I have an old Dyson that I use upstairs. Last Christmas, we got a Shark Navigator Lift-Away for downstairs. (I like the Shark so much better than the Dyson.) I vacuumed upstairs yesterday and downstairs today. Both vacuums had empty cups. After vacuuming, they were both about half-full. There are only three of us in the house, no pets, and we vacuum every week. We use a stick vac a 2-3 times a week in the master bath to pick up my hairs after I shampoo, so there's no hair to speak of filling the cup. So, where is all this stuff coming from? There is quite a bit of dust, but it looks like there's a ton of lint too. The dust I understand, but is the lint a result of the vacuum removing carpet fibers? My family room and upstairs carpets are about 7 years old and the living/dining room carpet is a year old. I've noticed some loose yarns on the older carpet lately. I don't know if that's ongoing because DH used to do the vacuuming. Am I doing more harm than good to my carpet by vacuuming every week or by using such powerful vacuum cleaners?

The amount of lint floating around in the air is amazing sometimes. Check to be sure that your dryer vent is sealed and perhaps the AC/furnace vents need to be cleaned out. Also change your furnace filter.

Also change your furnace filter. Dryer vent is sealed, we don't have A/C and hardly ever run the furnace. I also dust every week and my furniture hardly build up any dust. I could probably dust every two weeks and still not have much dust on the furniture.

We have almost entirely hard surface floors, on which I use a Swiffer once a week. Just the living room and upstairs hall alone "fills" up a Swiffer pad. We are empty nesters, no pets, and we take off our shoes when we enter the house. (The foyer's dirt and dust accumulation is remarkable and makes me even more glad we take off our shoes there and don't go into the house proper!) So there's a lot of stuff that ends up on floors -- dust, lint, hair. Actually, there is a LOT of hair and my dh is nearly bald and I sweep the bathroom daily after I do my hair, so you wouldn't think there would be that much hair around, but there is! My husband often muses about why I'm not bald, given how much hair I seem to lose!
