This morning I was choosing a spoon to use for my breakfast. I picked up 3 or 4 before I settled on one. Now I do not have all the same utensils, I have a hodge podge as so many have been lost over the years. I still prefer my original spoons or forks that I have no idea what they are from 40 years ago. It's not really about pattern, it's about how they feel.
So if not utensils, cups? Plates? I have a certain kind of water glass I like. I have 2 of them and one disappeared. So I tried to find a substitute. I found 3, and they are not the same. They will work for now, but they don't seem just right.
Bowls are the same way. It seems I prefer hard plastic over ceramic. I know I could just ditch everything I have and start over, but my indecisiveness got me wondering if anyone else does the same thing,

We have one spoon that neither of us like. It used to always be the last spoon left in the drawer. Now I feel bad for the unloved spoon, and I always use it if it is the first one that I grab instead of putting it back and getting one I like better.

I'm opposite in that I hate to eat from plastic. I can't even do the Corelle or melamine stuff. I like a 'real' plate or bowl (well, they are all real, but I was trying to avoid the china/stoneware/porcelain/on-and-on descriptors.)
My husband's favorite cup that he drinks out of every day is a ratty old plastic coca-cola tumbler. It's a clear pebbled sort of plastic with a faded white coca-cola logo on it. I set a lovely table with everything just so... and he insists on that pitiful worn out plastic cup. I don't understand it, but he's entitled to his quirks just like any of us, I suppose. Weirdo.

We were low on spoons so I bought some that Bed Bath and Beyond sells individually. I had 3 of them and would actually hide them in the drawer from DH so I could have my spoon. He didn't care which one he used.
Finally though when we lost enough forks that we were constantly having to go to the dishwasher for silverware, I broke down and bought a new set - 12 place settings! We shouldn't be without silverware again. We really like it, too. It's Oneida Moda.
Oh, but I did keep the BB&Beyond spoons in the back of the drawer for eating soup. They really are the perfect size in between a teaspoon and tablespoon.

I like buying coffee mugs but I continue to drink my morning coffee out of a travel cup most days. I seem to be creating a small collection of mugs. DH even commented on it. "I'm not buying you any mugs because you only use that old travel one." 😆
I will drink my water only out of these plastic tumblers I bought a few years ago. I will not drink water from a glass or stainless steel cup. But I will drink my wine, beer, and coke from a glass, not the plastic cup.
DH prefers the larger spoons, the soup ones? I prefer the smaller ones.

I have a Guinness mug with a toucan on it that I use for coffee. It's the perfect size/weight - everybody knows not to touch it.

I sure do.
We also have a hodge podge. Utensils have to be the right weight. I like certain coffee mugs. Certain bowls for soup.

I like soup spoons. I like the shape, the size and how they feel. So in addition to buying the regular sets of flatware we also purchased a dozen soup spoons. So now, for the two of us, we have something like 44 spoons This is our flatware. We choose it because, in addition to liking the way it looks and even more importantly, it is sleek hefty and a pleasure to use. DH prefers to use the salad forks. My all-time favorite spoon was this sugar spoon. We loved the whole set but had to select a new one because some young family members threw away a lot of the pieces and it would cost more to replace them than start over. Anyway, this spoon felt amazing, even the light bumps in the design. I’m tempted to buy this one We got our glasses from a restaurant supply store. Similar to these, but our base is probably a bit thicker. 20 oz and 10 oz I think. We had commented for ages how much we liked them when we ate out, liked that they were hefty and sleek. Unfortunately, when I bought them I showed them the one I wanted and they grabbed the boxes. We had them open them and confirm it was the same glass, and checked for chips. But I didn’t notice until we had used them for a while that the one we got was just slightly larger than the one I had selected. Just assumed it felt different because I wasn’t used to them. DH has ginormous hands so they’re perfect for him, but they’re just a touch to big to fit perfectly in my hands. Dinnerware is all about the quality and the pretty. Oh, and the size! I don’t like for my food to touch so we use the larger Fiestaware chop plates for dinner plates. And we get the jumbo bowls as well. Everything glass or ceramic except some melamine we just purchased for picnics. All matching everything, just the 2 options for glassware except for some travel and glass water bottles. I think I’m traumatized from the various cheap plastic everything my Dad would come home with. It was such a pain to get everything to fit in the cabinet, was always cracking and is visually jarring. Our uniform cabinets and drawers are soothing to me.

Over the years I have tried different variations on silverware. A couple of years ago I bought some to match my Fiesta dishes.. UGGG the worst. Most of the broke in less than a month or two. I only have the soup size left since we never use those much and a few knives. The silverware I had before that came from my mom's husband. It was all brand new and had EVERYTHING you ever wanted in sizes, types, etc. It was cheap stuff but it wasn't bad. We used that for almost 20 years. Then the Fiesta which went South. Last year since the Fiesta was breaking left and right and we were running low on spoons, I bought some at the grocery store sold by the piece. I bought four spoons. OMG.. I LOVE those spoons... I bought more.. knives and forks. LOVE LOVE LOVE. They look good. Kinda heavy but not too heavy. They wash up so nicely. This past weekend I was going to grab some more so all my silverware was matching.. They changed them!!!! NO MORE... Ugggg. so so sad. Now I am left with three kinds.. and one spare yucky spoon that we used for camping.. that is the last straw spoon.
Cups I use the sweat free cups that are random the Trevis kind.. Coldness is my main goal.. Gotta have my drinks cold. I will use stainless ones too.

Actually, I have to use a salad fork, because I prefer the smaller size. But, not any salad fork - Has to be one of my Rogers ones that are lighter. Same with dinner knives, has to be the lighter ones. eta ~ I, too, used to have a sugar spoon that I loved. Loved. I somehow lost it, and have looked for a similar one online. 😊

Ours all match at this point. Although, my dd (20) prefers to eat with a salad fork. But, she’ll use the larger spoon for soup. I prefer a dinner fork, but the smaller teaspoon for my soup.
We do have one random teaspoon that a guest must have left once. None of us knows where it came from. It’s my favorite for soup. I would buy more but I don’t know what the brand is.

I always use a salad fork for eating my meal, too. Regular dinner forks are just too big and don't feel comfortable to me. maybe it's the fact that the handle on a dinner fork is longer? I dunno, exactly.
we have mainly one set of silverware, but have a few 'old' spoons, a different fork, and one oddball knife. I always use the 'old' fork for serving up the cat food. It's not like washing them won't get the cat food off of it, so I don't know why I do it like that- but I do. I would never use one of our regular 'eating' utensils for serving up the cat food, lol.

I prefer my Tervis cups. We have a couple of different sets of silverware and my dh and dd2 have their favorites that they MUST use. Dd2 loved her forks so much that when she married and moved out, I packed them up for her in her grocery haul from our house. She was so surprised and happy when she saw them!

I have a favorite spoon - dh calls it the princess spoon as it has flowers and scrolls on the handle. I have favorite mugs that no but me uses.
There are forks that I won't use as the feel strange in my hands.

For cups we only use Yeti and RTIC. Everyone has their favorite one of those.
Our dishes (plates, bowls, etc.) are all the same (Pioneer Woman - I like the colors, patterns, and weight of the pieces). Our silverware all matches.

I have a set of English Hammered utensils I bought on a Giant special deal circa 2093-2004. I LOVE them. They don’t show fingerprints and the are the right “weight” for me. I bought 12 place settings of everything—butter knives, salad and dinner forks, teaspoons, soup spoons, ice tea spoons, steak knives. I bought at least 2 extra 12 packs of the teaspoons and dinner forks, so 36 total of each of those. I still had most of these when we moved to WV in 2012. I now have a total of 3 ice tea spoons, 6 teaspoons, 5 soup spoons, 5 dinner forks, 9 salad forks, and 8 butter knives. The steak knives are the only part of the set that is still complete.
I have my suspicions regarding which child has hauled off my silverware to parts unknown but no way to prove it. In the meantime, we have also gone through many of the 36 (each) cheap food service forks and spoons from Sam’s that I purchased so we would have something to eat with. I refuse to invest in better tableware until she is out of the house!
It is so aggravating!
ETA. I found a similar set at Costco a few years back for a ridiculously good price (something like $30 for 12 place settings!). I bought them and have them stashed away for when the offending child moves out. So technically, I have “invested” in better utensils but I’m just not letting my family know.

We still have the same stainless eating utensils that we received as wedding gifts when we married 31 years' ago. I still love set of eating utensils. They are nice and substantial w/out being too heavy.
Our everyday dishes are porcelain. They are just the right weight and size-heavy enough that they don't break or chip easily, but they still fit nicely in the dishwasher.
My favorite drinking glass is a tervis tumbler.
When I set the table for dinner, I like all the glasses to match, so we use restaurant style glasses from Pottery Barn. Glasses just seem to disappear from our house, so I have to replace them every three years' or so.

Yes! I remember picking out our original flatware when DH and I had our first apartment. I didn’t love any of the choices we had at the time so I just picked the ones I hated least, LOL. Yeah, 30+ years later and we still have that same set of silverware, ugh.
BUT! About a dozen years ago my friend bought a bunch of rando secondhand silverware to use for scrapbooking events, and when we stopped doing the events we had to decide what to do with all of our combined stuff. She didn’t want the silverware and said I could have it for our cabin, so I took it home. Some of the smaller spoons and some of the heavier weight forks migrated their way into my kitchen drawer, and those spoons are the ones I prefer. When I’m emptying out the dishwasher, I typically put all of the “good” spoons down at the bottom of the silverware tray so my family won’t use them, LOL. I also like the heavier forks for dinner when we’re eating something that can be “cut” with the side of a fork.
And my answer is yes for the dishes and cups too. We had three remaining salad sized plates from an old set of Corelle that we used all.the.time. Bigger than a dessert plate, smaller than a dinner plate, the perfect size. I finally broke down and bought six more in plain white right before Target stopped carrying them. I prefer my 24 oz Tervis tumbler above all other cups in my house, and DH has three heavy stoneware coffee mugs that he always uses. We kept a few other slightly smaller ceramic mugs for cocoa, but otherwise we got rid of all the rest that no one ever uses.

We got a set of Oneida flatware when we got married. We did well with them for many years and then we started losing pieces here and there. When I was down to only 3 or 4 of one of the spoon sizes I went looking online for more. What I found was that it was cheaper and smarter to buy another full set of the same style, which was still available, than to buy replacements individually. Now I have plenty of forks and spoons and knives, and they all still match.
We started using Tervis tumblers years ago, because they don’t sweat and they are large and keep drinks colder. I recently removed half of the other glasses from the kitchen cabinet, as I rarely used them and they were taking up space I could use for other things,
I have the Corelle we got when we got married, and it has three sizes of plates and two different bowls. I use whichever size plate works with what I’m eating. They all match so no "favorite." My mom had Corelle in all different kinds of blue patterns, and she liked the variety and using different plates each meal. She got the fun without having truly mismatched stuff.

we have a set of Corelle dishes... I also like using the smaller salad plate for my meals. It looks like I'm eating more, since the plate is smaller!! But there's only two salad plates, and 6 dinner plates, lol.

Oh my. Yes. My kids think I am crazy. Since they've all been in and out over the pandemic, I keep saying to them, "Be careful with that [glass, mug, plate] I love it so much. They are like "Mom! You love them all!" And I do! I have a very eclectic kitchen. Lots of things from all over the place that I like. Some like my Kiss the Frog Cats of Paris collection are super dear to me. Others, like my 5 Lamps glass reminds me of a great time in Ireland. Every single thing I own to eat off of or drink out of, brings me a memory.

We have several Starbucks "city" mugs as well as a couple from special places in Hawaii. I'll sometimes choose my cup based on how I feel that day- Hawaii because I'm dreaming of a beach vacation or one that reminds of special times.

Dh has a favorite coffee cup that I would like to hide because it has to be handwashed. It annoys me that I have to hand wash it and can't put it in the dishwasher with the rest of the cups.
I used to have a favorite spoon - it was a odd ball one. The bottom handle was brown plastic so it was easy to pick out (it was the only one left of the set) Last month I finally bit the bullet and purchased a brand spanking new 16 place flatware set from Onieda. DH made me get rid of all the mismatched flatware and now everything in that drawer matches ( first time in 30 years!)

I once upon a time had a nice set of every day dishes. And a second set set. And a third. Now, I had an assortment of all kinds of plates bowls, sauces, forks, knives, spoons, etc. I’ve thrifted all of them. They all have a similar weight and feel, but are different patterns and brands. It makes for an table setting, but it really works and other than my MIL, every one loves it! And I don’t get upset if a dish is broken a a spoon or fork is lost to the trash or disposal.

We recently pared down all of our dishes, mugs and cups so everything we have is just the stuff we like. I had so many glasses from weddings we have been to, that was the big wedding favor trend during our season of weddings, I got rid of all of them! I prefer all white, no prints or patterns on my dishes and ceramic. Our mugs are the only thing with any kind of writing or patterns. And our drinking glasses are just standard pint glasses from IKEA.
Our silverware is all matching except for one random fork that’s way too tiny but I can’t bring myself to throw it out, it makes me laugh every time I grab it.
