Well, dang, I guess I have to tell DD and YDS we can't text any longer. We can't let any of those side eye texts be let loose upon the world!

I have no clue what phones other people have... If you have an iPhone, then you can tell what kind of phone the receiver of your text has, because of the colour of the text. iPhone to iPhone = blue iPhone to Android = green

The implication is that you might have personal info in those texts that hackers can then use to steal your passwords, etc. The people who they verified were hacked were politicians. There are other apps that are secure like Signal. At the very least, it should be a warning to people to use 2 factor authentication in the event your stuff is stolen or hacked. I certainly don’t put password info in my texts but I’m sure some people do..

I'll need to rethink that. Thanks!

Also successful hacks tend to be obtained or duplicated by others. The initial targets are political or high influence people, not any of us. But in the hands of a Russian scammer group who just wants your money, is their anything in your texts that can be farmed so they can target habits you or your contacts might be more vulnerable to, be used to prove identity, and things of that nature. Think of the scams that target old people with someone pretending to be a friend or family member in need.

Or if you use your kid’s names and birthdays for your banking and casually mention those via texts, it adds up. Like the people who used to raid garbage bags and end up with your identity. Just takes scraps. Not trying to be an alarmist but who the fuck knows with the way things are headed?
