Alison (almost 12, 6th grade) hasn't found a jacket she really likes in years. They always turn out to be too bulky or itchy or too hot or too cold or - in the case of last one - too yellow.
A few relevant factors: She doesn't have a locker, so she has to carry the coat all day (in addition to a huge backpack, a trombone, and the folders/books that won't fit in her backpack). She has to walk outside across campus at least twice a day (lunch and either band or choir), and her bus driver is not great about proper temperature control. The temperature is rarely below 35 here. She hasn't really found her style yet, so I'd like to get something that isn't necessarily trendy, but that won't be too babyish. She is not terribly observant of other kids clothing, so she can't tell me what the other kids wear.
So, what do your teens consider comfortable, stylish, and weather appropriate?

No jacket, ever. When it's cool he wears a hoodie. When it's cold he wears a hoodie. During our heat wave, he's lamenting the fact that he can't wear a hoodie. It seldom gets below 50 f during the day here, so I'm okay with it. And he always wears shorts to school, no matter the weather.

My 15 and 17 yr. old daughters did not wear a jacket. It drove me insane! We told them that if their bus breaks down, and it's 10 degrees out, they will be in big trouble!
Last year they got northface jackets and while they don't keep them warm on the very cold days, at least it's something.
I tell them that if the superintendent sees that the students don't wear coats, she will be reluctant to give delays because of extreme cold. She would figure that the kids don't wear jackets, so cold must not bother them! (I am kidding of course!).

We live in an area that doesn't get too cold so hoodies work most of the year. My 14 yr old has 4 or 5 different ones and usually just keeps them on all day.

My kids rarely wear anything more than a hoodie, mostly because they don't have lockers and hate carrying a coat. Our winter morning temps do get down to freezing and are regularly in the low 40s, but the still don't want anything more than a hoodie.
With your daughter having to carry her coat, I'd look at something like a shell that can layered with a sweater or hoodie and easily stuffed into her backpack.

If you could ever get a teen/tween to even wear one. I think it goes against their personal code of conduct for being a teenager. I would second the Northface or LLBean sometimes has decent ones.

17 yo DD has pretty much warn her band hoodie for most of high school. As the PP above me says, it's in the 30's sometimes in the morning but usually 50's during the day at the coldest so that works. We've tried different jackets/coats and none get worn much at all.

Hoodies here too, and it gets cooooooooold in Indiana in the winter!!!! I learned a long time ago, it wasn't a battle I was going to fight. Why waste the money on something they won't wear?

I think that my kid owns exactly one pair of pants-a pair of jeans that the school allows them to wear if it gets below 60, but even then he hardly wears them. He has a school approved (mandatory uniform school) hoodie that he wears when it cools off. If it is really cold (by Florida standards) he wears a long sleeved tee under his short sleeved uniform shirt along with the hoodie and shorts. When the kids were little I used to buy them jackets. They never wore them so I quit buying them.

Neither of my kids wear a coat to school. Yes, if the bus breaks down, they will be cold. But we live in a huge suburban area. They won't freeze to death--there are stores and houses the entire way to school.
DS wears a hoodie to school. DD usually wears a jacket most days (like a blazer, but I wouldn't call them blazers.) I think she looks like she is going off to a job, but I don't complain. She always looks polished and put together.

A fleece-lined hoodie for temps between 40 to -20.

Thanks for all the ideas! I'll let DD look and see if any of these appeal to her. I think she might like a North Face. She wears a light jean jacket that she wears a good bit, but this morning, she said she needed something warmer.

Dd (11, 6th grade) has a fleece hoodie jacket from Gap she loves (so soft!), a water proof, fleece lined hoodie jacket from Target, and a puffer from Old Navy. We are in Southern Ca but are by the mountains and it cold here. We get snow once in a blue moon and some morning it can be 40° when we leave for school. And she does love her hoodies What about layers and use a fleece lined jacket or fleece hoodie jacket? Those are eazy to tie around your waist to walk around campus.

My DD has a Northface jacket that she got from my boss's daughter and she loves it. When it gets really cold she wears a Columbia coat.

My son doesn't wear a jacket unless he's skiing. I'm ecstatic if he'll take a hoodie when it's below freezing. My daughter is a whole different story. She has a few light sweatshirts (she likes Addidas) and some fleeces for when it's a bit colder. She has a couple of the puffie jackets in different colors, and if it's really chilly she has a huge jacket complete with faux fur color that looks like she's going to Siberia. It's pretty funny to watch the two of them go off to school. One dressed for Siberia and one in shorts and short sleeves with a hoodie reluctantly shoved in his backpack.

I drop my son off at school, and he take a bus right to our driveway, so he's perfect happy to just wear a hoodie all year. he just switches to a warmer hoodie.

Hoodies or a zip up sweatshirt. My three, one in 5th, 7th, and 12th, haven't let me buy them a jacket since about 4th grade! That seemed to be the cutoff point for its not cool to wear a jacket age! I sometimes try and buy them with the extra little wool on the inside for more warmth. But we also live in Arizona so winters a very mild

In high school the in thing were Columbia jackets--the combination ones that were a light outer jacket and fleece inner jacket that you could zip together and wear skiing.
Bonus cool points if you had a lift ticket hanging from your zipper.
I still have mine. I bought a men's medium in Navy.
I just prefer more girlie type light peacoats and blazers now. Surprisingly Victoria Secret has some really cool lightweight jackets and coats.
I also have a few hoodies.
I've always been warm blooded. People stop me all the time asking me where my coat is. I'm having hot flashes--again--leave me alone!

Mostly just his hockey club jacket if absolutely necessary (usually none, though!), but this year he did ask for one from Vineyard Vines that he will be getting for Christmas. Fashion is starting to matter a little more to him, at great pain to my checkbook!

Mine never wore warm coats/jackets. My ds wore a hoodie, always. And often shorts (long ones) even in winter. sigh... Dd wore sweaters, or a thin water-resistant zip up jacket, but it wasn't warm. She'd just put a sweater under it. Then she could roll up the jacket part and put it in her backpack, and tie the sweater around her waist if it was hot in the school. Her senior year it suddenly became fashion to wear a vest so I figured that kept her a bit warmer. My dd did have a locker but for her senior year the locker was on the 4th floor at the far end of the building, and all her classes were on the 1st and 2nd floors, at the end nearest the front. So no, she didn't use the locker.

Ooh, the other very popular jackets are the Uniqlo thin down jackets like this: Are those coats pretty warm? I went to their website and they have a longer version with a hood. I need a new coat and since this is supposed to be a hell of a winter in Michigan I am considering it.
