In light of my cholesterol post I've decided to eat more salads for lunch. So I bought some earthbound farms salad greens. I really like them better than lettuce (I know they have lettuce but they have other greens too). Last time I got half & half (half baby spinach, half spring mix) and this time the half & half was expired so I got all spring mix. Anyway it says it's triple washed. Do you wash it anyway? Also I found this dressing that is really good: www.alpineavocado.com I got a sample of it but I have to order it online so I'm waiting for a sale. So until then I'm using Annie's organic ranch. Anyone have any favorite dressings or dressing recipes? If anyone wonders why I'm buying the precut stuff, our grocery stores have very little variety of salad greens and I feel like I'm more likely to eat it this way. I'm not a salad eater so I have to make it easy on myself.

No, I don't rewash them unless I see something specifically on them.
I've had better luck with the greens packed in a plastic box than those in bags. They've lasted a LOT longer for me.

If I use the bags I do not wash them again.
What I typically do though is buy smaller heads of the baby lettuces/greens, remove the cores, break the leaves into smaller pieces then wash and run them through a salad spinner then store them in a glass covered bowl that I line with paper towels on the top and bottom. It really keeps the lettuce leaves fresh for 4 or 5 days. I find it's much cheaper and makes it easy to fix a quick salad for lunch or dinner.

I have never re-washed bagged or boxed salad and I've never had a problem. I too find that we eat more salads by buying bagged or boxed spinach or the spring mix. I then add dried cherries or fresh strawberries, nuts and a little blue cheese with balsamic salad dressing. Or, I add carrots, celery, broccoli and other veggies. Now I'm craving a salad and it's only 9:15 AM.

Not usually. I am not a salad eater and often when I buy lettuce or spinach, we don't finish it. I wish I liked it since it is a healthy alternative. Great job OP, on healthy eating changes.

I don't wash mine either. Like a pp, I was finding that if I had to break open, tear, wash & spin my lettuce, I simply wasn't eating salad. I find myself eating a lot more salad now that it's ready to go. I also applaud you for your healthy eating habits. I really need to get better about that. I will confess, my favorite dressings would be of no help to you - they're loaded w/baaaad things. My mother used to toss our salads w/just enough olive oil & balsamic to coat and then sprinkle on a teeny bit of Good Seasons powdered mix so it had some flavor. I'm guessing that's at least a little healthier than the blue cheese I prefer, lol.

Yes. I found dirt once, a lot of dirt, on some leaves out of a triple-washed box. Since then I've always washed them again in my salad spinner. I like the boxed stuff though because I find it lasts longer as well.

I use the earthbound farms box of baby romaine and usually do wash and spin it but mainly because I mix in other lettuce that may be from a head of romaine or green leaf.

No I don't. I love eating the spring mix with any dressing as long as it's a vinargerette type. I usually make my own and use different vinegars. Happy eating!

Always wash (use salad spinner) of any greens. Any little thing can get into a bag or box during transport.

Yes, always. I don't trust that it's clean, plus I'm very squeamish and I want to pick out any yucky wilted pieces that would - if discovered later - cause me to throw away the whole salad once I put the effort into making it.

Nope. Don't have time for that. I buy the triple washed boxes to save time not to create work.

I do not wash bagged lettuc / salad - I don't normally use it, but when I do it's because I'm in a time crunch.

I don't wash it either, the whole reason I buy it that way is for convenience.

Nope. I buy either the boxes of half n half or spring greens and have never washed them. That's why I'm willing to spend a little extra buying them like that so I don't have to. There are two chores in the kitchen I loathe, unloading the dishwasher and actually making a salad from scratch. I eat a ton of salad, but probably wouldn't eat a single leaf if I had to do all the work.

Neither of us washes pre packaged greens. If I find something I don't think should be there I just pick that part out.

I always rinse and run them through my salad spinner. I have found dirt and dead bugs in mine before.

If I buy the bagged salad I find it has a funny smell so I rinse it until that smell disappears. Then I'm good to go.

Yes, I wash them, unless I really don't have the time. I know they are probably fine, but I do it, anyway.
DD, who worked for a deli, said they never washed the triple washed greens. She never washes hers.

I don't wash the pre bagged salad that comes with croutons or nuts but I do wash the triple washed spinach from Costco, unless I'm cooking it, I guess it depends on what it is :-)

This would be me too. I can taste it if a salad hasn't been freshly washed. And I like to let mine sit in cold water with a little vinegar added to help kill of any grossness. I won't complain about it if I'm at someone's place and they haven't washed it, but at home I like to wash. Some stuff I'll soak in vinegar water and than throw in one of those Tupperware fridge smarts because they claim it lasts longer in there.

We used too, but over the summer my husband read in his "Nutrition Action" newsletter that it wasn't necessary. It said that you risk getting bacteria from the sink splashed back into the salad. So that was a good enough reason for us not to wash it again. It's so much better than eating "wet" salad! We used a salad spinner, but it still left wet lettuce.
