What can I use to freshen up the smell of a musty sofa sleeper mattress?
DS will be sleeping on it for 4 nights starting tomorrow night. I just opened it up to air it out a bit. I am very strongly affected by fragrances as well as smoke, musty smells, etc.
My best idea so far is to lightly mist it with a diluted vinegar solution. (We love Salt and Vinegar chips so maybe he wouldn't mind a bit of a vinegar smell if it lingers?) I don't have a good place outside to air it out in the "fresh air" - and we have some smoke particulates in the air, along with pollens that I don't want to bring indoors.
What would you do in this scenario?
Thanks!
I'm heading out to a meeting and to run some errands. Will be back in a few hours.

White vinegar would help. The smell doesn't linger once it dries. Also how about bicarbonate of soda? Or how are you with natural essential oils like tea tree or peppermint?

if at all possible, mist it with vinegar and put it outside in the sun. if you can't move it, do a mist with vinegar. let it dry. repeat. do a few times until the smell is abated.

Sprinkle an entire box of baking soda on it, let it sit for at least an hour and then vacuum it up.

Vinegar would be so much worse for me than Febreze.

Go to Walgreens or Ace Hardware and get ZorbX. Spray the crap out of the couch with it. It takes all smells away amazingly! And does not have a scent!

I make a mixture of plain vodka, witchazel and essential oils ( lavender Geranium and lemongrass) I spray my sheets and closet with this instead of febreeze.

I agree that sunshine would be best, and spraying with vinegar and letting it dry would help. Vinegar does not smell once it dries. I use it to freshen up my laundry.

Honestly, if you can't put it outside, I would consider picking up a quilted mattress cover to cover it.

Yes to the vinegar or baking soda. The vinegar won’t smell at all once it’s dry.

I keep a mason jar that I poked holes in the lid full of baking soda that has rosemary essential oil added. It’s a great carpet refresher, so I’m sure it would be great for what you need—-just sprinkle it on and let it sit for a bit and then vacuum off.

If you are going to need it tomorrow, I'd use the baking soda idea. Leave it on as long as possible, vacuum, and make the bed. I was going to suggest vodka or vinegar, but I'm not sure it would dry by the time that you need it.

Mix of hydrogen , water, and dawn soap. Place in spray bottle. Spritz all over. Let dry. Vacuum off white left over residue. Will get rid of smell and stains.
We did this for ds' matress when he peed through the protector.

I just read some icky sounding reviews on Amazon, but it sounds like you've had no issues with it. "Will this work for musty basement odors? Answer: Hello Colleen. from My experience this product does not work well on musty odors. I bought the 32 oz bottle to use on a chair I received from an elderly family member that had a musty moth ball odor. I used almost the entire bottle on just the seat cushion it had no effect. It also leaves a tacky residue on any hard surface. So tacky in fact my foot came of my house shoe while walking across it. That is just another con of the product I think you may be interested to know. It did not remove the odor and when spritzed in the air you must use some sort of solvent cleaner ( I used 70 percent Propyl Alcohol) to then remove the tacky residue left behind so it is pretty much a lose lose. I called customer service and they said they could not help me that they had had reports of it working on some moth ball and musty smells but not all like it is a hit or miss product and I lost all faith in the product itself."

I'm going to try this method suggested by papercrafteradvocate this time, as I'm not sure spray of any kind would dry quickly enough, though it seems that alcohol should, right? I have some nice peppermint oil here... will try that in the b. soda. If it needs more deodorizing later, I may try an alcohol based spray which some of you have suggested. Thanks again! The odor isn't strong - my husband can't smell it, but I can. Sensitive nose and I hate the idea of anything musty around here. I would have coughing fits if I had to sleep on the mattress as is. Don't want anyone else to sleep there, but DH or DS would prob. be just fine.

Ds has unique pee due to short bowel syndrome and being on a medical formula with kidney and liver issues. Got the strong smell and strain out! I had my nose up on the clean mattress and no nasty smell or strong odor.

I've made a homemade fabric refresher spray similar to this as well, but I can't remember if there was witch hazel in mine. I hate how Febreeze smells but loved this.

Thanks! I just read some icky sounding reviews on Amazon, but it sounds like you've had no issues with it. i have only used it on soft surface/cloth so no tackiness! I think almost any spray product would leave a tacky feeling on wood or floors.
