I'm adding yoga to my exercise mix and with the plan to attend a class once a week and do my own thing at home several times a week.
The studio I'm using has a really great deal for a month of unlimited classes right now that makes sense to buy even if I just go once a week so I did get it. Most friends I know IRL just go to a weekly class. What do you do/prefer? Do you do a mix of at home/in class yoga? In class only? At home only?

I looked into a separate membership at a yoga studio and found it to be expensive. I belong to a gym that offers many different classes and that is where I do yoga. For a while I followed Yoga with Adrianne on YouTube. Her videos are good.

I used to do 2-3 classes a week. I may be getting back into it in a couple weeks, and will most likely do just 1 class a week.
I’d love to do it at home, but we don’t have a ton of space for it at the moment. Hopefully, once I get my extra room cleaned out, I’ll have enough room.

The yoga studio I go to offers unlimited monthly deals, as well as 10 sessions of yoga and pilates at a discount. Depending what my schedule is like and what teachers are on the roster, I get the unlimited and go almost every day, or get the 10 pack and go at least once a week. I find that yoga once a week is barely enough to keep me flexible, and I reap maximum benefits with 5 sessions a week, of a variety of types of practice.

I'm doing the 30 day challenge with Adrienne (Youtube) so right now I'm yoga-ing every day. Normally I take 1 - 3 classes a week, depending on time.

I did a month unlimited at a good local studio to get coaching and feedback on form and then do it on my own at home on an on-going basis. I like yoga but not enough to include it in my fitness budget every month.

I do one class a week (90 mins) at a very nice yoga studio with props, blankets, music, essential oils and peaceful atmosphere and it's the best evening of my week. I do another session after school one day with some other teachers. We use an empty classroom, so the ambience is not great, but we have fun.
I'd be at the yoga studio 4-5 times a week if I could afford it.
You'll love it. It's by far the best thing I do for myself.

I did the January challenge last year and it was great. I’ll have to start tomorrow. To answer the OP - if you’ve never or rarely done any yoga, I think it’s good to take some beginner studio classes where they’ll give you feedback on your form. Then, once you have a good idea of what things should feel like, I prefer to do yoga at home. I love the Yoga with Adrienne videos and they’re free, and she is very easy to follow. If you want to do more than basic poses and stretching - for example, if you want to try inversions - go back to the studio for more instruction so you don’t hurt yourself.

I’ve been making it to a Sunday afternoon class at the Y most weeks. I would go more often, but have a hard time finding any other times that work for my schedule.
I have a hard time motivating myself to get out the mat at home ... but tel me more about the Adrienne challenge. I’ve seen her videos, not familiar with the challenge tho

Is there any reason why you're looking into yoga rather than pilates? I must admit, I don't know a lot about either. But pilates seems to be all the rage here. DD bought an introductory package and has been going regularly. I would love to, but it's not in my budget at the moment. I'm trying to talk DD into doing a pilates trainer course as an add on to her physiotherapy degree, so I can be her guinea pig! But the course is really expensive.

I chose “other” because my thing isn’t listed. I started in studio yoga classes at a new studio just 3 minutes from my house in March. I’d never done yoga before. I have lost 40 pounds since then and feel so strong and healthy. I’m a yoga convert. I do 3-4 studio classes a week and a month ago I got the peloton app and take yoga classes a couple times a week at home as well (as well as do some other types of classes on the app). I like both studio and home - there’s good things about both. I have an unlimited monthly membership for the studio so it is a good deal for me.

I'm mostly interested in increased flexibility right now, so think yoga is the better choice for that. My understanding is pilates is the better choice if core strengthening is your priority.

I think it depends on your motivation for doing the yoga in the first place. I like a Thursday night yin restorative class my studio offers. I wait until my studio runs a special. Usually a ten classes for $120 punch card. I buy that.
But my motivation for doing yoga is to relax. I am always trying to quiet my mind, stretch my body, and calm it right down. So I do yoga as needed. Probably 3-4 times a week.
My yoga practice includes lighting incense and wearing a Bluetooth eyemask with reiki music. I do it "blind". This has been my practice for years.
I think it is wonderful to start with a class with professional instruction. Add some moves to your stash. And know how things are supposed to feel. Be careful too with the type of class you choose. Because they aren't all the same. Know your intention in taking the class. Or experiment with several different classes if you don't know what you're going for and see which kinds of moves appeal to you.
Good luck. I think yoga is wonderful.

I am doing a Thursday night Yin yoga class and I love it. I've never done yoga before so the studio owner suggested I start with Yin because it's a small class, the poses are not difficult and the teacher is amazing. I'll be starting a six-week beginner course in mid-January and it comes with an unlimited class pass. I'm definitely going to go more than once a week during that time.
There are classes at our city recreation center (and they are very affordable) however I couldn't find a beginner class so I went with a private studio. The class at the studio is limited to a small number of students and I have been told that the teacher will come around to each student to make sure the pose is correct.
I never thought I would like yoga as much as I do!

My gym offers yoga but the classes are very limited and don’t fit my schedule. My gym does crossfit and yoga at my job twice a week May thru October. So I do yoga those days after CrossFit. Sometimes I’ll do yoga only if I’m doing a bike ride that evening (no crossfit class).
I do yoga for stretching.

I've been doing Yoga with Adrienne for 4 years. Starting Day 3 of her 30 Day challenge today.
I haven't been to many classes since I started YWA. I really like hitting the mat on my own time, wearing whatever I have available LOL.

I go to a studio once a week. I try to remember to do a few poses everyday, but it's only like 5 or 10 minutes of yoga.
I used to do a semi private lesson (there were two of us in the class) two times a week at the yoga instructor's private studio. The instructor was an RN and safety was a huge priority with her. I felt like I learned so much about how to avoid injuries from her. Unfortunately, she quit teaching so I signed up for a once a week class at the studio I now attend.

I do a meditation group on sunday mornings and then usually stay for yoga after. Monday I'm starting a 40 day to transformation class that will be yoga followed by meditation and Thursdays I do hot yoga.

I do Yoga with Adrienne too, and I haven’t liked another yoga program since I started hers. The instructors at my gym seem horrible at talking the class through breathing and poses. I love Adrienne’s reminders about breath and alignment. I was just at a gym class this morning and the instructor told us to “go ahead and wiggle into pigeon if we wanted” while just standing in the front of the class (she did very few actual poses with us, but didn’t walk around helping with poses either). I know pigeon and how to safely get into it, but I saw a few new people looking around like wtf?
I also like to do yoga every day but don’t really have the patience* for an hour long class. The longest YWA video I’ve done is around 45 minutes, some around 20 which I love.
*I realize how anti yoga that sounds!
