“It’s amazing that something that looks this good came from a cow’s stomach in the 19th century.” This is a bezoar, a hardened mass formed in a ruminant animal’s stomach as the animal chewed hair. Since medieval times, people have believed that these stones were endowed with healing properties, and they were used mainly as an antidote to poison. (Needless to say, don’t try this at home.)

Aha! But did the Half-Blood Prince actually say what a bezoar is, or just to shove one down their throats?

Aha! But did the Half-Blood Prince actually say what a bezoar is, or just to shove one down their throats? I actually have my copy right next to me. He asks him where to look for one, and, when Harry doesn’t know, he says, “A bezoar is a stone taken from the stomach of a goat and it will save you from most poisons.”

I knew what it was but I have no idea where I learned it. I am a pretty voracious reader, so I'm sure I picked it up reading something somewhere. That is the first one I've ever seen a picture of.

Yup, and only because of Harry Potter. But, I sure didn't imagine it looking like that.

Yes I do. My daughter has gastroparesis (delayed gastric emptying) and one of the dangers are bezoars forming from undigested food. If one forms it can be a medical emergency. This is why people with this diagnosis have to have a low fibre diet and nothing that is very fibrous like broccoli etc.

I too was going to quote Harry Potter. Love that others thought of it as well.

That so many of us know this from Harry Potter just validates my faith in the benefits of reading YA lit!

Of course! But did I know they were actually real? No. Just thought JK Rowling made them up.
