I'm currently sporting an almost healed black eye from the asshole in front of me slamming his seat back directly into my face last week. I'm not usually pretty but my knees were all up in his spine for 4 hours after that. I'll be instantly loyal to the airline who moves the seats back so the windows line up properly and it's a non issue. Don't be so hard on yourself. You are always pretty!

They should just take the option away. Even if there were ample leg room people would still bitch about the person in front reclining. There is no winning. So just take it away. How would this even be an option for overnight flights? I'm sorry but that is not a feasible option.

My DH is 6’2” and is all legs. On the way back to the UK from Canada, he had the woman in front of him repeatedly slamming back in her seat trying to make the seat recline into DH’s space but it wasn’t going anywhere as DH’s knees were hard up against the back of her seat. There was nowhere else for them to go. She then became all hysterical, threw a bit of a temper tantrum and said she couldn’t possible go on without reclining, as DH kept very calm and asked her where exactly she thought his legs should go. She eventually gave up, but what was funny is that she was on a row with the rest of her family, all of whom were reclining into my and my two adults kids’ space, and not one of them offered their seat to her (my DH suggested that perhaps they might want to).
I’m in the don’t recline camp, and even though I’m small and have more leg room than most on a plane, I don’t like having my table shoved towards my abdomen anymore than the next person.

This has been discussed here several times as I’m sure many of us remember- the pro reclining peas are obviously keeping quiet on the whole 😉

I'm not going to be a dick about it, but if my seat reclines, I will probably do so right after take off. I've never been in an airplane where the seats reclined more than a few inches (at the top) so I've never had to worry about putting my head in someone else's lap.

On any flight less than 5 hours I can manage without reclining. Longer than that and i either pay for economy plus or trawl online for cheap business class seats. DH, 6’2” prefers economy basic and sits all cramped up whenever possible, ie when flying alone

This kind of falls into "hate the game, not the player" category for me. I strongly prefer if the person in front of me does not recline but the seats are made to do just that and who am I to say they can or cannot do something. It would be nice they eased back and if drinks have been served already, give a heads up but then I am so jaded, I don't expect courtesies anymore. I don't ever fully recline but if I want to rest, I'll put it back a small notch take the edge off being bolt upright - no one would even notice I moved the seat.
For the most part, this hasn't been too much of an issue but when it is; it really stands out. I used to have a portable folding CD player and someone pushed back so hard and so fast the player hit the floor, I've had laptop covers slammed shut, drinks sliding a bit. On a trip to Ireland, the person in front of me had her seat fully reclined the entire flight except during meal service but she put it back the second SHE was done eating, I wasn't. The flight attendant asked her to put her seat back up. One time we upgraded to first class and the guy in front of me not only fully reclined for the entire flight he kept pushing back the seat for most of the flight because I guess he needed to recline more?? Just sit still.
We do book the extra leg room/comfort seats because DH is tall and needs the space which helps but not always enough. And now we get bulkhead seats when we can and hope for the best.

You won’t die if you have to stay in a seated position (threat of blood clots aside). You’ll be uncomfortable, and cranky, but you will be fine. Besides, airlines have made it abundantly clear they don’t give two shits about the comfort of their passengers. Why would they care if you can recline two inches in your tiny seat?

I've never been in a plane where I would actually call what the seat does 'reclining' though-- a couple inches is NOT reclining, in my opinion. And like someone previously said, I'm short enough that the upright seat head rest pushes my head FORWARD. Not comfortable.

Maybe the seats shouldn’t be on top of one another? The reclining seat is a throwback to when rows were spaced further apart. It’s annoying but I can survive. The lack of space is what makes me not want to travel anymore I hate it. Seats were never this small and rows were never this close together. I call it steerage rather than economy because that’s the truth. And to me worse than reclining ( way worse ) is when the person in front of me flings their hair over the back of the chair. Eww bitch ( a long haired man hasn’t done this to me yet ) get your hair out of my face ffs. It’s disgusting to throw your hair over the seat to the passenger behind you. You’d have more manners & class & self awareness if you were raised by wolves! I now make sure I carry an old fashioned pen with the weird metal clip which somehow gets caught in said hair repetitively as I write or do sudoku on my tray table. Eventually the hair goes back where it belongs. I’ve lost one pen when they finally pulled their hair back I just looked at her and raised my eyebrows got out another pen, poised to go back to sudoku, when she glared at me over the seat. If I said anything it wouldn’t have been pretty it would probably have started with “look bitch... your lucky I don’t have the heart to chew gum & blow bubbles”

Tiny airline seats suck for sure. I cannot sleep sitting up, even with a little recline. DH has no problem and dozes right off. That means he’s raring to go when we get there, and I’m exhausted and miserable.
He wants to travel abroad this spring and I’m honestly dragging my feet. It’s so miserable to travel, and I feel like I spend the first half of the trip recovering from the lost night of sleep plus jet lag. I’m honestly not sure there’s anything else in Europe I want to see badly enough to put up with that right now. Italy and Spain can wait until we can afford Polaris seats. 😂

I find it impossible to sleep on planes-even long overnight flights, so I don't recline because I am always reading a book or watching a movie. In a perfect world, I would prefer the person in front of me not recline, but I don't get mad when they do, it's not against the rules. We generally fly Delta, United or Southwest and as others have said, their seats only recline a few inches so it's not that big of a deal.

I'd say the exception is on an overnight flight. If you're one of the poor unfortunates who sits in coach (that would be me), it's OK to recline your seat after dinner when they turn off most of the lights. I disagree. I got back from my first trip to Europe in June. Going out on Delta wasn't bad. The seats didn't recline and it was a 2-4-2 configuration, so DH got his window and I got an aisle. On the way back though, I had a middle seat on an Air France flight that did have reclining seats. The woman next to me was sitting with her legs spread and the person in front of me reclined their seat. I am not claustrophobic in the least, but that was the most uncomfortable 9 hours of my life. I literally could not move. I couldn't get anything out of my bag. If I had needed to go to the bathroom, I wouldn't have been able to get out of my seat even if the woman nest to me got up to let me out. It was awful. So, I say it is incredible rude to the person behind you to recline your seat, especially in coach.

She sat in front of a mom and dad with a 3 yr old boy. They gave him gum to pop is ear drums at take off, then let him strectch out on the floor and play with his tablet. Then the lady put her hair over her chair. The mom said something and the lady gave a reply but the hair stayed where it was. End of the flight, the lady was so upset because about 4 inches from the bottom of her hair was a huge wad of gum. Jennifer

I always seem to get behind the broken seat that over-reclines..... and my knees are digging into the seat in front of me and my tray becomes unusable. I wish awareness and common courtesy prevailed. I understand it is the airlines fault, but until they all address it we need to complain and work together. If the person in front of me acknowledged the need to recline, are aware it might make my trip more uncomfortable, I would work with accommodating them and tolerating the situation. Two situations that have become more of a problem for me (because I like an aisle seat) are people standing and sticking their asses in my face, and using the seats for a rail as they walk down the aisle-pulling on them so hard they snap back and hit my head. Use the overhead bins for balance if you are tall enough (and I think most people are) would be better if you are going to pull on the seats.

we flew from Atlanta to Toronto over a week ago. Not only did the couple in front of us insist on reclining their seats the full amount, she kept wiggling around & pushing back on her seat every 15 minutes or so - right into my dh's knees. He finally lost his temper & told her to sit still & put her seat up LOL. She of course had no idea what he was talking about I'm definitely in the "no recline" camp. BUT overnight flights are an exception. I think everyone should be allowed to recline then. And on the one i'm doing to Denmark next year I also paid the extra $$ to sit behind a wall so theres no one in front of us

This is dejavu. We had this EXACT conversation before Lauren left. She was VERY anti reclining and said she'd use the tool to stop ppl. I believe it's been banned though.

My neck starts to ache after a while and, from Hawai'i, any flight is a minimum of 5 hours, unless you're flying to a neighbor island. Count me in the camp that reclines, although I don't stay reclined the whole flight and never when the flight attendants serve drinks or food. My hubby has long legs and has medical issues with his ankles and knees, and he needs to stretch out his legs, so reclining is necessary. However, unless we're going to a neighbor island, we pay extra to upgrade so he has more leg room and doesn't need to recline as much.
