We're at the very beginning stages of planning a weeks vacation to Maine this summer. We're still not quite sure it will even work, but we'd like to plan for it anyway, even if we have to table it until summer 2021.
We'd be traveling with our kids - 21 year old, 19 year old, 16 year old.
I think everyone is interested in being someplace that feels a little remote, view of water, - just super peaceful. But also not too far away from the things we'd want to do - light house tours, whale watching, hiking, dinners out occasionally.
Just wondered if anyone had suggestions on where might be a good home base for a weeks stay.
Thanks !

My favorite Maine vacation spots are Mt. Desert Island and Camden areas.

I think Merge has a vacation property in Maine, but I might be mistaken

I think Merge has a vacation property in Maine, but I might be mistaken I believe she has a rental property in Rockland/Rockport - they are the towns just before Camden and are also great little places to explore!

We enjoyed a short stay at Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth near Portland. It is a luxury resort so rooms are expensive, but ours was large and with your 3 kids along their suites might not be too much more than 2 rooms elsewhere.

I wanted to go to Acadia national park and started planning a trip. About halfway,I realized it was going to be more than I was comfortable spending, mostly because of lodging. We did a new England cruise instead that started in NYC to Boston to Newport to Acadia national park to st John and another Canadian port. Only one day In Maine but we did a lot of things we didn't know we wanted to do and we're happy with that trip.

I rent in Castine and love that area. It’s about an hour from Bar Harbor if you want more to do, but I love the quiet of the Castine/Blue Hill/Brooksville area.
I would make sure to stick to north of Portland; south of it in the summer is really, really crowded.

Thanks for all the ideas - feels good to have a jumping off point as I do some research!

Sorry, I didn't see this before - yes, we have a home in Rockland and consider it ideal for midcoast exploration. Not quite as commercialized as Camden has become, definitely not as crowded as Bar Harbor, but lots of amenities, great restaurants, close to everything. i think our place would be a little cramped for five adults, but if you like, I'll send you a link to my friend's vacation rental, which is gorgeous and a bit larger than ours.
If/when you decide to stay in the area, I can give specific recommendations for things to do and places to eat.

I feel like we're in limbo waiting for word on summer internships & finding out how flexible those are - but I will totally get in touch when we're a definite go!

We stay every summer in Lincoln. It's right outside Camden and it's a great area. Close to Rockland and Rockport.

It’s probably too far south for what you need but our family vacationed annually at Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport.
