For those who want to turn it off--go into your settings and find the sound and cc option, set it to off. On some TVs there is an option for where you want the CC to be--mid screen, or top or bottom.... For some t.v. cable boxes or add-ons like Apple TV, there is also the ability to turn on CC on that device. So, you may have CC turned off on your television settings, but on on your Apple TV and if you watch a program through your Apple TV or cable box, the captions show up.

Yes. I use it all the time. I have some hearing loss, but I’ve used it long before that was an issue.
My DH hates it, so when we watch tv together, he turns it off. Of course he insists his hearing in fine, but turns up the volume to an insane level. He wants me to get my hearing tested and get hearing aids, all the while insisting his hearing is great. Sigh. Go figure.

Yes because it’s noisy a lot of the time at my house and I actually like it because sometimes it’s hard to understand what the actors are saying, especially in British shows. Or if someone talks during the show, I don’t have to rewind to see what was heard. I mainly use it on Netflix not on cable tv.

Yes! I am unfortunately losing my hearing. Genetic condition. I can't hear the TV at a normal volume.

Yup, I use it 100% of the time, on Netflix, Hulu, and YT when the option is available. I get a bit salty when it isn't lol I have significant hearing loss in my right ear, I have a very hard time hearing mens voices or low tones. I end up missing the majority of what is said then I am lost. Hate going to the movie theaters because of this.

using the closed captioning function on the TV would drive me batty!! I have to watch AND listen to what's going on, and closed captioning would mean I'm reading the words and NOT watching the action.
I do use CC to watch a youtube video if I don't have my headphones, but that's it.
ETA: if we're watching a program where they're mumbling or they have a harder-to-understand accent, my DH will stop, rewind, and replay scenes (which can get kind of annoying). But that's because I can catch the gist of what's being said much more easily than he can, plus he has some (undiagnosed) hearing loss.

I lost the original remote for my tv in my scrapbook room and someone turned on CC and now I can't get it off. Sound is still on, but there are also words at the bottom. There's probably a way to get it off but I can't figure it out using my Direct TV remote. mom I don't know if yours is set up the same way as ours but here's how I turn it off/on with my DirecTV remote: go to the INFO button, on the options that pop up you should see CC. Scroll over to it and then you can click OFF. Yes, I use CC. I do have some hearing loss and also can't stand a TV that's turned up too loud. I do like CC now because I catch names or other things I might miss without it. It's a must when watching Walking Dead just to catch everything that Eugene says!

All the TVs I watch are set to yes. People are always making noise or being loud. I also like being able to read the dialog when the actors are talking lower or whispering. Dh does not like it when he is watching and he does not use it on his TV. He just turns his up really loud

Yes - especially when I watch a BBC production.

I started using it with British shows because sometimes I don't quite understand some words or phrases. Now, it's on all the time because my DH is hard of hearing and I can't stand the volume to be up to super sonic to watch TV. I got used to it being on very quickly and it's very easy for me to watch and listen.

I had no idea it was such a popular thing to do! I don't, though. If I'm watching TV, I'm often listening and not really looking. I like to hear accents & figure them out. If I miss something, oh well!

They are very easy to use and I won't go to the movies without them. If a movie theater doesn't offer the devices, I don't use that theater.

I’m another who had no idea so many people were using the closed captioning. I can honestly say I have never turned it on, and I’m pretty sure I don’t know how and would have to figure that out.
I also am usually on my iPad when I’m watching (oftentimes more listening than eyes on screen), so I would have to change my way of watching TV to really make use of it.

Yes I do about 60% of the time and I have no hearing loss. I like the CC captioning on depending on the voice of the actors (accents or mumbling) and of course use it when watching movies and shows in other languages. I'm a visual learner and an avid reader so I don't mind reading the captions and watching the TV at the same time. To me it's so much easier to understand everything that's going on instead of trying to straining to understand an actor who mumbles his way through his lines-what was it that he said? Something about what?

no, i am with you and find it distracting. i have noticed in some american shows, they subtitle people who are speaking english - but have an accent.

Live PD, Moonshiners, etc. And I always wonder why they do it because I can understand them perfectly fine! (which I guess means I also have an accent, huh? lol!)

Yes I use it a lot on shows like GOT and Outlander. Usually for the shows on Showtime, HBO, Starz and Netflix.

No, because I’m never not multitask when I watch tv. Scrapping, crocheting, peaing, surfing the web etc. it would help.
