I've never had a background check done. When I started to teach they didn't do that (ya, I'm old).
When they say "background check" what does that mean? What do they look at? I figure now it's social media, but what else?

They check your police ( court) records, and old jobs. Some background checks interview neighbors, relatives and co-workers.
And heaven forbid if you have to a security clearance background check. My husband had to get one and I was even included on that one.
They run your fingerprints too.

At my school we do background checks on anyone wanting to volunteer around the kids or drive on field trips. The one we do just checks for arrest records, driving records, warrents, restraining orders...that kind of stuff. I think the worse we find are drunk driving records...and most of those are from waaaaay back.
We did have one mom that had like a four page printout of stuff.....but 99.% of ours come back perfectly clean.

It all depends on the job being sought.

I had to get finger printed 20 years into my career as a teacher. I remember thinking NOW you care about my record?

I figure now it's social media, but what else? It really depends on what the job is as to exactly what will be checked. If you will be working with kids they will look at police/court records for sexual misconduct type of stuff. If you are working with money they are going to look for embezzlement charges. Yes, to social media.

I hadn't thought it would be different for different jobs. I guess I figured that it would be the same no matter what your job would be. It makes sense to focus on what the need is.
Thanks ladies!

It depends on the job you are seeking and the company’s policy. You can include anything in a background check; criminal (by county and state), sex offender, education, previous employment, social media
Background checks are one of the main focuses of my job. Our basic check (that everyone gets) is criminal. Depending on the position and what the hospital we are contracting with it could include education, sex offender, 10 panel drug test (tobacco sometimes). We don’t do social media but that is an option to include when ordering.

We do a background check on warrants and arrests. We use live scan which checks state records and then also FBI. We also drug test.
