Our spare refrigerator seems to take longer than normal to defrost a large turkey. Last year I started to defrost on a Thursday, but when I checked on it the night before Thanksgiving, the cavity of the bird was still partially frozen with large chucks of ice that I had to pry out. This year, I decided to start a day earlier and started defrosting last night. Remember to give yourself enough time to defrost your turkey and check on it the night before.

Yep as soon as I saw the subject line I thought of the "classic pea" stories.
1. The overbearing hostess that stated exactly what to bring and what type of spoon 2. The lady that didn't defrost her turkey 3. Already mentioned above - pick up the turkey at honey baked ham or the farm that is CLOSED on Thanksgiving day and you forgot Wednesday.

I'm picking up and immediately defrosting a 20lber tomorrow. Mine is 22lbs and it takes me way more than the allotted 4lbs/day. I wonder if larger turkeys take longer or that my fridge is just way too packed with food?

Thanks! Even according to that chart, my 22 lb turkey needs almost an additional 2 days! Perhaps it's just my refrigerator.

I normally make 24+ lb birds, and I've never defrosted them in the refrigerator. Either I get them fresh from the butcher, or i get them non-frozen and put them in the refrigerator. BUT, if they do come frozen, I have always defrosted them on my kitchen counter on a big dish (and put it in the refrig nightly)...... No problems, thank God........

Picked up my 24.5 lb bird today and it's already in the refrigerator defrosting. Tuesday I'll take it out and do the water bath with water change every 30 min until it's ready. Ten into the brine and we'll start it Wednesday night right before bed.

I've got a 20lb bird thawing in my fridge that I'm cooking Saturday for a dinner at church...stinkin' bag must have tiny holes in it because it's making a mess in the garbage bag I have it sitting in (just in case). I'm starting to think I'll have to deal with it tonight or else I'm going to have a potentially bigger mess by Saturday morning.

It’s a pain to have in the fridge, but it will contain the mess. I’ve also used a 2 gallon zip bag, but I prefer the roasting pan. I use a foil pan for easy clean up and just toss it when I’m done.

Put the whole thing in your roasting pan. It’s a pain to have in the fridge, but it will contain the mess. I’ve also used a 2 gallon zip bag, but I prefer the roasting pan. Good advice! I’m always amazed at how long it takes to defrost a turkey. Yes! We get a 22 pd. turkey (we like leftovers!) and we have to have it sit in the refrigerator for about 6 days! I think our refrigerator is very cold. I have to buy it tomorrow. We just have one refrigerator, so it's a pain because the turkey takes up so much room. So we usually don't buy our refrigerated Thanksgiving meal ingredients/food until Thanksgiving day while the turkey is cooking.

Also, everyone probably already knows this, but put your defrosting turkey in some kind of pan. Two years ago was our first time ever cooking a turkey (we finally get to host a holiday!). I had it sitting in the refrigerator defrosting for a few days. Well, the day before Thanksgiving I was making the 12 hr. round trip to pick up college daughter. My youngest called me and told me I forgot to put it in a pan, and it dripped all over the refrigerator. My husband and daughter were not happy with me! I had a big mess to clean up when I got home. Now I know!

that's DH's job. the rest of us are having prime rib so that's what i need to keep an eye on. if DH's turkey breast doesn't defrost in time, there's plenty of prime rib for him too. LOL

I buy fresh.. the butcher will cut in half length wise and my child will dry brine it.. one half at a time.have to pick up on wed, having dinner on saturday. my fridge is so small it gets tough..

We are having our Thanksgiving dinner today with my in-laws in MN. Yesterday, I noticed she had a HUGE turkey sitting in the sink all day long with water. I looked up thawing instructions and she was not changing the water and the turkey was not fully submerged. I hope no one gets sick! I don’t have the kind of relationship that I can offer my feedback. And she does not like to cook.

our turkey has been in the fridge(at my daughters house) since Friday. It'll get cut up and put in a brine Wednesday.. And yes, they cook it cut up, like how one would butcher a chicken into the 8 pieces. cooks MUCH faster that way, just around an hour last year I think, actually makes tons of sense, her husband cuts it.

I don’t have the kind of relationship that I can offer my feedback. And she does not like to cook. Oh, the joys of our mothers and mothers-in-law's food handling skills. My MIL was generous to a fault and always jumped in to help with the meal on Thanksgiving. She used to cook one turkey for me and bring it over, then she would carve my turkey while I was doing other prep. One year, I looked over and saw her licking her fingers while she was carving. That was the last year I let her help with the turkey. I never told her why I started doing both turkeys the day before. I do think food safety is something her generation never gave any thought to. My mother used to put meat on the counter to thaw in the morning to cook that night. She's a finger licker too. My MIL was born in 1938 and my mom was born in 1940.

Well, it's Wednesday morning and today's the day to roast turkeys I bought last Tuesday. First one seems thawed, we'll see when we open the bag. Second one is now sitting in a cold water bath. It still felt frozen when I checked it.
For the record, you can roast partially frozen turkey, it just takes longer. But, it does need to be thawed enough to remove the neck and the bag of giblets from the cavity. It's really painful to work with partially frozen turkey.
I've been doing this for 30 years and I don't think I've ever had a turkey completely thawed. Next time, I'm just going to buy them two weekends before the holiday and give them 10 to 11 days to thaw.

hennybutton I was just thinking about you. I'm going to remove mine from the packaging tonight. I agree with it being painful to work with when it's partially frozen. My fingers are usually to the point of frostbite trying to get the chunks of ice out of the cavity and it's a PITA trying to remove the neck and giblets. Hopefully adding a day to defrost has helped. Will update tonight.
