I used to have a Martha Stewart magazine from several years ago. It was lost in the fire....sigh... It had an article in it showing step by step how to make decorated gingerbread cookies that looked like big ornaments. It had a very detailed explanation for how to pipe the outline, then flood the center, then decorate. I have been looking all morning for that article online but cannot find it.
Anyone happen to have that magazine who could snap some pics of the article?
Or find it online for me? Or have another source for something similar? Nothing I am finding online seems to be close to what I remember.
I have three girls who want to do decorated cookies this weekend and that was always my go-to recipe.

 I found the image but not the recipes. I found a cookie recipe to use, but I am now looking more for the flooding icing and the piping icing recipes. I think there were two different recipes for the icing and I think they used meringue powder.

Try this website for royal icing tips and recipes. Sounds like you want to make two types of royal icing, one thinner for flooding and another for piping. Hanielas.com. She has some great tips. Hth

My mom and I used to decorate cakes and cookies. We did as samantha25 suggested and had two different consistencies of Royal icing. Oh and those cookies are beautiful! I hope you will post some pictures of the cookies your kids make.

Thanks for the links. The dough is chilling so I have time to check them out. I mostly remember that it was a very time consuming process...lol...with all the different types of royal icing we had to make, and the waiting between all the different stages. I tried to explain to the girls that this was going to be an all day thing!

I have Martha's Holiday Baking magazine of her 100 favorite recipes and it wasn't in there. It was from 2002.

Here's my random tips: I make my cookies. I make royal icing (with meringue powder). I make it thick enough for piping. I take a good amount and put it in a bowl. I dye it the color I want to work with first (or keep it white.) I split it in half and put one half in a piping bag with tip (I use large disposable freezer bags that zip shut) and then "thin" the other half with drops of water until it is thin enough to flood the piped cookie (a little water goes a long way - as does dye); I pipe the cookie, wait for it to dry and then flood. For flooding I use hair dye bottles you can buy at beauty supply stores - they are reusable and clean out really well. It's a lot of trial and error but you get the hang of all of it eventually.

I take my hat off to anyone who even attempts to make those cookies with all that elaborate decorating. I don’t think I would be able to bite into them, just too pretty to eat!
