From Jan - May of this year, I lost about 50 pounds. I have since stopped dieting and have gained about 15 pounds back. I plan on getting back on the stick after the holidays.
However, my hair is getting soooo thin from my weight loss, that I am reluctant to go back to losing weight. It is getting so thin in the front, I am having a hard time concealing it. For about 4 months, I have been taking biotin, I have had to adjust my thyroid meds 3 times due to the weight loss, and I have added collagen for the past 6 weeks. I "think" maybe the hair loss has slowed, but I don't see any signs of new growth. From reading online, hair growth could take up to a year.
This is really depressing me. I really want to lose more weight (and have to for my health) but I can't afford to lose more hair. I used to have amazing curly hair, but now it is just a flat mess.
For those that have gone through this, did your hair grow back? How long did it take? Did you take any supplements?
I hate this! I don't like to be vain, but this is really affecting my self-esteem.

Yes, I’ve lost significant weight twice (50 and 70lbs.) and both times I lost a lot of hair, especially in the front. When I hit my goal weight this last time it started growing back, and three years later I can’t tell now where it was thinning. I also took Biotin and I think that helped. It was a bit depressing though and I understand your concern. Good job on your weight loss! ETA: I’m going to add that I lost the 70 lbs. by returning to a job that literally worked my butt off. I burned more calories than I was eating, but I was eating healthily. I have been a high protein/low refined carb eater for many years now. I still lost hair. Every body is different and responds in different ways to weight loss .

I’ve lost 40 pounds and I have not noticed any hair loss (more than usual). That would be distressing.

I lost 60 lbs and my scalp was very visible. I am not sure I care that much about my weight if my hair is going to fall out again. I love my long hair and if I weigh too much, well, I will just keep my hair.

i did, but that was because i did it thru bariatric surgery. that can often be a big enough schock to yoru system, like having a baby, that it triggers telogen effluvium- basically hair loss about 3-4 mos after the surgery/event. if your diet was drastic and sudden, i could see this happening to you as well. however, when i lost and gained weight every time before, i did NOT have hair loss. i have thyroid issues as well, and hair shedding is one of my first signs my levels are off. that is where i would be looking. my hair did grow back. i lost from months 4-10 post op, and now i have a lovely 4-5" fringe everwhere as it's growing back. i started with quite thin hair too. it's depressing, i know! maybe look into a topper or hair piece? there are also thickening powders that disguise your scalp and make your hair look thicker. do nto fall prey to any Monat or MLM products, they are the worst. whatever happens, losing weight for your health should be priority, and you'll be able to hide the hairloss easier than the extra 50, 60, 80 lbs.

I’ve lost 100 pounds and my hair has changed a lot. I’ve lost a lot of it and I’ve lost a lot of my curl too.

Does it make a difference how much protein you eat while losing weight? I am on Trim Healthy Mama facebook groups and hair loss is not something that comes up often, but the plan encourages a good amount of protein.

I also went through bariatric surgery and had some hair loss. What we were told is that biotin supplements don't work unless you are truly biotin deficient, which very, very few people are. The best thing you can do is follow a healthy diet with a lot of protein. And then just work through it. I have thick curly hair so while I had a significant amount of hair loss it didn't show much, but i could feel the difference. The hair loss eventually stopped probably 3 months after it started and my hairdresser is seeing the grow back.
I don't know about anyone else but i would much rather be fit and healthy than to have temporary thinning hair.

YES - I lost 90 lbs a couple of years ago (and have kept it off, thank you) and my hair started falling out so bad, I was almost in tears. My doctor kept saying it was temporary but I didn't think so but luckily after about 7 or 8 months, it finally started growing back. It is still thinner than it used to be but it grows really fast now and stopped falling out so much.

I didn’t have hair loss issues at all. My first thought is, are you getting enough protein? But you’re also adjusting your meds on issues I don’t have, so I can’t relate to that.

Yes, and it just had to run its course. My hair got thin but within six months it rebounded and is looking thick on top again. It will take a while for the lengths to get back to where they were but I got a nice haircut and feel good about it again.
This is extremely common and is the body responding to the stress of weight loss.

1st, congrats on the weightloss!!
I have lost almost 60lbs in the last 6 months with the guidance of my Dr. No hair loss at all. I have been eating low fat, lots of fruits veggies, and lean meats and fish. I don't drink a multivitamin cause I eat tons of fruits and veggies. The only supplement I take is iron for my anemia.
I also don't have any underlying health conditions, so I don't know of that has anything to do with it?

No, I’m over 100 pounds down and my hair is still very thick.
I have lost it at a slow pace eating low carb (not keto) and high protein, with medical levels monitored.

I've lost 45lbs, but it happened really slowly. I didn't notice any excessive hair loss, but I am trying to eat really clean and nutritiously dense foods.
I'm sorry it is happening to you other peas.

I lost 80, but in two sections separated by a couple years. It’s hard to tell if any hair loss was from weight drop, because of menopause, which had already caused severe hair loss. My hair has always been thin, then menopause decimated what was left. So considering, I’ve been very happy with the way my hair’s been looking lately. I think my hair likes my new way of eating. In certainly getting a lot more healthy, nutrient dense food.

No!!!!! I was in my 40s and it took me a year to lose a lot of weight. I went from a size 20 to a 2. I'm barely 5' so that was a huge loss (almost 100 lbs). Because I did it so slowly and because it wasn't a fad diet that eliminates healthy food groups that are important, I only saw better changes. I kept it off since 2002.
I can tell you that I became a diet/nutritional counselor there, and I knew if my clients weren't eating enough healthy fat or food then sometimes their ponytails got really tiny. Depends on their meds and medical history too though.
When dieting, lack of healthy fat seemed to be a key factor, along with not enough calories.

No. I lost 60 pounds 5 years ago using a whole foods, plant based diet which focuses on low fat, high carbs from whole foods, eliminating meat, diary and oils with as little processed foods as possible. The weight came off slowly and steadily and I haven't lost any of my hair. My hair turned from stick straight to wavy, almost curly when I hit menopause. I've always had thin strands (each strand of hair itself) but a lot of hair on my head. It still makes a thick braid in the back even at 59 years of age. I think my healthy diet helps with that.
I also have been hypothyroid for years (I inherited it from my father) and have been on medication for it. I take Armour Thyroid which is a naturally based thyroid medication vs. a synthetic thyroid medication. I see a talented doctor who knows to test not just TSH but all of the thyroid tests on me each year to get my balance just right.
I'm so sorry for all of the Peas on this thread who suffer from hair loss problems. It has to be so devastating.
OP you say you lost your curls-that it is a flat mess. Did you happen to go through menopause when that happened? Hormonal changes can make hair change from straight to curly and vise versa. My sister's hair was stick straight until she hit puberty and then hers changed to very curly.
Also you might want to consider seeing a doctor for your hair loss. Or you might want to check out The Curly Girl Method which involves using hair products (shampoo, conditioners and styling products) without sulfates, silicones or parabans. It's a method that increases the health of your hair especially if it's curly because it helps retain the moisture in your hair. I belong to a great facebook group called Curly Girls!- Support Group for Curly/Wavy/Natural Heathy Hair I've been doing the CG Method on my hair for over 10 years and I can tell (as can my hair dresser) that it's really helped my hair stay healthy even though I color it at home with a box color.
I wish you the very best in solving your hair loss.

I had weight loss surgery Sept 2018 and I have lost about 120 lbs. My hair started falling out at about 50 lbs loss. It is growing back and is about 3 inches long now. I didn't lose all of it so it was just thin but no bald areas. I was told this would happen ahead of time.
A doctor I worked with was a hair loss specialist and he said it would grow back. It just goes into a dormant phase and then when it starts the growing phase it will grow. And it has. It just looks really fuzzy/fluffy on top because it is so much shorter than the rest of my hair.

I have lost right at 200 pounds since May 2018, including 61 pounds of skin and tissue being surgically removed. My hair is thinning. I am taking Vitamin E and C and Biotin supplements along with a prenatal vitamin. The E/C/Biotin is also to help heal a surgical wound that reopened a few months a go.
A few ladies in a WLS group on FB who have lost hair swear by a certain shampoo. Can't recall the time right now though. Think it has keratin in it.

ETA: Make sure you are getting 60 grams of protein a day. My surgeon and RD with program both say don't eat more than 30 grams at a time. Has to do with absorption.

I bought my first topper from a local wig shop. It was as nice to be able to try it on and check colors in real life. They also helped trim and thin it and cut in some bangs. After I’ve purchased online from www.wigstudio1.com. They have a great Facebook group. I’ve also purchased a human hair piece from Highline Wigs (aka Toppers by Sharon). I found great initial tips from the YouTube channel Corner of Hope and Mane. My profile pic is a topper.
