopped as quickly as they began. In reality I don't think dog owners were even using the free poop bags. Most of us just continued to keep our own stash at home. The rare dog owner who doesn't bother to clean up after his dog probably isn't going to bother to go out of his way to get a free poop bag.
There was a feeling that the complainers had been heard and the problem had been solved. We haven't had another dog poop thread since, although one complainer did express concern that the dog owners would get the free poop bags, clean up after their dogs and then carelessly toss the bags in their neighbor's yards. Thank goodness everyone saw how absurd this idea was and no one else commented on it.
The complainers have now moved on to other pressing issues such as neighbors who park their cars in their driveways instead of their garages.

I can't believe someone actually admitted they didn't know what they were talking about! Thankfully there's not too much drama on the ones I'm on (we're right at the edge of 3 so joined them all). There's some of the "if you have a teen driver, be sure they're not blowing around stopped school busses!" stuff, but that's about it.

Sigh, our ND is so boring compared to what I hear. There was a heated argument once about a walking/bike trail that was to be voted on. That was the busiest and heated post I've seen. Everything else is pretty boring. Oh wait, someone had a poor experience at a popular restaurant and some took exception to how she handled it (just complaining on ND, not talking to management or posting on their FB page for feedback etc).

Yeah, mine has a shocking amount of overt racism and unfounded crime paranoia so I noped outta there so fast...
The craziest was a huge group vent over the police refusing to send an officer out to investigate a "suspicious person" report. A black man happened to be walking down the sidewalk through our neighborhood from one main street to another and the local residents were *shook*. Several called the police demanding that the man be stopped and questioned. There were no grounds, sidewalks are for walking on, he was walking on a sidewalk, the only issue was the color of his skin. So, because the local police refused to racially profile this guy, the people in the neighborhood were complaining that they don't listen to the concerns of residents, are too lazy to do their jobs, and put "being PC" over the safety of the citizens.
Same reason I left all the local Facebook groups. Racism and unfounded crime paranoia.

All I know is that the folks in my area are terrified of teens who wear hoodies.
“Beware...I was getting my mail from the mailbox today and a teenage boy was walking down the street with his hood up. Be careful out there!”

Our ND seems to have a lot of posts for lost pets. I do like that most pets are found and returned to their owners. The strangest thing I've seen is one guy wanted to start a swingers group. That didn't go over well at all!

Mine is full of lost pets, free kittens, complaints about the city and how crooked the city is, complaints about drivers, garbage collection, and weed. Oh and stuff for "sell" or "I am saleing this."
There is one man who types in caps lock permanently and is barely coherent so there is some internet translating needed there. A lady on my street claims people are targeting her house with pebbles and that the "rowdy" boys bother her. The rowdy boys are toddlers. The only other boys on our street are my teenagers who would rather game than throw pebbles.
The weirdest one I saw was someone claiming to see 300-400 bats fly out of a school chimney one evening and that the district should do something about it. Then it devolved into fighting about the benefits of bats vs how toxic they are and they are pooping all over the kids' desks. It was funny because the building in question is no longer used as a school, just adminstration offices until they can tear it down and rebuild or sell the land and build elsewhere. I am sure he saw bats but I doubt it was 300+ bats.

People are complaining about hearing trains, even though they bought their house...get this...near train tracks! OMG, the horror! Also, there was a huge dust-up because a bunch of people want to know WHY the city won't build a bridge over one particularly congested train crossing which devolved into fighting when one person mentioned there was an underpass about two miles to the south...which resulted in the people who live near that underpass getting haughty saying that was ONLY for residents right near that underpass. Um, no. Public streets. It got ugly. I think it's still going on, but I ran out of popcorn and patience.

Let's take a look at today's headlines:
"Has anyone purchased a sofa from Joybird? Would you recommend? Can I come sit on your couch?" "ISO 1 bedroom for my favorite barista!" "Strange cat attack"
Lots of talk about car break ins in the area, unfortunately. Happened to us, with our locked car in the driveway, under a streetlight and motion activated lights. AND they didn't take anything!
I think I've mentioned it before, but my favorite was when someone posted a photo of a dog sitting in the sun on someone's lawn with "loose dog on the corner of X and Y. No collar. On second thought, it might be a coyote". (You could see from the photo that it was indeed a coyote.)

My ND has a dust up last week because some people were not happy that the old Burger King was rumoured to be turning into a Chik-Fil-A. Seems that many people like fast food more than equality for all.
There’s a black cat with a white collar that gets posted at least once a week because it’s out and about.
Coyotes and the ever increasing deer population are usual topics of conversation.
Seems like no one knows how to use the search function as every week people ask for recommendations for electricians, dog boarding, dentists, arborists, etc.

Mine is pretty boring, but my brother, who lives in Raleigh, told me about his neighbor who posted a pic of something laying by her mailbox. She was asking the neighbors what it was because she had never seen anything like it before and was afraid it was a bomb. Wanted to know if she should call the police.
IT WAS A TURTLE.

Okay I snorted at that one!! I totally forgot about the dog drama on mine (I posted I opted out seeing anything from ND anymore)... yeah there is 3 tons of poop laying ALL around. Oye!! I get the train one too!!! We have TWO train tracks on each side of town.. you can hear both if paying attention. They yammer about that all the time about putting in no horn intersections and all that. I have lived in my hometown for over 20 years now. After about a month, I don't even hear the trains anymore... I get annoyed if I get stuck sometimes, but I deal with it.. trains were here first.. DUH.

My area's semi-rural, so we don't get dog poo or suspicious person, or other stuff that would come with sidewalks. We do get the occasional "I keep seeing a blue van or whatever drive by and stop in random places type of post, but I'd like to think that with most houses a hundred feet or more from the road, that most people couldn't even tell the race of the driver.

One lady posted a warning about young people who looked at her hard one night.
We have a Dunkin' Donuts going in near a senior living community. For years, that space has been green space, yes, but full of weeds and a general eyesore. It's also had a big ass sign there saying it was zoned for business and available for lease. There's been a huge uproar over why doesn't the town turn it into a park, increased traffic, blocking view for seniors (who otherwise will be looking across the highway at a shopping center with a Safeway), etc. I said something horrible about if I were a senior, it might be nice to walk over for coffee and a visit with my friends. You'd have thought I suggested I was going to eat babies that Dunkin' Donuts were frying up for the masses. People are weird.

The one that struck me as funny was a person who wanted to know who kept putting their trash in said person's trash bin. They said they really didn't mind so much but it kept them from being able to throw away all of their trash. They never were able to catch the trash-leaver doing it, as far as I know. Weird. Even weirder that I LOL'd at it.

We have a Sears in town that closed last year. Since then, a group of people set up their tents and trailers in the large parking lot and were living there. They were chasing people off who visited nearby shops. They had a lot of kids and left a lot of trash all over. People posted who to contact since they were on private property and that place was shut down within days of the first post (it had been there prior to this for several months). Another person posted that a guy was living in his truck and trailer by the side of our lake. He'd been there off and on (mostly on) for almost two years. I walked past him every day I walked the dogs. He never bothered me, but people were irritated that he was breaking the parking laws and living there for free. My neighbor talked to him and he was a homeless vet. My neighbor said he seemed like a nice guy. I have to be honest, while he never bothered me, he was parked close enough to a junior high where young kids walked past his vehicle every school day. I met enough "nice enough" guys in junior high and high school and some weren't so nice. Within a few weeks after people started posting, he disappeared.
And my favorite is the guy who posted a picture of the poo that some giant dog left in his yard that also knocked over his trash cans. He got a lesson in the difference between bear and dog poo.

We have two on going sagas. A teenager with a drone and his 70 something year old neighbors that like to sunbathe nude and have sexy time in their back yard and pool. Teenager insists he flies his drone as far away from that "hellscape" as possible and the old dude is a perv trying to get attention. Based on their posts I side with the teenager. The other is a family that has a license from the city to keep bees. All his neighbors love their honey and say they never see more than a couple of stray bees, except 1. They post daily that they are being held prisoner in their home to bees. About a month into the feud the prisoners received the devastating news that all 4 of the teenage children had life threatening bee allergies, so now this was a matter of life and death, but providing any proof would be an invasion of their childrens privacy.

People are complaining about hearing trains, even though they bought their house...get this...near train tracks! OMG, the horror! Ours is the same except replace trains with airboats! They bought houses here by a big lake in Florida and then complain about the airboat noise! Especially during gator hunting season. The county has even limited airboats on the lake until 11pm only and they still complain.

This thread has prompted me to see if we have such a thing here. I put in my address to register, and it said "Congratulations! You're one of the first members of Nextdoor <insert suburb>." Then I got to the part where I had to enter my mobile phone number and then enter the 4 digit code that is sent to my mobile phone. But when I enter the 4 digit code and hit "Submit", it just sends me another 4 digit code. I've entered the code 4 times, and it keeps sending me another code - I think I'll give up!

Ours is boring, except for the women who are afraid of anyone who is a stranger walking down the sidewalk. She posted that (horror) she had seen this man walking and looking at the trash people had put out. (I figured he was a person curb picking) She enclosed a photo. The rest of the group shamed her for getting alarmed.
Now the outrage is that the water bill was high this month....ignoring the fact that we had a rate increase on October 1st.

How does ND work? Do you know who’s posting or is it anonymous? Ours you can see who is posting. But mine isn't near as fun/odd as everyone else's. Just people asking for recommendations, lost/found pets, talking about "why" on a sudden power outage, upcoming street repairs impacting access and other important/mundane stuff.

I read about this incident. It did not happen in my neighborhood. Some older guy got lost while driving and stopped to use his phone to get directions. Well, some hyper-vigilant woman got all excited and took a picture of the car, including the license plate, and posted the picture on Next Door and commented about how the guy was a "perv" (her words) and was taking pictures of her house and how her kids were outside. Of course, there were all kinds of responses to call the police, how disgusting he was, thanking her for the warning, etc. The guy was totally innocent. He wasn't taking pictures, he was calling for directions. Now his truck is posted on social media with a warning about being on the lookout for the "perv". He was just an elderly gentleman trying to get to his destination. The article said he was really hurt and embarrassed by the accusation. Poor guy.
