We are paring down this year and going with the "something you want / something you need / something to wear / something to read" philosophy. The only modification is that I'm swapping out "something to wear" with "something creative" because DS has all the clothes he could want or need. He'll be in five in December and with his birthday being a week before Christmas, and him being spoiled rotten by our extended families, I don't feel the need to go overboard (for once, lol).
Here is DS's list:
- Want - TBD; he hasn't made a list yet. He's insisted that "Santa is everywhere, he knows what's in my brain mom!". Ha!
- Need - new "big boy" scooter with helmet/knee pads/etc. His old one is wobbly and frankly dangerous for him to ride
- Creative - art kit with water crayons, colored pencils, and art paper
- Read - beginning chapter books that we can read to him - probably Magic Tree House series, and one or two others
He'll also get little stuff through his advent (1 or two christmas books, christmas pajamas, maybe a car or two) but I'm trying to make the advent more activity/experienced based this year. This could very well be our last year in the DC area, and we are trying to experience all of the quintessential DC holiday activities that we've always thought we had plenty of time to do - seeing the national tree, holidays on the Ellipse, the big santa to-do at Tysons Corner, Zoo lights, etc.

My family always asks for a list, and this is what I've put on his wish list for birthday/christmas for the family:
- board games and puzzles
- fort building set - he's really into making forts, and since I'd like to chuck the bazillion throw pillows in this house, he needs a replacement

- DVDs of his favorite movies
- gift cards to go bowling or to the movies
- indoor trampoline
