before heading home to Cheyenne. Can't wait to see it. For those who have gone, did you have to park far from the stop?

We parked a couple blocks away. Ours was a 30 minute stop at a train depot in the middle of downtown so the depot itself only had a couple dozen spots but there were parking garages nearby.
YMMV if it's one of the all day things. Apparently the crowd for that the next day was ridiculous.

Good to know.. I think the train will go right through my town.. I am off going to look. I have never seen it.
Edited to add: Well it is pretty close to me.. at first it didn't look like it would be going through my town, but up the highway about 25 miles it shows it there. It's gotta be the same tracks. Maybe it just goes through the town without stopping??
Edited again: Shoot.. if it is indeed coming through it's on a Wednesday mid-morning... I won't be able to see it.. even if I drove over to the next town.. dang it.

The overnight stays say no public access (Limon and Denver), so I'm hoping to travel to the other stops. Thanks for the info.

That's the kind of stop we went to. The crowd was thick, but manageable. If you can stay through the entire stop you'll get the best experience. A lot of people crowd for its arrival, and then the crowd thinned some so people could get up close and take photos and such, and then they crowded near the track again for the departure. We went down so we were in front of it for departure so it could go right passed us.

We "chased" it, as did dozens of other train enthusiasts. Here in the desert, you can get right up to the tracks. So we parked and would wait for it to come, get out and watch it, and then race ahead of it and do it all over again. It was a lot of fun and lots of people were doing it. Perhaps it's arriving or departing on tracks nearby at such a time as you could watch it?

It will go through my town, not stop. We used to go see 844 every year on its way to or from Cheyenne, but they stopped last year. It makes a really cool noise. It makes me sad that it doesn't run anymore
We will go see Big Boy as we will be on Thanksgiving Break

The 4014 Big Boy just pulled into our metro area about 7:30 tonight. It’s here over night. It will still be here part of the day tomorrow- can’t remember exact times. I wanted to go so bad, but I just had hip surgery and have a huge brace and crutches, which don’t make for navigating crowds. My brother, has oh so generously offered to go downtown and shoot pics tomorrow. He makes so many “sacrifices “ for me! Not!! Haha

We looked to see if it would be doable to do that, but logistics and work schedules don’t make it possible. Fortunately my brother works close to downtown where the stop is, so he’s taking a couple of hours off to go down and see it...... for me of course.

My husband just spent two days chasing/photographing/videotaping it through Oklahoma into Kansas/Missouri. He will go see it again tomorrow in downtown KC. He had trouble getting close in several of the towns along the way. Mostly the closer to large cities the worse it got.

This is what my son wants to do from Kit Carson, CO to Limon, CO is to follow it up the highway as the tracks follow the road real close. It appears to travel a little slower than if one drives the road, so he should be able to get some good shots.

One year I was sitting at the railroad crossing and the gates came down (I was first in line) and there she came down the road. I didn't have anything to take a picture with either.. but it was SO cool. I had no idea it was coming.. so I lucked out big time. I couldn't figure out why there where all these people with high end cameras all over the place.. lol

No I don't think it will work as it is scheduled around 11:00 to go through the area.. even if it was off schedule I would be at work until 4pm. BUT my good friend will be in town and they love stuff like this especially if it is free... so I will pass that information to them and they might go track it down. They currently have five kiddos (they do foster and adoption stuff so I never know how many kiddos they will have..lol) My DD will be with them.. so could be fun for them.

We watched it pass through my neighborhood about a week and a half ago, and it is beautiful! I didn't go to its actual stop at our Amtrak station here because the weather was yukky and it was on a Thursday. I don't think the crowds were too bad though, most likely due to the weather.
ETA: This was a comment from one of my neighbors who went: DO NOT wait in the hour+ long line if you have kids for the UP Railcar experience. It is literally just a train car with poster boards on the wall telling the history of the Railroad, there is nothing and I mean NOTHING interesting regarding like a historical car or vintage anything. The cool cars are restricted access and not open to the public, it’s a tease. Lol

We were actually about 5-10 feet away from Big Boy and parked about 25 feet away. This was on a Saturday in the high desert in California. We didn't chase it, kinda wish we would have to the next stop. But I got to see coming up the pass because there were a lot cars out taking pictures. It only stopped for 1/2 hr. One of the more local places, they were having people park and then take a tram to see it. I don't know how that worked out, although (on tv) everyone got up pretty close.

The first 2 areas we went to weren't bad as far as crowds/parking but the 3rd location was a cluster! Totally worth it though.

I'm so confused. What is big boy and why are we so excited about it? There is no way this is about a frisch's statue, right? I can't imagine, he's not pretty. Off to Google.

My mind went to the same place. Why would anyone "chase" the Azar's Big Boy plastic statue??? I had to read the thread just to understand the allure. Ha Now that I know, I must say that is a really impressive train. I'm envious of anyone who got to photograph that beauty.

I MIGHT be able to see it after all.. Found out at work that it will be passing by and they are trying to figure out what time. Our prison is right by some tracks but I never thought it would be going through this area. If that is the case, I can just look out the window!!! Or walk to the tracks. Whoot whoot.. Hopefully that is some good information!

I love that Big Boy too! I thought it was just me. We don't have big trains here in the Northeast so I definitely learned something today. It sounds like a lot of fun, tracking the train. Does anyone have any pics they can post?
